Hi Ric, My lath height to centre of chuck is 4’ 31/2”, and to centre of hand wheel 3’ 7”. I find this convenient, but I am 41/2" taller than you. Hope this helps. Peter. |
Thread: Collet Blocks - your advice please.. |

Thread: Workholding questions! |
21/02/2013 08:29:16 |
Hi Chris, I have similar to Gordon W with my chuck mounting. You should definitely make and use a fly cutter, if you are concerned that it may come loose from the chuck drill and tap through the centre and hold it in place with a draw bar through the lath spindle. All the best with your endeavours. Peter.

Thread: Medium carbon steels |
04/01/2013 16:56:07 |
Hi Siddley, What about going to your local building supplier and buying some high tensile reinforcing steel, quite cheep and the rough shape shouldn't matter as your going to forge it. Several grades should be available. Good luck. Peter.

Hi Garry, Have you taken the cap head screws out and looked in the scrw holes? Someone may have put the cap heads in to lock grub screws in position. Just a thought. Peter. |
Thread: Can't drill through lathe stand base plate |
16/12/2012 17:50:19 |
Hi John, I have found when drilling tough steels the helix angle of the drill bit is too acute and grinding this back at the cutting edge facilitates drilling (similar to backing off to drill brass, but not to 0 rake). Hope this helps. Good luck. Peter.

Thread: Slitting Saw Holder |
09/12/2012 17:53:20 |
Hi Johan, If you are keen make both holders, just be sure to include a draw bar thread in the back of the MT shank. A holder made in the lath all at one setting will be concentric therefore the blade should run on centre, however many (most ?) blades are made slightly off centre. Good luck. Peter.

Thread: Joining two pieces of 10mm stainless steel bar at right angles. |
04/12/2012 18:10:59 |
Hi Bear, I would bend them in the bench vice, making a tight bend with the hammer, remove any brusing with abrasive paper, and polish. Or you could cut, weld, grind, and polish. Good luck. Peter. |
Thread: Boxwood routing? |
04/12/2012 17:45:49 |
Hi Rod, I have not routed either of these timbers however have machined others (hard and soft). Two flute tungesten carbide are best, must be sharp, and run at about 22,000 rpm. Good luck. Peter. |

Thread: Stringer EW lathe |

Hi Alan, I copy from "MS word" just Ctrl A, Ctrl C in word then activate the posting box and Ctrl V. Some times a popup asks if I want the word document cleaned up, I click ok. No problems so far. Hope this helps. Peter. |
Thread: why do I keep snapping drills |
20/08/2012 20:43:05 |
Hi Dismaldunc, Drills of that size are best run fast, 3000 rpm would not be out of the way. Aluminium is a chewy, sticky metal a drill can jamb easily, use kerosine to lubricate when machining this. Hope this helps. Peter. |
Thread: Staying loged in between visits |

Hi John,
I find staying logged on a bit hit and miss, and that's not confined to this forum.

Thread: re- using carbide tips |
18/06/2012 19:15:22 |
Hi Ian, I make tooling brazing carbide tips to pieces of steel. The thing you must do is grind off the TiN coating first ( the flux and braze will not wet this). Good luck. Peter. |
