Thread: Electronic Lead Screw Project
26/11/2020 21:07:28

A quick update.
Checked all the pulleys tight on the shafts and belt tension sufficient.
Set up DTI to check saddle movement with one turn of spindle when set to 8tpi and got 0.125.
Reversed spindle to pass start position, then forward to take out any backlash until chuck marks lined up and got 0.125 again. Also checked leadscrew speed against tacho on control box and they tallied.
Tried screw cutting again with similar results as before.

Finally got a very good thread 3/8" x 16tpi ( thread picked because had a nut and die ), by leaving the half nuts engaged but using the VFD reverse function rather than reverse on the control box.

Thanks again for the tip Alan

So will leave for now, more experimentation if time allows.
Thanks for all the replies.

Just checked my floor standing model, pullies 9mm at top and belt fills groove, belt is a Picador Z995.

Belt has been in service for at least 20 years and no problems.

The half nuts were left engaged and the lathe reversed after backing off the cut.

Problem with ELS

Having set up my hardware on the lathe using a stepper/servo motor and driver CL57Y , the motor encoder resolution being 1000 and the motor to leadscrew drive being 1:2 ratio. Decided to test the set up whilst all the electrical side was still on the bench, with a light cut on scrap went through most of the thread TPIs and feed rates and all seemed well.
Finally finished fitting all cabling and installing in cabinet, upgraded to software version 1.301.

However on attempting to cut a 20 tpi thread it turned out very rough and difficult to see exactly why, so cleaned up end of bar, blackened with permanent marker, changed to 8tpi, put on 0.003" cut and got a perfect first pass, but on second pass with same 0.003" cut was approx 1/16" away and on subsequent cuts filled the bar end. Even tried changing software back to version 1.1 made no difference. See photos
Could this be an encoder or a software problem?
Any help much appreciated.

Threads 1.2mm (0.047" ) o/d are 13 BA size.
Nice, small and fiddly.

As a volunteer at the Bolton Steam Museum I can thoroughly recommend this site https://nmes.org/ , with its large collection of mill engines and ancillaries.

I made top hat buttons with slightly domed heads from a small piece of hard plastic found in my scrap box, they were all made circular. Where Clough42 has triangular buttons mine are a larger diameter, a bit fiddly to do, just make one and try for size then adjust as necessary.

Mine was due anywhere between Jan 2 and Feb 12, but arrived early on Dec 18, very fast service.

Garry

There was a series by Stan Bray in Model Engineer under the heading of Bray's Bench starting in Vol 176 No 4009 in 1996 about building "Tina" from the castings from GLR Kennions together with a follow on of building the boiler.

Harold Hall also did part of the engine in one of his series in MEW, I think on using a milling attachment he had made.
You may find some useful information in the articles.

Came across this example of an all in one package for a Nema 34 with driver and power supply, do you think this is a good deal and would be OK for an ML7?

They are valve seat cutters, the tapered threaded part screws into different size valve holes inorder to make it more adaptable.

Usually there is a hole in the side of the piston above the little end, so that oil can drip through from the cylinder.
