Thread: Thornbury Exhibition NEXT WEEK |
19/08/2012 19:09:06 |
This was my second visit to what must be the friendliest exhibition around, I shall certainly be going next year as well despite the four hour round trip. Without wishing to sound sychophantic nor deferential it was a great pleasure and an honour to meet Gray Meek, we even discovered that our wives share a common interest, I slipped up though, I should have taken my copy of his book for inscribing. I was looking forward very much to see progress on Brian Perkins' Mercedes W165 but unfortunately he has had a problem with his arm for far too long. Congratulations and thanks to The Bristol club. Thread: Looking for an old model railway article. "Stuck on Stucco" |
20/06/2012 22:27:03 |
I can't help with the Stuck on Stucco article but Dave Rowe is/was an exponent of this technique using the Das modelling compound. Look out for his book Architectural Modelling in 4mm Scale ISBN 0 906867 12 6, Wild Swan Publications, my copy is of 1983 vintage. See also his book Industrial and Mechanised Modelling ISBN 0 906867 84 3, Wild Swan Publications 1990. I believe I'm correct in saying that he and his wife Shirley produced a superlative scale model of a corn mill that was about to be demolished in Devon (?) and was written up in the American Narrow Gauge and Short Line GAZETTE magazine. Finally I remember seeing a wharf scene with a moving bridge, trackage and goodness knows what else at a railway modelling exhibition. Are they still modelling?

I live in the UK but have a subscription to the American Popular Mechanics where in the April issue the Makerbot Replicator is mentioned very briefly. http://store.makerbot.com/projects.html If you know you are going to win the lottery next weekend it would be an interesting machine to buy but they need to make their web site rather more user friendly! A totally different animal to the item shown on your ebay link but I just wanted to say that I have recently completed the installation of a DRO from the company who advertises on the right here with 100% success. It has transformed my 50 year old Centec 2B milling machine. Don't forget also MEW 180 where Dr.Dick Stephen writes on the installation of magnetic strip read outs and MEW 181 where David Haythornthwaite writes on the BW Electronics system. |
Thread: Transporting a Beaver Model A mill |
01/02/2012 13:15:41 |
Posted by John Olsen on 01/02/2012 06:23:09: Another idea is to construct a very solid base from heavy timbers and bolt the machine to it, so that you have a stable base that is smooth enough underneath to move the whole thing on rollers. Hello Mac, My solution was not unlike John Olsen's suggestion above. My machine was a Centec 2B, for all I know it might be a lot smaller than your Beaver Model A but the 'A' doesn't look that much bigger on Tony Griffiths' site. The vendor agreed to have it put on a substantial pallet which he additionally surfaced with 18mm thick ply but more importantly also agreed to secure the 2B to the pallet using steel banding and bolts through the mounting points of the machine's cabinet. A pallet-line service brought it to my garage, (not to the pavement outside!), for the grand sum of £50 (can't remember whether that was inclusive of VAT). The journey was from Burton-upon-Trent to Hampshire. For a few silly moments I contemplated making two trips to collect, getting there very early on the first day to dismantle. The fuel would have cost me more than the pallet-line type service. I suppose it would be wise though to check on the typical lifting capacity of a tail-lift. |

Thread: Books for model engineers |

It is a 2012 publication. It may not be on their web site yet. Neither is it available from Amazon - yet. I bought my copy at the Alexandra Palace show where, at the same time, I was given a copy of their paper catalogue and there it is at the head of the central column of page 2. If you are not in the UK, I suggest you e-mail them. The price in the UK is £13.95 + £2.10 p&p. I repeat, I've never met Mr Meek, have no connection with him nor his publishers financial or otherwise. |

Finding a topic to place this post under is difficult, my apologies if it offends anyone by my placing it here. Are there any members here who entered Shoreditch Training College in 1962? After three years entrants would have gone on initially to teach Woodwork and Metalwork, subjects which evolved into Craft, Design & Technology and latterly Design and Technology. Contact the following if you are interested or you know of someone who might be interested. rrappel(at)toucansurf.com Thank you |
