David - in case it is of further assistance I now have John Haining's obituary to hand. To summarise: he was a few days short of his 90th birthday when he passed away. Other constructional articles were: the Kitson & Hewitson ploughing engine of 1862, Caradoc - the steam tractor, the Durham and North Yorkshire t.e. and the Suffolk dredging tractor (I'm not clear whether they were all full constructional serials - my collection of MEs only goes back to the year 2000.
He and his wife Ann had been responsible for the display of models in the model tent at the Usk show for many years.
You might be able to get more precise information from the membership secretary here
Finally: he was a worthy Technical Consultant retained by various editors of ME. If he was an employee of the publishers, does that have ramifications as far as copyright goes? |

John Haining - many thanks David at least for giving my suggestion some consideration. As you know, he was the author of two books, both of which are still available from Amazon, although, I don't know who the publishers are. They would have contact details if only to pay royalties to the estate.
Edward George (Martin Wallis) has also written a book about scale model traction engine construcyion and, as far as I can see, has more knowledge than virtually anyone else in this field, that knowledge might well extend to knowing the whereabouts of the Haining family.
The index for volume 194 - January to July 2005 has an entry for John Haining's obituary (pages 309 & 369) ; there may well be clues there. As this is only four years ago his widow may well be still alive and might be all too pleased to give the necessary permissions in memory of her late husband.
I did try http://www.192.com but the surname is not sufficiently rare to make sense of the entries.
Thank you for your efforts. |

David Clark 1 above is quite right but if you're still having difficulty click here |
Thread: Long URL's - a general plea |

Some very interesting posts are being made illegible by
the inclusion of lengthy URLs such as those of Jason B's
(11/06/2009) here
If you are unclear what an URL is, try here
David Carter 1 tells you how to do it in his post also of
11/06/2009 here
If I can do it as at anybody can.
Although, how do you identify a specific post rather than
doing it by using the date?

I'm wondering whether you have the copyright to John Haining's two construction series on the magnificent Fowler ploughing engines published in ME Vols. 147-148 and again Vols. 161 - 164.
For those unfamiliar with these engines further particulars can be found here
Alternatively, perhaps his estate would grant permission, for an appropriate percentage, for DVD-ROMs to be made of the series.

Try also Aldi the supermarket chain. www.aldi.co.uk They have a series of different 'special buys' throughout the year. My Powercraft 2.5h.p./25 litre compressor inclusive of an air tool kit comprising a tyre gauge/inflator, a long nozzle sprayer, a blow gun, a gravity feed spray gun and 10metres of air hose as well as an air-brush kit cost me £59.99 in March 2007. It is exactly the same model as the one branded Wolf regularly advertised for at least £99.99 in the quality Sunday broad-sheets.
Machine Mart currently charge £22.98 for the air tool kit and £25.29 for the air brush outfit.
I was also able to buy at seriously cheap prices a pneumatic nailer/stapler £14.99, a 9mm reversible air drill £12.99 and an air chisel and kit for £7.99. I had never seen such competitive prices - no contest!!
A word of caution though, the parking for my local Aldi is equipped with number plate recognition cameras and if you overstay the standard two hours you will find an unwelcome surprise landing on your door-mat in a few weeks that will wipe out most of the savings you've made!! |

I've bought aluminium offcuts: plate, bar and tube from the ebay shop run by
They sell ferrous as well as non-ferrous and are usually even more helpful to personal callers with cash!
Usual disclaimer.

It's a great shame that the history of ME copyright is such a tortuous saga. Our woodworking colleagues, especially those who subscribe to the American Fine Woodworking magazine have a wonderful resource in that they are able to purchase a single DVD-ROM containing 200 magazines worth of articles
If only that were the case for both ME and MEW.
I have no connection, financial or otherwise, with the Taunton Press.

Wessex residents and maybe those further afield may be interested in the fact that Myhobbystore Ltd seem to be employing minimal publicity to advertise their presence at the Southern Tool Show www.toolfair.co.uk.com to be held at Southampton's Rose Bowl on the 19th & 20th. The only mention I've seen is on the top right hand corner of page 613 of issue 4352 of ME. The prime movers of this event seems to be www.elliotts4tools.co.uk |
