Thread: This months MEW are 3 CNC features two too many
13/05/2011 22:32:34

As one who likes a good winge i have had several disapointing weeks recently,The weather
has been nice, The pension has gone up,I won a prize on the Premium Bonds, And
imigration to this country has fallen below two thousand a week,So you see i have had a
a very lean time,But the latest issue of m,e,w has fixed that! I can live with an artical or
two that has no interest to me,Other people have many varied interests outside of what i
like and i must be mindfull of this fact,But to find the latest issue stuffed full of cnc stuff
was very disapointing,In fact i the Product catalogue that came with it was much more
interesting,And i have to consider the latest issue as a total dud,

Hi Niloch
There is an ouside posability that it is depleated uranium,Which is a little
lighter in coulour than most brasses and considerably heavier,If you strike
it a glancing blow on a sharp edge tiny fragments can fly off with a cracking
sound And some of the fragments become incandescent as the fly through
air,Quite and interesting material,
Thread: Info & advice on Myford Speed 10 please (& other small lathes)
09/09/2010 22:35:18
Hi Beagle,
I bought a late model speed ten in exelent condition for£750bout four years ago,Came with lots and lots of extras,It was a long way up country,So the seller and myself agreed to meet halfway,Bit iffy buying a lathe without having seen it,But when i saw it it was exactly as described,The seller was a genuine sort of chap,The speed 10
was to replace an ml 10 which i sold for £400, The same as i paid for it,And i had had many years of work out of it,Which only goes to show a good lathe is an investment,
Peronaly i say buy a good Myford and your money is safe,I also have an ml7 and the
only thing that will do that the speed ten wont is swing a slightly larger diameter,Which
is handy once in a blue moon,

Hi Patrick,Thanks for taking the trouble to let me know that there is a branch of Cromwells realativly near me,I may bite the bullet and drive over there when the weather becomes a little more clemant,However, As the years go by and i grow a little older my driving circles seem to get smaller and smaller,So much so That Norwich is now almost abroad! lol,Best regards Charlie,

I would like to source a material the name of which i dont know,It would useualy be found in the corner of most tool rooms in a heated pot,It was amber in coulour, A bit like treacle,The toolmakers would use it to protect freshly sharpened cutters of all sorts as it prohibited rust and stopped the cutters etc chipping,One would just simply dip the cutter in it wait a few seconds and the job was done,Is this material still available? And can it be purchased?

Thank you chaps for your input to my question,And i can see now that the definitive answer is a bit more complicated than i antisipated,My knowledge of hardening dose
not extend beyond soaking an item in Kasenit overnight,Have a good new year and thanks,

If one needs to have induction hardened bedways reground will the hardness be reduced or lost altogether?,

Thread: Why do I do it?!
17/11/2009 21:18:25

 Hi tony,
Know the feeling, Been there lots of times,But in my workshop there is no such
thing as scrap,I useualy look upon my mistakes as having reduced a peice of
metal to a more conveniant size for another job,

Thread: Machining Castings

Hi James,
Your problem with the aparently hard casting might be that your first cut is not deep enough,In a manner of speaking you need to get under the crust,
