Thread: Mystery tool, What is it for,??
24/10/2011 20:31:51

Hi KWIL,
Have taken one more pic of the mystery item showing information stamped
on it, I am sorry there is not to mutch to see, I cant photograph what is not
there,It is plainly roll stamped and to go to the trouble of setting up a roll
stamping process would indicate that there would have been several of
t items about, maybe even a hundred or so, So whare are they and who
is using them?,
Charlie,
The new pic is in my what is this album,

Hi chaps
KWIL, Yes i will attemt to take a better pic of the serial numbur and the
motive although the motive is only faintly stamped,What i can see of it
looks vuagly familiar, I have an idea that i have seen that motive before
Posibly on an east German greasgun that i used to own,But i will do my
very best with the pic,But i havent found out how to use the flash on my
new camera,Its one of them with all the bells and whistles, Its got buttons
everywhare and i got big hands, I have a job picking it up without pressing
a button or changing a setting,Come back the Box brownie, All is forgiven,
Neil and Les, Have taken you sugestions onboard, You chaps have
realy been thinkin outside the box

Hi Malk
Thanks for your input,Button making, At least thats a new thought,
As good as any i have had so far, My knowledge of the item is sutch
that i cant agree or disagree with any of the sugestions made so far
but i do feel that no one has won the coconut yet,

Hi Andy
Yes the nose peice has what look like equaly space punchings,Which
leaves a small space under the main mandrell,In the past it has been
sugested that a cutting tool should ocupy this space and protrude through
the punchings to cut metal,But i cant see that it would do anything that a
large ball nosed cutter wouldnt do,Yes Robert it would make a good test
peice,If i could machine that to exact spec most of what i do would be a
lot nicer,Well now it seems that no definitive answer is forth comming,
What i was hoping for was for somone to Post saying OOH I know what
that is, Used to use one every day at my place of work, But its not hapening
So as Andy says the only way to find out what it is is to cut it up for stock
And the next day somone will tell me what its for,

Right Chaps
Here we go, I have an item that i bought from a car boot for a
fiver,I asked the bloke what it was and he said he didnt know
and said if he did he would have asked more for it,I liked the
look of it and bought it thinking that i would soon work out
what it was for,But it didnt happen, I still dont have a clue,
It has a number stamped on it and a weakly stamped symbol
which i cant make out,Its been with me bout five years and i
have shown it to many engineers, Some qualified and some
not quite so qualified, Not one of them came up with a plausible
answer,Its a nice looking thing but right now it just a usless
onerment, And i may dismantle it and use the bits for other
things,A die stock looks like a contender for some of the bits,
Can anyone out there save it from a fate worse than death,
I  have pics of it in my album,

Thread: pitt bull carriers,
21/10/2011 22:05:29

Hi robert ,
Signed for as damaged, What a good idea,Let somone else have
the sleepless nights,John!,If you ever need a pace maker dont
have it delivered by carrier,As for myself GLR diss have already
replaced the damaged item, And in doing so have made an old man
very happy,And of course this means that i will not hesitate to use
again when my needs dictate,
19/10/2011 22:42:42

I recently placed an order for a smallish quantity of materials from GLR diss,
The order was for some one and a half inch dia steel rounds and a number of
other fairly heavy items to include one two foot length of brass tube of 1 inch
dia x16g,The long parcel arrived in good time well padded and packed, But
on opening the parcel i found that the brass tube had been crushed both
ends for a length of at least 6 inces both ends,Now most of you will realise
that 16gauge brass tube is not exactly thin walled tubing,So one would have
stretch ones imagination to imagine the violence and abuse that package
was subjected to, So i phoned GLR and informed them of my disapointment,
There was no quibble or argument and i was assured that the item would be
replaced asap,Which did not surprise me as i have always had good service
from them,But this incident dose pose the question,What is the mind set of
a person who can treat valuable packages in this way,?,

Hi Chaps
I have been trying to upload pics armed with all the imformation
suplied by youall, I have not stuck strictly to instructions given
And to be honest i could not recite exactly how i done it, Just that
i put pic to be coppied onto the task bar prior to putting it into
album,It seems to have worked, And i am delighted but still not
what i would call confident, I suspect with more practice i may
eventualy become competant,Can anyone confirm they are
now visible,Thanks
Charlie,

Hi Chaps,
Thank you kindly for your input to my question Regarding the uploading
of pictures and images onto this site,As blowlamp has said its not
intuitive, And most of the things i have learned to do on the puter have
been learned folowing my gut feeling, But it dont work like that on ere,
And not wanting to diminish the help you have all contributed i must
thank Ady for his considerable input (How do you do that!,?)But please
dont tell me i dont think my brain will stand the load,

Hi Chaps,
I am not the sharpest tool in the box when it comes to computers,

Hi Peter
Yes i beleive i do have parts of it that are not totaly disassembled will
have a look tomorrow and and if posible i will take some pics,

08/10/2011 21:37:09
Hi Peter
I recently bought somthing very similar to the item shown in your pics,
Only mine was bout the same width but twice as long and the circular
hole had a peice of glass in it, I though it might have been some kind
of electric meter, But on opening it it was plain to see it was a very old
time switch of sorts, And it would have needed to be mounted on a
perfectly vertical surface as it had a lead pendulum hanging length
wise inside the case,I only paid a quid for it at a car boot so i took it
apart for bits n peices,
Thread: Martek Professional drill grinding jig

Hi richard,
I had an ordiary one of those,Drill sharpeners of the same name i spent
most of a weekend trying to get it to perform as it was suposed to in the
event i wasted my time,And the folowing weekend it was put in with the
junk for the car boot,(Did anyone out there buy it)The only alterative i had
to give it to someone i didnt like, But i decided against that,Time is short
and preciouse, Quit while your ahead,Bin it!,
Thread: Most stable small workbench design to date?
27/09/2011 21:55:33
Hi Steve
Cocerning workbenches, Have you considered old sideboards,They can
useualy be picked up at auction for well under twenty quid, Just make sure
you get one that is worm free,They can be chocked with peices of 2x4 to
the height that you want, And this useualy leaves lots of lovely space
underneath for storage, They come in many diferent shapes and sizes
with many diferent cuboard and drawer arangements, I have four in my
workshop, And i dont know how i would manage without them they are
surprisingly sturdy and even more sturdy if you do like Mr Withnell says
and secure them to the wall,
Thread: Time for reflection

Mr woodward,
I read your post several times because i was struggling to find the
point you where trying to make,I found it a bit vague,But i have to say
that untill now i have never been ofended by anything posted on this
forum and i like to think i have never ofended anyone else,And i think
we all realise that there are people on here who are not in the best
of health,But i like this forum and i am aware that there are people
on here who have forgotten more about engineering than i will ever
know,And hardly a week passes when i dont learn somthing off
off this site,And i like it as it is!,I supose it is inevitble that sooner
or later a rule changer will pop out of the woodwork,Which begs
The question, Havent you got any ironing to do,

Thread: mini mills - which is the best?
09/08/2011 20:42:32
Hi tim
I have had a WM16 mill for a couple of years, It came with a little green tool box
that i am very fond of, It a lovely little tool box,As for the machine itself, The slide
cover(with the texture of flat black chewing gum)came apart in under three weeks
with little use,The motor runs well enough in forward but struggles and hunts in
reverse,On any job over 20 minits i useualy blow a fuse which is fun to replace if
you have the machine backed up tightly against the wall as i have,I have used all
the fuses that came with the machine and i now make my own (to spec of course)
I dont use it a lot now as reading the blog on this site leads me to beleive that i
will inevitably encounter problems of a more seriouse nature,And i didnt pay that
kind of money to get into a rebuild project,I have all the projects i need right now,
And i use a Clark Metalworker with rhe square column for most of my milling
And i recon if you dont give it to much to do in one go it a helava machine for the
money,To sum up the WM16 gives me the impression that it was thrown together
by a group of retards working in an early learning center,But i do love that little
green tool box,Regards
Thread: bearing material,
28/07/2011 21:34:36
Thanks Nigel,
Have looked at your pics,Lovely bit of kit u got there, Is it finished yet,?
I think i will build one of them, When i have been born again and taught
to do my sums right,
And thank you David,
A good common sense reply to my question but not quite what
i had in mind,
Best wishes,
25/07/2011 20:55:54

Greetings,
Just wondering if one of you chaps might be able to enlighten me
with regards to the bearing material used in the construction of
the Stuart and Turner 10v engine,Is it cast? Or posibly extruded
And can it be purchased from another source, Perhaps by the foot?,
thanks,

Hi Colin,
A nasty experiance no doubt about it,But there is always a plus side to almost
any situation,Just imagine if you had decided to light up a fag, You would then
not have had to suffer all those ill efects,
