Thread: Clarkson Chuck - removing the centre |
24/08/2010 10:06:14 |
I don't know about your chuck, but the advice above often works. If you can , try freezer spray on the centre. When warm put into parrafin bath ,and hope it wicks up. |

I've revisited the strap-wrench photo, in the article he does say "tightening a chuck". BTW an old timing belt makes a good strap wrench. |
Thread: Miniature Depth Gauge MEW # 166 |

I'm surprised all you horny handed old timers need a non-slip surface, I would have thought the finger tips would scratch brass. |
Thread: Welding Courses |
31/07/2010 10:07:31 |
I've no idea what is available nowadays. I do know that night classes/ courses cost a lot. But what might be of interest to you is colleges often run basic welding courses, usually called something like "farm welding", might be worth looking for. |
Thread: Small Diesel Engines and Bio-Fuel |
20/07/2010 16:55:03 |
I don't know enough to argue the details, but, caster oil "disolves in methanol" ,ran grass track two strokes many years ago. Time engine to suit, ie. keep trying. Very true not efficient but will run on 100% methanol. The big problem of using productive land for growing fuel crops is the killer. Lots of work is going on all over the world to avoid this, and is showing promise. Making diesel from waste cooking oil is probably the best use for it ,soap as by-product. But will not solve the world problem ,but would solve mine if I could get enough old oil. |
Thread: Finding Centre Height |
20/07/2010 10:24:58 |
I just use a bar, turned to exact length, well 2 bars, one on cross slide, and one on top slide. Easy to see, and also can be felt with thumb nail. This may not be accurate enough for threading or very small dias. |
Thread: Cutting Aluminum Sheet/Plate |
20/07/2010 10:19:34 |
Interesting thread this, I'm using a cheap little jig-saw, with a fairly coarse "aluminium cutting" blade(makers description) this works fine on 1/2" aly with parafin lube, use a fence for straight lines. Some time ago I cut some plate, 1/4" I think, on a small table saw with a tipped gen. purpose wood blade, this worked well, but only with the blade hight set just over the matl. thickness, maybe the extra width of cut helped? |
Thread: Small Diesel Engines and Bio-Fuel |
20/07/2010 10:06:28 |
Yes, two-strokes will run on alcohol with oil mix, Jets need to be bigger, because of lower heat content of the fuel, but it probably won't make much difference on a little motor, on the plus side you can run a higher compression ratio. PS don't waste good beer, distill some of that rubbish home-made wine. |

Was once going to hitch to India and buy the diesel RE, then drive it back to Yorkshire. But got wed instead, B*****r. Back to thread, don't forget petrol engines, whatever no. of strokes, can run on alcohol, bio if ever I saw one. |

Can you borrow a small diesel, from a cement mixer or similar? The whole bio- fuel thing is a minefield, no puns intended,.Bio fuel is being made from algea in salt flats for an eg, Mr Diesels first engines ran on veg. oil. Rape oil residues used for cattle feed etc. etc.. More education a very good thing, good luck. |

I don't really know what you mean by small diesels. Model aircraft engine, compression ignition, really. But for demonstration purposes small true diesels, Lister, etc. are fairly easy to buy and run well on bio-diesel or filtered chip fat. |
Thread: Metal compatability problems? |
08/07/2010 09:07:55 |
There are lots of different types of aluminium, some good in seawater, some hopeless, I don't know of-hand which is best, but the chances of getting the correct one is remote, except maybe from the makers. Why not give them several coats of good paint? |
Thread: Bearing Extraction |
01/07/2010 14:46:04 |
Frank, Assuming you mean bearing inner stuck on shaft :-find disc with hole slightly bigger than bearing, weld to bearing, bearing expands and drops off, or at least you've something to hit. NB protect shaft etc. from spatter. Failing that they will often shatter if hit smartly. Eye protection etc. |
Thread: What price frustration? |
01/07/2010 09:37:19 |
I get very bored by all this far east/brittish stuff. I've a chinese lathe etc. and it needed setting up as expected. But the point is that eastern countries can make top quality stuff. It is up to the buyer to set the standards, and pay for them. |
Thread: Bearing Extraction |
01/07/2010 09:26:07 |
Not familiar with your motor, but in general, modern expensive stuff is worth paying local garage to press out and replace. Some require all the hub + bearing as an assembly replaced. I usually wack em out with big hammer, if outer ring stays in, weld a piece of scrap inside, then will usually drop out ,or hit that. |

Thanks to all. Bogs if I'd found the madmodder link when googling I'd never have needed to ask. |

Thanks, Terryd, just what I need, and like what I was thinking of!. I have difficulty imagining the finished shapes when grinding tools, for some unknown reason usually find it easier to grind in the vice with an angle grinder, mirror image almost. Finish on bench grinder when shape looks right.Your photos don't show at all in this forum, but ok from the link. Rob, not brave, just need to know, if you don't ask you never get. |

I would like some advice on grinding the cutting edge on a flycutter. This is fitted into lathe mandrel and will be used mostly to face square steel. I've searched the web and got loads of conflicting advice, some say " like a left hand lathe tool" and some with fancy chip breakers, most look fragile. My idea is a tapered end with radius-ed tip, with side relief., any ideas welcome. |
Thread: mock up materials |

I've used flooring offcuts for this sort of thing, the better quality stuff is good and doesn't warp. Also oak flooring offcuts. will take a coase tapped thread . |
Thread: Alignment of lead screw on CL300 |

Don't know a source for slotted c/slide. But can recommend drilling and tapping existing slide, M6 in my case. this was recommended to me by someone on this forum, I think Quite easy to do, especially if the slide is out for fettling. |
