Thread: Tow bar wiring loom |
23/08/2017 14:01:50 |
I've fitted towbars on all our cars. Usually the hard bit is getting at the fitting points, removing splash guards etc. Most towbars replace the rear impact bar. Saves a lot of money DIY. I would pay to get the wiring done on a modern car tho'. unless you really know what you are doing. |
Thread: Help with cold steel blackening |
20/08/2017 16:24:50 |
Don't do this job often, have used heat and quench in oil ,seams to work well. I use old engine oil, pref . diesel . It's very black , I always do it when no-body is watching. |

I live near Mike, in the AB area, I can't understand how I can send stuff away from here very much cheaper than I can get delivery here. |

The quality of the meths has been questioned before. It does seem to vary, mostly downwards. Have you tried a different brand/ supplier ? |
Thread: elevating barrow |

If you need to slit box section just take it easy, don't force it. When and if it starts to nip the disc, pull out and stop the machine. Then wedge the already cut bit with a screwdriver or similar . This is needed on most dismantling jobs because of locked in stress. |
Thread: Those were the days |

My father was no good at mending things. When he tried to repair the iron for mother he played safe and got her to test it. |

Thread: spirit level |
02/08/2017 16:23:07 |
This one is John Rabone & sons. makers. Birmingham. Don't know the age, was my G dads. Interestingly there maybe a backing behind the glass. Will try a clean, there are two semicircle holes to the side. Did the job with a red plastic one and didn't drop it once. |
Thread: cracked and chapped hands |

Lanolin every time, can be difficult to buy in some countries due to anthrax fears but heat- treated works the same. |
Thread: spirit level |

Thanks all. I don't like plastic but will have to buy one. Yes a light does help, LED torch in the cupboard, looks odd when people call though. |

A daft question maybe - I have an old brass and wood spirit level, Raybone, . I use it for general purpose jobs, trouble is the liquid has lost the colouring and it's difficult to see, esp. inside cupboards etc. Can anyone suggest a method of highlighting the phial ? I do not want to replace the glass or dismantle the thing - it's to old. |
Thread: Arduino &c for dinosaurs |
01/08/2017 11:19:54 |
Go for it -buy the thing and a book or two, not much money and you will learn something. My problem is I have to learn a complete new language, words don't mean what I think they mean. But you will get past this eventually. I bought one and when the winter comes hope to make progress. |
Thread: what to do with an old water pump |
28/07/2017 10:00:38 |
Good idea, I've got a few laid about from worn out well pumps but the 3000 revs made me think not worth it. |

One other problem, maybe- the Chinese seem to have bought up all the rare earths and other stuff needed , at least to make the current batteries .see what I did there! |

Who remembers when atomic power stations were first built ? Headlines - power will be so cheap it won't be worth sending out bills. A government enquiry into the future of computers ? They thought a market of 3 or 4 a year might be feasible. |
Thread: Welding square tubing - Warping! |
27/07/2017 09:45:01 |
It's not the heat that causes warping, it is the weld contracting. It took me years to understand that and be able to use it. |
Thread: Hand saw with depth stop? |
25/07/2017 11:50:11 |
Further on a depth stop- Just come across some hard plastic clips for clipping paper together- a bit would make a depth stop. |
Thread: uPVC door in closed position with broken lock |

Thread: Hand saw with depth stop? |

You can make a depth stop- bend a bit of thin steel into a channel shape then file to size and squash it onto the hacksaw blade. A drop of poxy glue if needed. Hard work though. |
