It's obviously caught the 'gearbox disease'!! I hope your problems will be simpler (and cheaper ) to fix, Neil. rgds Bill |

Thank you, ega and Neil. One would suppose that, after 80 years of stupidity, the message would have sunk in - but 'tis true "No fool like ... etc." As for mobile phones rgds Bill |

What I did today I cannot recommend!! Decided that a tidy/clean up was massively overdue and SWMBO was away for the afternoon. Much moving and sweeping and decison-making and just one more cabinet to move before knocking off for a cuppa. .. sort of 'Hoffnung at the Oxford Union' moment. 'Balanced' on the cabinet was my Perfecto shaper awaitng installation. The 'balance' was disturbed and its earthward trajectory was halted by my head!! Definitely cannot recommend it!! Now sitting with ice cubes wrapped in flannel on noggin and waiting for SWMBO to return and the inevitable 'discussion'. And the next clever idea ...! rgds Bill |

Thread: Outstanding Service |

Browsed this thread and noticed JS's transcript of his conversation with Yodel. Only just realised that it was dated 3 years ago - so they would have improved by now, wouldn't they? Ordered two 30 ltr bags of cat litter. Was informed that they would be delivered by Yodel. They were ... on two separate days. On each occasion the cardboard boxes were left just inside the gate of our (short ) drive, in the open air, in direct view of passer's by, without making any attempt to alert us (both at home, door bell fully functional). This was on two days when the forecast was for heavy rain (and it did!). In full view from the gate and some 20 feet and 10 feet respectively. is a fully covered car port and a deep recessed door 'porch'. "Pay peanuts etc." rgds Bill |
Thread: abrafile |
29/05/2017 23:46:38 |
Proper Abrafiles have long been out of production. Permagrit do a similar item but the attachments are much larger so you lose the Abrafile's advantage of being able to cut internal shapes from a very small incision. Opening in the market for a savvy entrepreneur? (Semi-pun intended) rgds Bill |

Charadam - Snap! The greatest influence at my Secondary school was the English master ,Geoff Bluett, and he introduced us to Bevis as a class reading exercise. Oddly, the only thing I remember clearly about it was the mention of a 'ha-ha' in the garden, Never heard of such a thing before and the explanation took some time to sink in, having little concept of large estate gardens. This same Geoff B was a fanatical fisherman and his (I believe) only book "Sea trout and occasional salmon" was much mentioned in class after publication. A few months back, out of idle curiosity, I googled the title and it is still available - at £34.00 ish!! Apologies for the blather but a sudden attack of nostalgia! rgds Bill Edited By Cornish Jack on 25/05/2017 11:11:30 |
Thread: London Airport to be controlled from 80 miles distance |
19/05/2017 14:48:15 |
Just to add to my previous, the extract below is from the Aeroplane magazine 'Roger Bacon' column many years ago. It was prompted by the use by BOAC and BEA of the PF/PNF system which (at that time) was almost unknown elsewhere. It subsequently proved to be a real life-saver but mocked at the time as too complex and confusing. Unarguably, this version of the instructions could be regarded as a little less than clear!!! rgds Bill |

Mike P - a 'go-round' such as you experienced is a perfectly normal and straightforward procedure. It is planned for on EVERY approach and (depending on circumstances) can be initiated as late as 'wheels on the ground'. Headings/tracks/heights to fly are pre-programmed and requires just one order from the Captain to initiate "Go round" (or "Go around" rgds Bill |
Thread: Is Knurling a health hazard? |

The mention of Porton Down takes me back to my time at A&AEE Boscombe. One of the (D) Helo Sqdn tasks was the annual deer count for culling estimates. The wild life at Porton was quite amazing - apart from a VERY special orchid (protected by its own fencing), the deer were in marvellous condition and the foxes were the sleekest, healthiest looking examples I've ever seen. Presumably being fenced in and, generally, undisturbed, provided an ideal habitat. Funny combination of function ... nasty nasties and ultra eco-friendliness!! rgds Bill |
Thread: Simple Cad Drawing start-up..... |
13/05/2017 22:01:43 |
Bit late in the day, but, combining simplicity and 3d design, I used Sweet Home 3d - must be simple 'cos I managed and it is free and has a fairly comprehensive library of 'bits and pieces'. I found it particularly useful because I can't visualise 3d from 2d plans. rgds Bill |
Thread: Aircraft General Discussion |
11/05/2017 16:26:11 |
There is an old aircraft saying that "anything that looks right will fly right". Doubt is occasionally expressed as "Pigs might fly" ... looking at mp's pics, I wonder which is most apposite? rgds Bill |

Thread: The diesel controversy |
03/05/2017 16:08:38 |
"Now that is an example of a really closed mind. We need to solve the PM problem not scream "my diesel car is not the problem"." What on earth prompted that Teddy thrown from the pram?? This constant (and only relatively recent) wittering on about 'diesel pollution', as distinct from all the other rubbish spilled into the atmosphere, may well have some political convenience (keep the plebs arguing about something, anything) but is very much a child of the moment. I have no particular axe to grind pro-diesel but the realistic alternative IS petrol, NOT electric. Straight amps are almost entirely dependent on wiggly amps and they cause pollution in production. I should, perhaps, point out that I come from an era when a half day in a clean white shirt needed a replacement and when buses had to be guided by a pedestrian! Pollution? - you don't know the half of it! rgds Bill

Diesel cars, diesel lorries, vans, ships even motorcycles and aircraft and ALL referred to as 'diesels' . They are different!! The major polluters are the lorries, taxis and ships. If we look at cars and compare diesel v petrol we have to consider usage, and research tells us that the MAJORITY of car journeys are short < 15 miles. Why is that significant? Because petrol cars require their catalytic exhaust systems (supposedly reducing emissions) to be up to working temperature to be effective. For most of those short journeys the 'cat' won't be working. Diesel, on the other hand works, as advertised, from the word go. And just how much of the present blather has included the above? The late Paul Daniels summed it up -"Not a lot!" rgds Bill |

"banging and spluttering" was much more associated with a throttled-back merlin than the Herc and Centaurus. Having flown the Valetta (Hercs) and Beverley (Centaurus) we would never have been aurally mistaken for a Merlin. Sleeve valves are so much less obtrusive! rgds Bill |

Martin - I have one similar ... and in similar condition - at least, it was until I soaked it in Vaporust(?). Cleaned up quite nicely again. The rust on mine was residual from salt water immersion and poor storage but, when it was useable previously, it was invaluable. The separate gripping layers and their variety of shapes make it possible to securely grip almost any shape - super bit of kit! rgds Bill |

Dave et al - the change to Linux is very much to be recommended, BUT, Microsoft have doubled their efforts to avoid you setting up a dual boot Linux/W10 system. Their latest version prevents access to the bios by the usual means, so the Linux installation fails. The answer, of course, is to remove W10 entirely, reformat the HD and install Linux from scratch. Have just put Cinnamon Mint on a W7 machine as dual boot and can highly recommend it. rgds Bill Edited By Cornish Jack on 20/04/2017 11:30:25 |
Thread: Scroll Saws Again |
09/04/2017 11:16:39 |
Scroll saw versus piercing saw ?? Same as filing versus milling machine - 'you pays your money and takes your choice' The MAJOR item in the equation, however, is the blade. Well worth lashing out on the more expensive types. I think the last lot I bought were 'Flying Dutchman' or something similar - well regarded in the scroll saw brotherhood, I understand. rgds Bill |
