Bazle,

Here's one for a Wickman multi spindle http://www.autoturn.biz/catalog/wickman-flat-generating-thread-milling-rolling-ball-slots-attachment-b50.htm

I worked for a machine tool agency as a service engineer and the company sold WERA Profilators, initially the tool was geared to the chuck to cut shapes internally and externally, they then progressed to using CNC and we installed machines at the Leyland plant at Longbridge to manufacture the synchro gears for the gearboxes, I still find it hard to see hows its done even though I worked on the machines.

The flat surfaces are flat but when checked there are slight curves.

As a machine tool fitter I used to work on Wickman multi spindle lathes which were fitted with what we refered to as pecking units which were also geared to a spindle to cut hexagons on diesel fuel injector bodies and a cam fed the tool into the job.

Fizzy,

Get hold of some flat sheets of steel, 6' x 2', four lengths that you can lay on any uneven surface, grass, concrete etc to give you a smooth surface for your rollers/wheels or hire a set of machine movers.

Ian S C,

I bought a job lot of copper soldering irons of various sizes, 30 +, sorted out the spares and sold them on and those I kept I use regularly for soldering my engine fuel tanks together, greater control and your not chasing the solder around the job with a flame.

Ian,

I collect Camping Stoves, Primus, Optimus etc and I've found that if the tanks are over filled they will prime the jet pipe and will create a large fire ball.

Ady1,

Have you made my day, that is one article I've never seen before, would it be possible to PM me the two pictures please.

Grandad used to sail Smokey on Victoria Pond and as kids my brother and I used to break the coal up to fit into the fire box, the boiler in Smokey is a different one to the one I have, Smokey was fitted with a compound engine and later she had for a short time a Triple expansion engine, a kit from Stuarts which my mother has now. Smokey was sold at a big auction house in London to raise funds for his widow.

Jesse, There are twin stoke holes.

Gentlemen thanks,

Gentlemen,

I was helping my wife dust my pieces and thought I would take a picture to show you, this boiler was I think made for my Grandfather by Bonds of London for his Tug "Smokey", it may not be the same one, very much alike, but there was a short article in Model Engineer, at least 40+ years ago, about a Boiler that Bonds were making for somebody. Can anybody confirm that it might be known as a Scotch Boiler.

Thank you.

over thirty years ago I and a friend made our regular visit to the Saturday morning Auction in Colchester where I found a box of junk, proper rubbish with a Sievert torch a gas regulator and a few nozzles stuck at the bottom, which I got for less than £10 which I've used regularly since and added several nozzles from a fine flame to blowlamp size, it gets used to soft solder petrol tanks together and generally heating metal.

I favour a cat, when I go into our garage to work he follows me in a checks over the place, havent had mice for years, apart from the odd dead one our feline fetches in just to prove he's doing his job and in return we give him the odd bit of food and lots of fuss, trouble with traps are should you not have a mouse for a while and you forget to check it leaves a bit of a smell which isn't immediately obvious smiley

Thread: No. 4501 The MEX Judges Reports
06/02/2015 19:23:56

The problem with judging competitions is that its subjective, no one person looks at something the same way as others, even if they are given guide lines to follow these are interpreted differently. In my main hobby there is judging for the best engine, one week a heap of rubbish wins and the following week another engine wins because it is nice and shiny because that is what the judge wanted.

Gentlemen,

I use bootlace ferrules in my everyday job and agree with what has been said but it should be made aware that the ferrules are cheap but a good crimping tool can be expensive, I use another tool to do the crimping but dare not tell you what for fear of the backlash wink

Thread: Compressor oil.
05/02/2015 19:55:24

Several years ago I was given an old industrial compressor and tank powered by a 3ph 3hp motor, I acquired a single phase 3hp motor and fitted it and set it all up and switched it on, the motor was fitted with a centrifugal switch so run up reasonably quickly, no sooner was it running when my wife appeared at the garage door and said that her television had reduced its picture to a little white dot so we went in doors and found the TV working ok, so back to the garage and I started the compressor again to the tune of its doing it again, I never did tell her it was me causing the tv to go awol I just made sure I always had plenty of air and ran the compressor when swmbo wasn't watching her box.wink

I use a 7.5 cfm compressor for driving small tools, an orbital sander, air gun, die grinder, snips, hammer gun and a nail gun for taking paint off of castings which does use up the air but I supplement this with a truck brake tank which extends the running time and also takes longer to fill but it doesn't bother me as its not regularly used, not used it for spraying yet.

Michael,

Never had a problem, I use it for cosmetic purposes on the outside, cracks and breakage.

Ian,

When I repair the bakelite/plastic caps for magneto's I mix carbon dust with Araldite to match the black of the cap.
