If you are near Manchester then there are some great, less advertised museums..... Some of my favorites: For textile machinery and some steam/water power Styal Mill is really good... A mile from Manchester airport **LINK** There is enough there for the non technical too All of these are heavy on exhibits, my kind of museum!
+1 for The Anson Museum, as someone who collects stationary engines I visit the museum at least twice a year for events and a look around, it and Internal Fire Museum of Power are the premier museums for big Industrial engines in this country. Martin P |

Here are a couple of pictures of a vertical bandsaw I recently moved on to a new home, the previous owner had modified it to slow it down. Sorry about the pictures, they are upright on my laptop. Martin P |

Yes it's an Inca saw. The 32 tpi blade cuts brass no problem but seems to load up when cutting aluminium. May need a coarser blade I guess. I have a pair of bandsaw wheels so could have a crack at making a steel cutting saw. Mick Plasma, Get your local saw doctor to make you a skip tooth blade, take your current one to him for the length and tell him what your trying to do and he should give you the correct tpi and skip tooth. And this has something to do with model engineering or am I missing something important? This is also ignoring the fact that only a limited age range of members will understand "NSU Quickly".
Thats a bit strong, I dont do model engineering, I restore Stationary Engines but I use a lathe and milling machines to make parts, by the way its a moped and was quite a good one. Martin P |

As to not hearng a car in a car park.. well I'm against adding some synthetic sound - it'll make little diference to the mass of folk with headsets on or starting at mobile phones or fighting with kids and shopping trolleys and is just noise pollution. There are enough varieties of electric vehicle being silent out there that the public just needs to, and will adapt. Interestingly one of the safety features of the Tesla is that if it hits a pedestrian (within certain speeds) it's supposed to explosively blow the rear 'frunk' bolts to turn the bonnet into more of a cushion.
I found it sad that you think that the public should adapt to your car, the manufacturers/owners should adapt the vehicle as its them that made it quiet, fitting flashing lights or sound alarms using proximity sensors would be cheap and easy to do. I fitted a reversing camera to my car after spending £350 repairing my nearside rear wing when I backed into a refuse bin that I couldnt see, I still use my mirrors as well. Martin P |

Mike, There lies the rub, a commercial vehicle is of no use because my wife is an invalid and can only just get into our car let alone a van, rally sites impose a curfew on the use of generators usually after 22:00, I cant even fully charge properly my wifes and my mobility scooters because they need more than four hours constant charging. I can describe Teslas cars as very very expensive and well out of my pocket, £75,000 new and 7hrs charging at 220 vac, in a field impossible. One of my engines to drive to drive a suitable generator would need to be at least 10hp, an engine of this size that I show would weigh at least two ton and impractical. My Subaru diesel returns on a good run 52 mpg, with my trailer in tow with a load it will manage 35 mpg so I think it fair to assume that an electric vehicle that has a 600 mile range will halve its range when towing its own weight as well as itself. Sadly all this modern technology, hybrid and electric vehicles etc is going to ruin my hobby, I havent seen one electric/hybrid with a tow bar because I suspect that their towing capability is either zero or a lot less because of the distance it will travel pulling 1 to 2 ton loads like I currently do and as I spend my weekends in the middle of fields I wont have the means to charge them either to get home, their is also one very big draw back and that is I cant afford to buy one at todays prices and I would also worry about buying second hand because there is no way I would be happy with second hand batteries and again new replacements would outway the price of the vehicle. No, the brake lights should not switch off after being stationary for so long. I leave my brake light on until the next vehicle has surely seen that I am stationary. It is a bit debatable exactly how much pollution stop/start avoids. I can, and do, stop the engine if I am going to be stationary for some time. It is not difficult. So you have avoided my invite as to which group of drivers you fit? These days, the default group is ‘aimers and steerers’, I’m afraid. Many years ago I was sat on the M11 in a long queue caused by an accident, on my right sat a chap in a saloon, Mercedes,BMW or Audi not sure Sort of cheers your day up. Martin P

I dont have many gizmo's on my 2009 Subaru Forrester but one I do have is hill start, I find it useful particularly when I have a loaded trailer attached. Martin P |

I'm forever sending my crystal ball back for repair, it gets overloaded to often trying to work out for me what the car in front is going to do, I avoid anybody driving a BMW like the plague because they always want to be in front of you no matter what it takes, occasionally they get what's due, a couple of Sundays ago I took my wife to do the weeks shopping and because of her physical problems we park, with a blue badge, in a disabled space, a white BMW pulled up next to us and my wife commented that the driver didnt have a badge, he went to a cash machine and came back to the car started it put it into gear and hit a concrete bollard rather hard in front of him, obviously the wrong gear, I said to my wife no matter justice has been served. I don't care how dry the air is, cold air doesn't melt ice on the outside. If I want the aircon on, it's not exactly onerous to press a button. Edited By duncan webster on 26/04/2019 15:19:14
My 10 year old car turns the Aircon on with the heater when I direct the air to the screen, according to the manual this dries the moisture and clears the inside very quickly and in my view it works, its still hot air but dryer. Martin P |

Martin, With two months gone since that was news, you really must get out of that workshop more It was a program this week on National Geographic that brought it to my attention, I'm always interest in rocket launches and space but missed this completely Martin P |
24/04/2019 21:51:51 |
Gentlemen, Was anybody else aware that on the 22nd of February this year SpaceX launched a rocket to put three objects into space, two were Satellites and the third was a lander built by Israel which after six weeks would attempt to land on the moon, relatively this was done on a shoe string and the craft made it all the way and was in the process of landing when a computer glitch caused the engine to switch off, the Israeli engineers managed to get it fired up again but sadly it didnt slow enough and crashed on the moons surface **LINK** . Surely the simplest method is to find a hire company or garage who has one of these **LINK** , no dismantling, quickly done. Wheeler dealears use one in their programme, no connection with the company shown. Martin P |

Guessing that uses of these would be injection moulding, diesel fuel injectors and clearly air bearings. Any examples of others? Do they, I wonder, really need to fit piston rings to F1 engines these days! Although a minute temperature difference between parts might cause interference? In the sixteen years I worked for Lucas CAV diesel fuel injectors where not manufactured with this method, needles were manufactured using centerless grinders to a nominal dimension the nozzle body was internally ground to a nominal dimension and finished with honing of the bore. using air gauges the diameter of the needle and nozzles were measured and matched to a very tight tolerance. Neil, I just did and there is more space because I've transfered the contents of the old work tool bag into two tool cabinets, the shelf for under the bench will be made tomorrow and the only time the space will disappear is when I plonk half of my 20 stone frame on a stool and my legs slide under it Martin P |
19/04/2019 15:32:36 |
Having sold two of my stationary engines last weekend I now have a space in my garage so yesterday I built a work bench with a storage shelf underneath, the bench is made from a 50mm kitchen worktop and 4" x 2" treated timber.
