Thread: How to de-oil an oilstone?
21/06/2019 12:21:46

A way of resurfacing a worn oil stone is to use a face mill in the vertical milling machine, use worn out tips in the face mill, keep the speed down. I think I spotted the idea in an old "Model Engineer" mag.

Thread: Odd sized strong bar
19/06/2019 12:43:44

Some of the 1/4" drives seem to be nearer to 6 mm, the sockets seem OK, just the drivers are a bit sloppy.

Thread: Improving runout in a slitting saw
18/06/2019 14:15:43

I was watching U tube the other day, the chap was using a slitting saw, he mentioned that all the saws tend to ching ching, but once he got cutting he upped the feed until he got continuous cutting sound.

Thread: Thomas from Hornby
18/06/2019 14:08:49

I needed a 3 flute screw driver, so I ground the end of a worn out Philips screw driver, then with the Dremel tool ground in the 3 flutes, job done, now I'v got a screw driver that I'll probably never use again.

Thread: Horizontal mill cutter
18/06/2019 14:02:27

Even my Rexon vertical milling machine has about 1.5 hp, and that at times feels underpowered, I would say 2 hp would be a starting point for a horizontal mill, maybe 2.5 hp if electronically controlled.

Thread: Model Turbines
17/06/2019 16:10:42

A generator run on a small turbine, or any small power source would be pushing it to get to 50% efficiency, so there will be quite a difference between the electrical output and the brake HP measured with a Prony Brake, an interesting little experiment on it's own.

Ask the cricketers where the water comes from(World cup cricket at the moment in England and Wales).

Thread: Free cutting mild steel
17/06/2019 15:44:59

I find no difficulty turning hot rolled "mild Steel"(no spec) with a fairly worn Box-Ford A using HSS or carbide tools.

Thread: Cheap Carbide Lathe Tools
17/06/2019 15:36:36

For a handy source of tips for the like of small boring bars get hold of a worn out carbide tipped circular saw(one of those round things with teeth for cutting brown stuff), remove the remaining carbide teeth, these can then be brazed into a home made tool holder. Watch out the tips are ground alternately left and right. Sorry it does not show up too well.

My answer to quality complainers is if you can make for the same price at better quality why are you not doing it. Admittedly quite a bit of the price goes to the retailer in mark up.

Thread: Naerok 350 mill
15/06/2019 12:39:54

If you put Naerok in the search window just above your name at the top of the page you will find a manual there that you can save or down load. I found it handy as I have the same mill although here in New Zealand it is called Rexon, still made in Korea.

I have a centre fold chart in the workshop, can't remember if it came from Model Engineer, or Model Engineer's Workshop.

Thread: Class 22 Diesel (next project)
11/06/2019 14:27:00

Ron, I'd tend to use hard shim washers, similar to those found in electric motors, if I need them, and can't find what I want in the junk box I go to my bearing supplier who has all those sort of goodies. Some times there is a nylon/plastic washer between two steel washers.

Welcome Mike, yes we would love some pics, your contraption doesn't need to be beautiful to be photogenic.

Thread: Model aircraft pilots angry over drone laws
09/06/2019 14:22:24

Members of model aircraft clubs pay a membership fee, and as members have training classes, and are schooled up on CAA regs covering their sport. There is quite a bit on "drones" in the Wings over New Zealand web site, I tghink it's in the NZ Civil aviation section.

I know that there are some model aircraft in the Christchurch club that could in the wrong hands do major damage.
