Don't know about finding subs, but the Dutch Cat dented it's nose when it landed with the nose wheel retracted after a hydraulic failure. Ian S C |

I hope you got ALL of the soft solder off the job before you silver soldered, the joints may look ok now, but if contaminated there is a good chance of failure in the future. Ian S C |

That's great David, those engines (Napier Sabre) are a master piece in complication, there is a cut away one at the RNZAF Museum in Christchurch NZ. In my above post I actually meant to put Tempest, the Tornardo was the aircraft that was developed before the Typhoon, and lead on to the two later aircraft. Today you could keep a squadron of Spitfires in the air for less than the cost of one Typhoon, good on them. Ian S C Edited By Ian S C on 29/07/2018 12:20:03 |

For a cast iron bearing , oil it from a hole in the end of the shaft, and form a felt filled well in the bottom half of the bearing. Ian S C |

The only major problem keeping the Typhoon from flying is the engine, there just arn't any servicable Napier Sabres, and they would be far too costly to overhaul to flight standards, most unfortunate, I love the Tiffy, and the later Tornardo. Ian S C |

I missed it, but the eclipse in NZ was a bit rare (they gave it a name last night on TV), it was (when not obstructed by cloud), visible just as the sun rose to the east, and the moon set to the west, At my latitude it lasted about 4 minutes. I see colder weather is coming to northern places. Ian S C |

Just looking at the Warco add in ME for the "All New Super Minilathe", it quotes under specifications , Speed range:50 - 1100 / 120 / 2500rpm with back gear for maximum torque. This lathe has a centre height of 90 mm, and 350 mm between centres. I'll stick with my 1326 belt head, back geared Taiwanese lathe, no fancy electronics, plenty big enough, and when I bought it in 1986 I could have bought three of them for the price of a Myford Super 7, and still have something over, and that was in the same shop. One way to keep the size of the bearing within limits is to use needle roller bearings, ideally the shaft should be hard, but for lighter use, a unhardened shaft should give many hours of use, or you can get a sleeve that fits on the shaft. Ian S C |

There is the possibility of fabricating one from steel, a welder would be handy but not essential. Ian S C |
Thread: Self starting small steam engines |
28/07/2018 10:40:15 |
When someone comes up with an idea, I'll be interested, I would like a starting system for Hot Air / Stirling Engines. I often read that one of the disadvantage of the hot air motor is that it is not self starting, but neither is an IC engine. Among prime movers only steam seems to be able to be designed to self start, unless you count in electric motors. Ian S C |

Why wash a car?, I remember seeing a car in Dunedin (NZ), probably a Uni student's pride and joy, covered in dust and dirt, and on the rear window, carefully written by finger, "don't wash me,grow something". I think the reason that the bits off one machine won't fit another is to tru and make you stick to the same make, then again you go back a few years later and find that that maker's bits won't fit the old model, sorry I don't know! Hopper beat me too it, but building at 12 inch to the foot is just large scale modeling. You will read of some here who proclaim that they don't do brown stuff(wood that is), ignore them. Don't get absolutely hung up on Myford, a good one is OK, but from what I see from afar is your likely to be "fleeced". Here' Ian S C Edited By Ian S C on 28/07/2018 10:17:52 |

Had a Nylon job the other day, doing repairs on one of our machines, just needed to shorten a Nylon chain guide 3" diametre by 1/.4", the block was 3" long, put it in the 3 jaw chuck, and using a fairly general purpose tool(the one that happened to be in the lathe), lined up and took the 1/4" of in one cut at about 350 rpm. A clean cut, no tangles. Ian S C |
Thread: EN24T or P20 steel - anvil material |

P-20 steel. As bought it is tempered at 482 - 593*C, giving a Rockwell Hardness of 37 - 28. Anneal at 760 - 788*C, cool in furnace at 4*C or slower. Hardening: heat to 871 - 899*C in the carburizing medium, then heat to 816 - 871*C to harden, hold fot 15 minutes then quench in oil. Just a bit of useful trivia for someone. Ian S C |

There is a danger with dilute sulphuric acid. if it is splashed on a surface the water tends to evaporated leaving concentrated acid. Watch how you hold lead acid batteries, I remember that if held against my overalls, the front of them got eaten away in a fairly short time. The supposedly "spill proof" batteries that we used in aircraft weren't. Ian S C |

There is a colour code that may help, black and red are live, and white is neutral. If you have the "Popular Mechanics do it yourself encyclopedia", go to vol 5 page 885, and that will give a simple run down on US domestic wiring. Ian S C |
