Thread: Stress Relieving Rolled Mild Steel |

After heating, the quench should be quick and for a rod or bar it should go in vertically, put it in sideways and you have a fair chance of getting a bend in the article. Ian S C |

A hard brush will cause gum damage. Ian S C |

Is the wood there to perhaps dampen vibration (as in tuning fork effect) in the lathe bed. Ian S C |
Thread: Using magnets |
05/04/2019 12:51:05 |
To avoid damage to you or the magnet, and make it easier to get apart, always slide them together, it's easy to trap a little bit of flesh if the magnets have nice square edges. Ian S C |
Thread: Knurling speed |
05/04/2019 11:52:22 |
I use low back gear with the knurl I use the most, it is made from a ciggy lighter flint wheel, and produces a nice fine straight knurl. Ian S C |

I'v got a couple of telephone magneto magnets on the end of a broom stick, first assembled to pick up nails after a roofing job at our museum at Homebush. Ian S C |
Thread: Using a propane cylinder for partable compressed air. |
05/04/2019 11:32:20 |
In use on a compressor you could mount the gas cylinder as I have done with an ex RNZAF low pressure oxygen bottle(probably from a Hudson or Ventura bomber), with the inlet at the bottom end(outlet and gauge at the top), tank mounted vertically, and fed from the compressor via a water trap, any water that gets by the trap on the way in, drains back to the trap after switch off. Hopper, with the shrader valve, if you were out and about in a vehicle the tank could be refilled using a 12V portable compressor, some of those will go to near 150 psi. Another power source (an Australian invention I think), A chainsaw attached to a car alternator in place of the chain. Ian S C Edited By Ian S C on 05/04/2019 11:35:16 |
Thread: broken calipers |
04/04/2019 10:58:13 |
Hi Neil, wondered how you got on with your spring. I'v got 2 pair dividers, 2 pair inside and 1 pair outside calipers, fingers crossed they are all OK, I don't think any of them are less than 50 years old. Ian S C |

Also the ballraces in VHS recorders/players, including some with as small as 3 mm bore in the nylon tape guide rollers, the others are usually 6 mm bore. Good ferite magnets from old modern speakers, and micro wave ovens. Ian S C Edited By Ian S C on 04/04/2019 10:51:15 |
Thread: Rulers - my pet peeve |
04/04/2019 10:42:41 |
I was taught at school that a ruler was a King or Queen, and you use a rule for measuring or ruling a straight line. Danny M2Z, From what I read (in Electronics Australia) twenty or so years ago Rules with imperial, and metric graduation were illegal, the mentioned a shipment that were imported from Malasia for the education dept in Queensland, customs found a shipment them and had them all destroyed. They had to be metric only. Ian S C |
Thread: Soft Feel Finish on Radio |
03/04/2019 10:58:55 |
Twenty five years ago we bought a couple of dozen wheels ex Willys Jeep, govt surplus, and the tires had gone the other way, they were as hard as iron, mostly cut off with the angle grinder, they had been stored outside for a good many years, but the wheels cleaned up like new. I was at the time helping to restore/rebuild Jeeps. Ian S C |

Another thing with high carbon steel, don't use the electrolitic method of derusting , you get the same result as the hydrochloric acid. Ian S C |

Fairly large for a needle, 4 mm dia, you might find a knitting needle that size, although the steel knitting needles I know of are double ended for socks, and 2 mm 3 mm dia. Ian S C |

Last year the grips on the handle bars of my bike went into melt down, what a sticky mess that was. No Chinese bike that one, a Marin, made in USA. Ian S C |
Thread: Fixed vertical metal bandsaw? |
30/03/2019 10:57:02 |
Using a 4" x 6" horizontal/vertical bandsaw, we cut all the steel for 60 of these plus other jobs, the machine is for feeding out large square hay bails. One motor died when the saw was left unattended while the boss was having his tea(evening meal), the blade jammed, and all the magic smoke escaped, and things got a bit hot and bothered(not only the motor). Thread: Fork and blade conrods |

Good chance the RR con rods came from a Merlin engine. The Merlin had its cylinders opposite each other (instead of staggered), this keeps the engine a bit shorter, and lighter. Ian S C |

Also, as I warned the blokes at the Menzshed a couple of days ago, if you use it for metal, then wood you might end up with metal imbedded in the wood, which might not be too good for chisel work etc. Ian S C |
Thread: Tri leva grease and bar removal help |

When a fitting is held in place with a grub screw, check down the hole for a second one, the top one may be just locking the one that is actually doing the work. (I have not got one) I have heard of this situation on Myford lathes. Ian S C |
Thread: Newbie with a chuck query |

One thing that could help with the spacer method would be to magnetise the spacers, yes it will soon end up all furry. Maybe double sided adhesive tape might do it, just to help setting up. Ian S C |
