Thread: Soft floor and lathe... |

As you are in a cellar.it sounds like the floor is layed on battens on the original cellar floor. If this is the case why not remove a section of the timber overlay and level back up with concrete. Frank |

There are 4 wires other than the two capacitor wires. There is the earth wire a mauve and also a black wire in one spade connector and a brown wire in a spade connector. The mauve and black wires had brown tape wrapped around them and the brown wire had blue tape wrapped around it. I hope this is clearer. Frank |

Thread: Workholding Problem |

I would use a wooden dowell or a piece of brush shaft glued onto the item to be machined with gorilla glue, the foaming type and clamped in the vice overnight. You would have to drill a hole in the dowell to incorporate the spigate. Next day set up in the four jaw and machine. When finished I would saw the wood off close to the steel but in this case you would have to split it off and using an old wood chisel to shave of the adhesive.I learned this from an article by Brian Wood . Thread: What Did You Do Today 2021 |

My weekend has got even better,I have just got my Rockerthump engine to run. |
21/08/2021 19:14:48 |
I had a good day as I have solved a problem on my SX3.This required me to dismantle the machine with the aid of a download on ARC's website .My problem has been the quill which would not return on the spring which I replaced thinking this would solve it and I have always, from new had a problem with the fine feed which would jam after locking, and I had to knock it back to return to the digital reading.I found after the removal of the handle spindle that the fine feed gear on the spindle was jamming on and a lot of force was required to move it.I had to hammer this off and I then scraped it until it rotated freely,on reassembly it worked but the fine feed did not ,I think that the ball bearings in the spindle, lock the gear as there is a shallow groove in the gear collar.I will ring Ketan on Monday to find out how this works. Thread: valve diagrams |
19/08/2021 12:35:20 |
I have the timing sequence for my engine. A diagram I looked at, shows the timing on the opposite side of TDC to mine.It shows an arrow for rotation and I don't know wether this is for the flywheel or the camshaft ,could someone enlighten me please. Frank |
Thread: Timeing |
07/08/2021 15:08:12 |
Kevin, the engine is a Rockerthump By Brian Rupnow.I have built his Rockerblock and that ran a treat .It is stated that the inlet valve opens 20Degrees before TDC.Thanks to all for the input . Frank

I have finished a 4 stroke single cylinder open crank engine and am having dificulty in starting it.Compression is good and I have had the valves out and reground them .I have looked up valve timeing for 4 stroke model i/c engines and some diagams show the ignition before the input valve opens and this puzzles me,is this correct.Any help on this would be good. Thread: New Chuck won’t screw on |
31/07/2021 07:40:04 |
35 years ago I had a Myford Ml10 and from Myford I bought a 4 jaw chuck. This would not go on and Myford sent out a man in a suit to sort my problem. He used hand chasers to sort the problem. That sort of service is unheard of today.Perhaps buying the correct hand chaser would be an option to fitting of poor threads. |
Thread: Blown Bricks : Advice please ! |
14/07/2021 18:53:58 |
Having been a bricklayer and general builder until retirement. I have never seen bricks as bad as those and remedial work of any kind leads me to believe you will continue to have the problem.Just a suggestion if the wall is sound and it is the cosmetic appearance you are concerned with, clad it with verticle feather edge boards or another choice of material, but don't render. The locks on these doors need to be lubricated at regular intervals which seldom happens,it's not suprising that the parts wear out. Frank

Thread: Drill sharpening? |
08/07/2021 20:23:13 |
I always ground my drills freehand until a friend who was clearing his workshop came across a Delta drill sharpener. He didn't know how it worked and neither did I until I looked it up on the net and found out that it was missing some bits.I machined up the parts and coppied the instructions, bit of learning curve but when I got the hang of it I got good results.I think it was war surplus as it is American. The instructions I downloaded are very good. When in business I paid my tax twice a year. After paying I got a letter from HMRC saying I had underpaid,by 2p I could leave it for six months and they would charge me interest on it.My wife who kept my books wasn't having any of this and posted the 2p in an envelope. We recieved a reciept for the 2p.How much it cost to action this for 2p I have no idea but it was more han 2p. Thread: Ward Capstan Lathes |
31/05/2021 14:40:29 |
I owned a Ward 2A which I bought to turn up the wheels of my 2" traction engine as they would not fit on my Myford. It cost £300 and I found it useful for many jobs,I loved the ridgity of it but it had a 5 horse single phase motor when starting I had to ease the clutch in slowly or all the house power would fuse.I neede the space so it had to go and I sold it to a local factory for whatI paid for it. Thread: Any views on using Fairy Liquid in a concrete mix |
25/05/2021 20:44:54 |
I have run several 4and 2 gangs of bricklayers and fairy is not used in concrete but is better than febmix in mortar and if you lay bricks with our local sand you would be pleased to add a dash of fairy .Used it for all of my fifty years in the building trade and of all of the washing up liquids fairy is the cheapest and best in the long run as you only use a squirt, and after all this time 10years since I retired I havn't seen any deteriation in the buildings I worked on.
