Spray insulation can cause some people to have an adverse reaction to it.I have a friends who built their own barge,they had the insulation sprayed onand boarded over.She can no longer spend time on the boat as she is always ill after a weekend aboard.So be aware of the risks associated with this form of insulation.

There was an article in I think the Model Engineer recently that was a lever attachment that fastened onto the stem of a DTI .This would work for centreing holes on the mill.I can't find the magazine as I would have liked to make these attachments for myself.

I have built the 2" scale Burrell Gold Medal Tractor and I found it very difficult to make and fit all the fiddly bits.Your workmanship is exemplary and I take my hat off to you.I wish that my efforts were as good as yours are.

It is a bench clamp.there would be a hole drilled in the bench and a metal insert screwed into a recess made above the hole to give the long bar something to bite on.you can quickly adjust the clamp to height and when you screw down onto the workpiece it forces the bar away from the screw and tightens the whole thing.

If you have enough meat in the top of the mill to tap it make a bridge bracket with it screwed to the top of the mill above the draw bar drill the bracket and tap and use a threaded bar or bolt to force the draw bar down.

I am 70 and when at school it was so easy to smoke.The headmaster used to send me to the local shop for his fags .Us lads would pool our money and I would buy us 4 Domino fags in a paper sleve folded over and taped down with a domino on the front,dose anyone remember them.I stopped smoking at 21 when taking up swimming after a 6 year break I could not swim across the pool without struggling for breath.I stopped immediatly and have never touched one since.

I envy the ability of others who can use the drawing programmes,as I am not very computer literate.I do wing it for small items but make a drawing for larger things.I think things through for days to sort out the machining sequence and better ways of making an object before I start.

I agree Mark,My small set of taps and drills to match them for 8mm is 6.8 tapping drill.I have just finished tapping 8mm with no trouble .

I have been constructing an large fixed steady for my Myford.Today I have been milling the three slots in the 6" * 5/8"*1/2" steel ring the slots are to take the existing fingers from my standard fixed steady.They will only reach from 4" down to 2 1/2" ,this leaves a gap down to 1 5/8" so I am making long fingers with ball races attached then I will have all sizes up to 4".I have allready made the base which the ring is bolted,the rebate is radiused to take the ring.I will be able to make a larger ic engine now.

Thank you Jason. I couldn't face the journey and the M25 to see for myself ,you have made my day. The nearest MEX to me is the new Spalding show of three years.It is better every year,so to all who moan about the Brooklands venue give it a chance to improve yearly and thank goodness that there are people prepared to put on these exhibitions.

I can bring up the magazines to view but whilst viewing or turning the page they jam up.I can go back to the begining and then they don't open at all I am frustrated by this as I previously could access the magazines with no problems.Could you suggest where I am going wrong please.

I made a qctp for my myford and it would be possible to make it to fit your lathe.The tool holder can be machined to leave 2mm at it's base and use an8mm tool packed in the holder to centre height.See my album for images there are no dovetails to machine and it is faster to use than my dickson type toolpost .

I don't have the computer nohow to be ever be able to wright a programme for cnc.I know that it is a skill and surely any skill that will produce items in hours that takes me days, and better than I can do I applaud.It can only be good for the long term future of the hobby to encourage the younger generation to take over in their own way,we have to keep moving forewards.

I have a small horizontal mill and use 2mt drawbar collets and as others have sugested there is not room to use dills in the collets.

If Liddle or Aldi have them in their magnetic bars that one can screw to any convenient surface are great .I have my holders on one and I don't have a problem with the bar magnatizing the holders.The only downside is they don't always have them in stock ,I think they are about £5.

On a lighter note[no pun intended] whilst working at a college I was at the top of a ladder and my mate was holding it .this was on a stairwell landing.The safety officer on her way down the stairs said to my mate "where's your hat,get one"Off he goes and on her return she blew her top as he was wearing a chefs hat,this she reported to the management.Nothing was said.On his retirement from the college he was presented with a chefs hat,proving there is some humour in H&S.I go to his funeral on Friday and will always remember him and his pranks.

When I started work 55 years ago I am sure that the factory acts were posted on most sites that I worked on.These covered health and safety of workers and expected people to have and use common sense.with the decline of industries I noticed a new industry emerging health and safety. Courses were being run at the local college to train for this growing industry.Having employed people in the building industry I was well aware of my responsibility to my employees.An apprentice of mine was due an assesment of H&S the assesor arived to find him working in a domestic kitchen,I was questioned as to why he was not wearing a high vis jacket and helmet and why I did not have a notice displayed on the kitchen door saying that it was a building site and was a hazard.Constructive criticism would have been welcomed .Jobsworth sprang to mind.These are the sort of people that get H & S a bad name.

Hi,could the reason for the decline in deaths and injuries be anything to do with the decline in the main risk industries,ie building,mining,railways,engineering and fishing which through technology and various political decisions have been reduced significantly, so I don't think that one can base statistics of deaths and injuries without the reduced employment in the afformentioned industries being taken into account.

I bought a sx3 6 years ago from arc and have always had excellent after sales service.The machine is a good one for the price.

I have never owned a lahte/mill but I have built a 2" scale traction engine and many tools on my lathe with a vertical slide with good results.There have to be some comprimises with a budget dual machine.Take note of the previous posts and then decide.
