Thread: Morse tapers
27/03/2020 19:14:16

Could someone inform me of the height of gauge blocks needed for a 5"sine bar for a 2 morse and 4 morse taper, as I am not makeing much sense of the sine bar calculators on the net.I want to make an angle plate for both tapers so that I can set the bar on my taper turning attatchment.

Thread: A sight for sore eyes
21/03/2020 23:35:20

I started work 4/4/61 my 15th birthday and the first job I was given was to move cwt bags of cement.I thought my nuts were in my throat.Getting them of the floor was the worse part,I did get stronger and have carried bricks and blocks on my shoulder all my working life and my right shoulder is 1.5" lower than my left. When out of work I took a job as a malster and malt used to go to the Isle of Jura for whisky on a flat back truck ,The sacks were 18st and one man took them onto his back of the elevator walked forewards and turned and dropped the bags into position until the truck was full.A broken shear pin in the kiln spilt barley into the heat room below and we had to shovel it into 18st bags and carry it up six steps two men lifted it onto my back and I struggled up the steps with assistance from behind we only did this once ,it was to much.A labourer I had worked on a farm and said chick peas were in 21 st bags.I am all for the alteration of the lifting arrangements in the building trade and anyone who hankers after the old ways is barmy.

Thread: ER collet chuck/mill incompatibility?
07/03/2020 15:37:22

I have an SX3 and the silly hole below the quill are a pain to use .I drilled a hole in the quill and made a c spanner to fit,now I have no problem holding the quill while undoing the collet. It is also handy for turning the qhill when tapping by the use of the c spanner.I can't understand why Sieg didn't do this in the first place.

Thread: mystery file
15/02/2020 20:45:16

I have a flat blade of steel the lengthe of the file and it has a file handle, there are holes at both ends to which two flat dreadnought blades are attached with small bolts. One of the blades is flat and the other is half round which bolt on one at a time.I have used these blades on steel and if there is a lot to remove and shape they are great.

Dek, my daughter in law was a profesional musician and still cuts her reeds with a knife but this will be a more positive cut.even though it has already taken me many hours of milling,i,m enjoying the work of making the tool.

Ian,this toolis for trmming the reed to length and square. My daughter in law has play in orchestras world wide and plays five wind instruments but the tool is for the oboe, oboe damore and the chore anglais.I saw the cutters on the web and decided to make her one to my own design. This is turning out to be a complicated job and my advice would be to buy one .All the best to your grandaugher with her musical career.

Thread: silver solder rods
10/02/2020 12:36:24

On saturday I helped an elderly gentleman with his shopping bags as he was struggling. We got talking on the bus and it turned out he had been a tinsmith at the same factory for 51 years.I told him of my interest in home engineering and he asked if I siver soldered.when I carried his bags to his home he invited me in and gave me 50 2' by 2mm silver solder sticks. These will certainly see me out. Just goes to show what can result from a good turn.

I am making a reed cutter for an oboe. The blade I intend to make from gauge plate. My question, is there a right or wrong way to site the grain in respact to the cutting edge before I harden it.

Thread: Linked belt for Myford 7
07/02/2020 18:39:49

On my mill and on the old Myford I use Brammer fibre belts with the metal mushroom head .I tried the modern power twist belts and eventually they slipped .I think they might have stretched but I haven't had this problem with the Brammer belts. They are a pig to get joined.

Thread: A good toolpost drill design
20/01/2020 00:21:35

I made a toolpost drill form the quill of a cheap in my case free chinese drill press. The speed of the moter was 2000rpm so I thought it would make one and also do light grinding.I stripped the drill and cut down the column with the coller with three fixing holes for the base table column ,this I now use on the mill and the base I now use fastend to the drill columm to take a scissor jack for lifting my heavy drill table. The column that I had left was used up in projects and the motor is also used.So my point is a cheap drill press could be worth looking at.

Thread: Only for Myford lathes
13/01/2020 16:48:25

The models from 2000 on did have a screw in the backplate of the chucks and faceplate which screwed into a groove in the register on the mandrel making it possible to turn towards the tailstock without worrying that the chuck would unwind.

I started with a perris and moved on to a ML 10,in 85 was given ab type Drummond I then trded in the Myford for a S7 in 87 vintage 57 without gearbox but a very accurate machine which Myford reground in 2005 .I then bought a S7 plus from Myfords closing down sale 2011 it was 10 years old.I had it seviced by Pete and Darron Made a full length taper turning attachment ,a large fixed steady ,a toolpost grinder,a quick change tool post and various other things that make machining easier.Using the myfords to their capabilities, mine are excellent but if I was building a large model I would need a larger lathe.
