I have heard of marbles, round pebbles etc being dropped into the pain to bring the level to the top to stop the skin. no idea if it works. Regards Brian B |
Thread: Can you recommend a "medium-speed" epoxy adhesive? (e.g. "30 minute" or "60 minute") |
17/01/2022 12:16:46 |
Greetings John, epoxy is used quite a lot for small boat repairs, so if you have a boat chandlers near you, it would be a good place to look, they usually sell quick & slow setting. The brand I use is SPX I think, will check that tomorrow when I next visit the boat. All epoxy is temperature sensitive, and should not be used below 10 degree C, and the slower the setting time of the type you select, the stronger the bond. Regards Brian B |

Brian, sorry about that mistake, it's a long time since I have seen Keith to talk to, he lives in S Africa now. Thinking about it, I do recall, that he "tinned" the inside of the top casting with silver solder in case the casting was porous. Regards Brian B |

Greetings Brian, many years ago, in the 1980's I think, Keith Miller wrote an interesting article for ME called "Lions Crown" about this very issue. Worth getting a look at it. Also, all locos go better if superheated. Regards Brian B |

Well done Simon, looks great. It is a straight forward job to extend the controls for the regulator & reverser over the tender, which will save you back. Regards Brian B |
Thread: BOILER FEED WATER |
30/12/2021 12:31:54 |
Greetings Noel, and best wishes for the New Year. You are right, Norfolk Water is some of the worst in the country for boiler feed. It has a very high Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), and these dissolved materials are left behind in our boilers when we boil off the water. typically Norfolk has TDS levels of 250 to 350 ppm, whereas the Power stations aim for about 0.2 ppm. Rainwater is about the best thing to use, water softeners are not much use, since they could introduce chloride ions into copper boilers, nota good idea. Low concentration hot citric acid solution, is best for boiler cleaning, together with copious water washing afterwards. ME published a very interesting article, "Water Water, every where" a while ago, dealing with this item. Regards Brian B |

Thread: Redesigning a boiler from 5 to 7 1/4" |
19/12/2021 12:32:43 |
Greetings Steve, you are quite right to respect the views of your club's boiler inspector, and you would do well to consult him (her) about this redesign. You might also look at the K N Harris book, "model Boilers & Boilermaking", I think there is a design for a 6 inch diameter vertical boiler that might suit. Regards Brian B |
Thread: Wire |
17/12/2021 07:40:30 |
Greetings Bernard, hope you are well, and will enjoy your Christmas Celebrations. Stainless wire used in boats is of two types, one as you described, for running rigging, around pulleys and fittings, and another type, as picture above for standing, static uses, main shrouds, fore & backstays. Regards, Brian |
16/12/2021 16:27:43 |
Greetings Derek, wire of that type could br used on the standing rigging of a sailing dinghy. regards Brian B |

Norm, the big flat stretcher was an after thought, added to the later batches of 5 inch Britannia kits, and offered to the 71/4 builders. Regards Brian B |
16/12/2021 07:43:25 |
Greetings Rob, could you check what metal has been used for the large drag box at the rear of you loco, Modelworks tended to use Aluminium for this, and other parts, certainly in 71/4 inch gauge. regards Brian B |
15/12/2021 16:28:13 |
Hi Rob, I might be wrong, but I think you have bought an ex Winson or Modelworks kit built Britannia. the look and style of certain fittings leads me to believe this. A good start, because after the bits you have, every thing went wrong for these kits. Regards BB |
Thread: Drilling and filling of the Dental kind. |

Also, I believe the training period for new dentists is 6 to 7 years, with low income, and they are required to take refresher courses from time to time. Dentists also have, I understand, the highest suicide rate of all occupations. regards BB
