Thread: Vita brevis
15/09/2022 14:32:56

Like Samsaranda I am on routine colonoscopy, 2 years ago the yield was 15 polyps over 2 sessions, last year it was 2 but 1 was bad (first ever), successfully removed.

I await this years procedure at the age of 86.

Thread: Another Smart Meter thread.

Vic,

"Using saucepans on the gas ......as gas is more expensive than electricity"

Mine is 1/4 of the price per Kwh, what price is yours?

Thread: Update Smart Meter
23/08/2022 10:56:04

Even with Ontario's added costs it is still cheap cf UK. Perhaps we should be charged the cost of generation + a margin, afterall the windfarms have not really seen any added costs yet. Ditch the international references where appropriate and charge genuine UK costs of generation.

The interconnectors will of course be different rates. I note that EDF customers in France pay a lot less than EDF customers in UK, even though some EDF power comes across the interconnector.

Smart Meters can be used at 30 minute intervals for complete variiable pricing against time and apparently to disconnect, so it seems.

Here we go!!

National Grid ESO is making a proposal that if consumers reduced the demand during 17.00 - 20.00 the price could be such that coniderable savings could be made.

Details to be announced in next 14 days.

First step to having variable pricing using the so called Smart Meters as discussed in previous threads and as is practiced in Ontario Canada already.

Thread: MEW 319 - Roofing A Shed??????
18/08/2022 17:50:29

I have ALL issues since No 1 and must agree that this is the worst ever.

Pity the Science Museum ( was once asked to leave as they wanted to close!) Photos had not been Photo shopped to impove viewability.

Thread: Zinc-Rich Primer
13/08/2022 19:32:10

Zylene is almost certain to be the aromatic hydrocarbon used. Look up the Safety Data Sheet for Galvafroid, 30% aromatic in the correct R group numbering. Just difficult to stir the semi hardened paint!!

Thread: How Much is this Costing Me?
07/08/2022 19:06:28

You do not need a so called Smart meter to tell you to switch something off to save money. If you only turn on what you really need, that saves money.

Thread: Will the lights stay on this winter?
28/07/2022 12:05:24

I often wonder when considering how puny our global warming contribution actually is compared with USA+China+India, what next?.

Until those countries really step up to the mark, are we just bankrupting ourselves for the moral highground?

Thread: Hearing aid batteries
20/07/2022 11:50:20

In the 60's I was testing line scanners which included high speed rotating mirrors. Really screaming noise. Ear plugs and Ear defender clamshells were needed. As I can still hear without aids (at 86) it obviously worked to protect the inner ear workings.

Thread: What's Is The Angle
09/07/2022 15:46:32

The drawing clearly shows 30 degrees at point of contact with the 1/8" hole..

From your question it appears the casting may not a good one or you have to fettle it to give a equal thickness foot?

Ian,

The sound of a single Merlin is great when you are sitting just behind it!

Thread: Powering a Suds pump?
07/06/2022 08:37:05

Is the lathe running on a VFD? The added load of the suds pump would probably not be noticed by a VFD and all would be normal, except if you are running at a low speed. Suck it and see.

Thread: Layout tool
03/06/2022 10:20:01

Lee Valley Tools operate in Ottawa, Ontario, but they cannot send one of these to Quebec,(next door Province).

'improvements patented in Europe Dec 1885'. in France perhaps? Hence the strange Quebecois position.

Thread: Which stand for Myford ml7
30/05/2022 15:30:03

It really needs something more rigid then "just a chest of drawers"

When you adjust the mounting bolts to correctly set up the lathe bed in accordance with the Myford ML7 Manual, there will likely be some twisting force that a chest of drawers will not resist. That said, when I first had a ML7( 68 years ago) it just sat on a bench and did what I needed at the time.

Although now unused (I have oher lathes) it sits mounted on a substantial bench, the top of which disguises the fact that underneath there is a large piece of channel girder!

Thread: Hello - Uni or apprenticeship

Like Frances IOM I am an IET Member (retired), being an electrical I have worked in electronics, aviation, computer, broadcasting and medical companies, a wide choice of opportunities. The same could well apply with the other major Engineering Institutions.

Good advice as given, start with the vatious professional institutions and then work your way to what companies in those fields can offer for you to start.
