Thread: Thread dial indicator. |

Generally no is the answer. It depends on the pitch of the leadscrew and the thread being cut. For instance, with an 8tpi screw, any thread can be picked up if it is a multiple of 8, ie 16, 32 tpi etc. Cutting a metric thread on an imperial lathe do not disengage but reverse back and then forward to take up the backlash. |
Thread: Lathe Drive Motors, 1ph or 3ph? |

Steve, Car crankshafts are usually pressure lubricated. |

Myford-Paul, I personally would not run the ML7s plain bearings at anything like that top speed of 6000RPM !! |

Do not forget to lightly countersink the plate around the rivet stem to allow a ring of SS to form. |
Thread: Lathe Drive Motors, 1ph or 3ph? |

All my in use machines are 3 phase run through inverters. 3 were originally 3 phase however my Myford S7 was changed from single phase. Better? Yes, for a start there is no need to have a resilient mount motor.; Why was it resilient mounted when single phase,? Simple, single phase motors are at best a jerky drive machine so Myford chose to smooth the drive vibration by resilient mounting the motor. The belt does not seem to have any significant effect on the smoothness of drive, but the 3 phase motor does. On top of that you have the conveniences of inverter drive. Incidently the res mount motor on my original (now retired) ML7 had plain sleeve bearings, ball bearings would have been better but cost more! |
Thread: Ball Nose Mill Cutter, did I break it? |

Hansrudolf, I am aware of the ER attributes and that it was invented in CH by rego-fix, but we all cannot afford such expensive precision items. |
28/04/2010 16:07:10 |
John, Clarksons have only have 4 "basic" collets per imperial and 4 collets for metric unless you get a larger Clarkson. I would not use an ER on a milling cutter as they can pull out under use. The Clarkson principle stops all of that. |

If what you want to tap has a flat surface around the hole, use a steel block, drill block to clear the tap stem, hold the block tight to the face by hand and tap away. Portable tappinf stand, prevent breaking the tap by leaning it over. I frequently tap M2 without needing to look at what I am doing, just keep clearing the tap or as Macmarch says above use spiral point for throughholes and spiral flute for bland ones, works a treat. I too have old LAL taps and dies which I bought in the 50s and I still use them, going off a bit now, so great care needed. Never cut without fluid (except perhaps brass). |
Thread: How to sharpen centre drills? |
28/04/2010 08:31:50 |
I usually find that by the time the tip needs a regrind the main cone angle also needs attention, so its just a spare bit of HSS now and all I need is a new one. Life is much too short to regrind centre drills. |

At £3.50 I doubt it. Try Tracy Tools or Kirjeng. |

I have my computer set for no pop up ads and ONLY get ONE "Digital" when I read my FIRST topic, thereafter no problems. Looks like a set up problem to me. |

I have only one RDG copy that fitted properly, all the rest went back. Myford ones are UK made, as for supporting Myford John, it is either support them or loose them. This means that the Spares support we expect from them would also go. |

We have all seen products "designed" in this way, but when made, their functionality is seriously impaired by the lack of engineering design and knowledge, ie strength and practicality. Etc. |
