Thread: Constrained Pendulum and Earth Rotation
04/02/2017 12:28:55

Yes. But rather the earth rotates underneath it... Anyway, surely, a clock pendulum is constrained in that it can only swing in one plane, unlike the Foucault. Any tendency to twist from that plane is resisted by its construction and suspension. Yes?

John S, yes, I've seen this in truck racing. On one occasion it ripped off the rear axle which cartwheeled over the track with the propshaft flailing.

Revelation! I was wondering about this, even mentioned it in an upcoming Club News, ie, could you use a coupling rod only on one side of a 0-4-0 or 0-6-0? I was going to try it on my new loco and see. I was thinking to avoid quartering. Now I don't need to worry, if 'tis to be done, 'twere well 'tis done quickly. Thanks guys!

As for Morse keys, I'm working on that too, but empirically, not on a computer. If you use a spring so, you should perhaps be thinking of pendulums (Pendula?) and oscillators, not springs, as you need to find the point of resonance. This will help to sustain the vibrating item.

Thread: Air suply

I was told a fish tank pump would do it, it doesn't. I bought a dual feed pump, it still doesn't. An electrical tyre inflator doesn't, either. An old fridge compressor does. I used one for some years. My Clarke compressor is noisy, so I located it as far away as possible, and piped the air to the show bench to run my, now 4, models. A model engine globe valve restricts the supply, in order to feed the models and run them at slow speed.

Yes, Ian. Mind you, would you pay 30 quid plus for a tool chest that only cost 100 new, or a similar amount for a handful of cheap multimeters? I did fancy a leather, executive swivel chair for the mancave as befits a Club News Editor of my stature, but there isn't room in there to swing cat!

Thread: What web browser
24/01/2017 08:46:17

After having endless problems with XP, corrupting files, esp. photographs, I moved completely over to Ubuntu (Linux) which uses Firefox, but retaining Gmail for correspondence. It works beautifully! Never had a problem in about 5 years of use. The Ubuntu package is free, and contains spreadsheets, word processing, etc, plus numerous other software to be downloaded (LMMS for a MIDI synthesiser, for instance) I am not a computer geek, it's as easy to obtain as Windows, very similar in appearance & use, and the various programs are Windows compatible, ie can read and be read by.

JA, I'm working on that just now. The Apple connector is waterproof (Why?) and very expensive. I am getting a videocamera to interface with a PC, laptop, domestic tv, my smartphone and the internet. So far so good. I am so glad that standardised connections have been agreed., or adapters available to connect one to t'other.

My Android smartphone has a camera icon. When selected, a switch allows stills or video, then a single press on the shutter icon sets it off.

Huh! (Old Curmudgeon mode 'ON'...)

I can't stand listening to someone else's choice of music. Radio 4/World Service is therefore the only one I use. Good collection of CDs though!

However, I like to work in silence. The cacophony in my head is quite enough to deal with...

Haha!

You got me! Out of sight of the camera to the right. photo That's why I tidied up! Behind the camera is the electronics construction and test bench, then the radio station and opposite the camera, behind the computer, is the machinery section. No I'm not showing it! Because, 1) I haven't tidied that up yet, and 2) there are unfinished projects and forthcoming articles in preparation.

John,

Not really headachey, Particles, which travel at the speed of light, emitted by radioactive materials underwater, are slowed by the Moderator (Water) The speed of light in water is lower, so according to Newtonian physics the absorbed energy is emitted as blue light.

Thread: What Did You Do Today (2017)

For the past two days I have been tidying up the workshop/radio station/editorial desk/reference library after a burst of activity over the holidays. My floor is still there (I recognise the colour) and my books are all tidied neatly away, some thrown out. (Sob!) I found my other tap wrench, my solar powered lighting is back on, and brighter, my cheap electronic voltmeter worked again, then failed, so that needs attention, and I have at least 3 square feet of workbench I can practically (as against theoretically) use. I have been motorising my G1 loco, and written two electronics articles in the last month, and submitted them for publication, as well as Club News. I saved several wall warts, and chucked a tangled mess of odd wires.

Photos are available from 'Scoop' Theasby Enterprises, Sheffield Home for the Terminally Bewildered, Thaxted, Norfolk. Proceeds to Geoff's Aged Volvo Fund.

Deborah is a happy bunny.
