Thread: Deep Cycle 12V Batteries
03/07/2017 13:27:03

''Tis not ideal to connect lead acid batts in parallel, if one is a bit down you could get large currents between the two if alternator diodes go leaky yes the batt can dis charge thro it. On my sons metro the diodes burnt out causing fire sparks and smoke under bonnet. Reduced the alternator to a pile of scap .so far modern cars don't have these probs.

The offer only lasted a couple of months but I passed the car to my son who in turn passed it to his uncle. Car and batt did another five years. Not bad at all.

Some years ago Halfords were selling car batteries with a life time guarantee , bought one for my Vauxhall after six years it was shot. Took it back to Halfords and they gave me a new one. Wow never seen an offer like that again.

This is an Alan west contactor, the plastic pots were oil filled dash pots intended to slug the overload trips on the motor starting surge.

Even if it has three poles you can use it on single phase by wiring two in series.

Dad had one on his ml7 many moons ago worked ok but tended to buzz a bit.

Also the thin oil tended to leak out over time.

Probably not so important with modern motors tthat can withstand overloads better than oldies.

When I left school in 1961 was very lucky to get an electronic apprenticeship with De Havilland they took on at least a hundred apprentices every year in many disciplines. The part I worked for was producing heat seeking missiles to shoot down Russian bombers in the event of nuclear war. We all expected to die in a nuclear war in those days. The first six months we got full time training in bench fitting sheet metal work machine tools and technical drawing and even a bit of oxy acetaline welding. Training that was to set me up for the rest of my life

We used to get one day a week at college and the rest in various sections working on electronics

I did hear from senior people that the DH 110 that John Derry flew was a development hack hundreds of hours beyond its design life. To give the crowds a thrill he pushed it too hard it suffered structual failure with tragic results

The resources at DH and the skill of their work force were exceptional in every way, now sadly all gone I believe the airfield is now a housing estate.

Best days of my life.

Thread: iPad Battery is failing ...
21/05/2016 11:05:52

Think I will pass on this job have fixed a lot of dodgy electronics over the years but this sounds a step too far.

Apple hope you will buy new .

Worst of all of course is washing machines have this dream of them being taken out in a nuclear strike along with the European Parliament.

Right that is enough wittering for now.

If your rods are different diameters my theory is wrong. Any. Chance of pics of the ends of the rods .

You can use it hooked up to a USB pSU even with a dud batt, I have a IPAD and IPhone son gave me with tired batts

Can use the iPhone fed from power bank when mobile but not very convienant .

Despite a life time of electronics cannot see how to open them without damage.

These sound like extension rods for internal micrometers . I have a set of very old starrett mics which have a load of rods they clamp into a collet on the basic mic . The ones I have go up to 15 inches bit OTT for ME.

Thought they would be good with bed clamp for end stops on the ML7. When I get round to it.

If you look at Starrett on google there details of the modern version, the only diff is insulated grip to stop hand heat causing expansion.

When I get round to it story of my life.

Thread: What steel for cylinder head stud
14/04/2016 07:49:04

Had an MGB a long time ago rust and mech failures ment I spent more time fixing it than driving.

I am sure the threads were UNC and UNF not Whitworth.

One thing with the studs was that heat and stress could cause a raised bit around the studs in the block , I know cast iron is not supposed to stretch but it did happen.

Dealers had a tubular running down cutter that fitted over studs to remove the bulge other wise the head would bottom on before the head gasket was fully compressed.

An easy way in the home workshop is a big countersink on the lower surface of the head stud holes.

This avoids metal to metal contact. There is not a great amount of iron around the tapped stud holes so helicoil needs to be done by an expert. I had the thermostat fail and boiled up the engine cracked the head common problem on MGB cost me a new head

Best of luck with your rebuild.

Thread: Stuart Swan Air Pumps
13/04/2016 20:55:18

By the way these pumps have great suction a friend turned up saying he could only get a gallon in his tank.

We found the vent pipe was blocked and the pump had sucked a vacuum that caused atmospheric pressure to collapse his tank.

We tried blowing it out with compressed air at 150 psi but no go, cost him a new tank.

Ho Hum

13/04/2016 20:29:09

I do have a stuart cat with pics of this engine, did not realise the air pumps were in fact petrol pumps but did think they looked familiar.

They were made by AC Delco if you google AC petrol pumps it should bring web sites such as Cornwall Austin 7 restorers with cut away diagrams as to how they work.

Also Rimmer Bros who do overhaul kits. They were fitted to many cars espec ially Ford Cortinas Capris Escorts (rear wheel drive).

You should be able to pick up a pair at an Autojumble overhaul is simple with the kit just diaphgam and valves.

If you can build a Swan no problem.

You may need to mod the rocker arm that drives them but should be no problem. On cars it was driven by an ecentric on the cam shaft.

Good luck JK

If the batt was new last August take it back and claim a new one under guarantee.

Thread: Electric motor help needed
07/03/2016 08:10:26

Split phase motors do not have a starting cap the phase shift is provided by the higher resistance of the start winding.

Starting torque is a lot less than cap start motors so not suitable for stuff like air compressors.

The centrifigle switch may well be stuck or the thermal switch has got weak with old age don,t poke around with a test meter unless you know what you are doing better to buy a new motor than electrocute your self.

Sorry about dud spalling blame Apple predictive text

Got some opal flexible glass sheet from r n r aluminium good buy should be flexy damn iPad reductive text. Or is it plexy .

Thought £4.50 for a pint of beer in the bar was ott, but the nice lady at noggin metals gave me £5 discount

Must get out to the workshop and get on with my unfinished projects ho hum
