Thread: Anyone bought a new Myford

...

No mini lathes lathes are featured on the Lathes.co.uk website, although vastly more of them have been sold than most or possibly all of the machines listed there.

...

There is a very long list of "other makes" on that website which Tony Griffiths does not cover in detail; Sieg (however spelled) does not seem to be on it.

I agree that there is a case for a representative minilathe to be included and I expect TG would be happy to do so if you write and illustrate the entry.

Thread: Mk1 Super 7 - What colours ?
28/11/2018 10:56:47

Nottingham Myford used to turn up at shows with Sevens in a variety of non-standard colours.

When I repainted my grey 1960s Super Seven I opted for the much more tasteful green - mutton dressed up as lamb!

There is an interesting reference to the Vikings' use of the sun compass and other navigational aids in this BBC item:

I think somebody suggested a dummy (!) thread where we could experiment rather than inflict our mistakes on other members.

You'll be wanting this thread then.

That was indeed the one I had in mind.

I have sent you a PM.

Neil Wyatt:

Thank you for exposing this old print to the light of day! Sun compasses and sun dials would seem to be an excellent school project.

It looks as though I should have clicked the Link icon rather than the Image one; I know I am not the only member who struggles with this software and would gladly exchange the Smiley icon for a Help button. It's awkward to have to go to the website FAQs in mid-edit.

Thank you. A case of buffer overflow, perhaps?

What happened to the image whose URL I pasted in?

Brilliant, many thanks. Still need a UK supplier for the wick and felt.

If you are cutting your own felts, I can supply the material (thick ex-papermaking felt).

Edited By ega on 25/11/2018 12:01:42

That would be great, how much

Just PM me your address and say what size you want and I'll post - no charge, but consider "paying forward".

I think the pliers are a cobbler's tool.

I agree they are called Lasting Pliers, don't know how they are used. Mike. How they are used Here

Good find! I looked in vain in Salaman's Dictionary.

Here's inspiration for you, Nick **LINK**

https://www.model-engineer.co.uk/sites/7/documents/drumm-4-man.pdf

Superb! Why don't manufacturers describe their products like that today?

24/11/2018 00:01:22

I seem to recall that there were third party back gear conversions in the round bed's heyday. I suppose that Clive Foster's point about the capabilities of the drive belt may still apply, but back gear would be more in keeping than a VFD.

Thanks for the advice - I found it helpful to use a suitably small tap wrench.

For an (American) size 0 taper pin, small end diameter 0.156", I don't bother step drilling. You aren't removing much metal with the reamer in that size.

Edited By Mark Rand on 22/11/2018 17:21:38

I think you mean large end.

This was where I found out, it's actually a publication by Jacobs.

www.cooperhandtools.com.au/PDFs/Jacobs%20Chucks%20Technical-Information.pdf

Very few people seem to be aware of this!

Neil

Thank you - that was exactly what I wanted to see. I was unaware of these until recently and am not sure why it was necessary to add to the old-style Jacobs tapers. Presumably, however, I can now finish a new style taper with the appropriate MT reamer.

Thread: taper pins

John Purdy:

Many thanks.

My reamer has straight flutes and, as I suggested in another thread, I was concerned about the possibility of breaking it, particularly as the load on the flutes must increase as the cut progresses. In the event, I compromised by measuring the diameter of the pin at half way and drilling accordingly (the actual depth of my taper is only 15/16".

Lots of stuff on internet generally eg Yahoo 6x4 group.

The CAHW.exe MEW index would probably help, too. eg MEW 50, page 51
