Thread: Extracting a dowel pin from a blind hole

Count your losses and drill a pair of holes for a new pin?

Or cut your blessings?

I cannot understand why anyone would find the need to screw cut BA threads as a good set of taps and dies together with a tailstock die holder will do a very good and accurate job. In almost 60 years of model (and full size ) engineering I have never known anyone screw cut a BA thread.

Eric

I agree. I use dies for anything smaller than M6/0BA but die cut threads can be wobbly so the information is out there for anybody needing it.

Rod

I wouldn't argue with this but wonder why the standard screw thread gauge includes the BA form.

Small dies are expensive and if it were practicable screwcutting the corresponding threads would be attractive for the occasional job.

Ady1:

I rode into your great city in a downpour at the end of the Scottish C2C cycle route; the route is partly off road and, no doubt, more enjoyable when it is dry! The sun came out in subsequent days and it was Festival time.

Please don't give up your real bike!

Thread: Vfd

I have a TECO VFD which failed after some time in service; I returned it to the supplier who "replaced the fuse".

I s there a consensus for leaving VFDs powered on?

Thread: Myford Super 7 toolpost stud.

I don't think you need to remove the grubscrews which are for the ratchet for the Myford fourway toolpost. Just press the stud out.

Roderick Jenkins:

Thanks for the comparison; I regularly consult your stud gear table.

That's great Thor - I'll buy a 33T from RDG.

Does anyone know where I can get the 34T?

Mike

Widely advertised on eBay.

Brian Wood's book Gearing of Lathes for Screwcutting is a good read.

One big mistake i made was to set my cross slide over to 30 degrees and the thread was very odd. It took a while to work out that i needed to set it to 60 degrees on my lathe. Seems obvious now but it didn't at the time.

As you realized, the offset is to the axis of the cross slide. The authorities recommend setting a degree or so less with a single point tool so that the trailing flank takes a fine shaving.

All very interesting.

Am I right in thinking that these fillers are also accelerators? I thought bicarb was and that this was its main use (apart from domestic uses).

86.25 divisions sounds odd!

Agreed. Here is the Lavis advert:

No doubt someone can "do the maths"!

Edit: Malcolm Jones, might you post the instructions?

It's not possible to put photos up from my phone, and boy I have tried!

Sorry if my comment touched a sore spot!

My impression is that many members access and post from mobiles so this seems a rather basic problem which deserves some attention.

The Lavis dial was divided into 86 and 1/4 divisions so I don't think it's this dial.

You can also use "micro balloons" used for thickening epoxy resin into a paste.

aka ballotini? The product I am thinking of is also used to ensure a micro gap between mating faces.

Some at least of the answers to your questions are to be found in Martin Cleeve's "Screwcutting in the Lathe" (no 3 in the Workshop Practice Series).

You don't say what your job is but I think most amateurs aim to get the screw to fit the nut rather than to produce a theoretically correct thread form; by "fit" I mean on the flanks of the thread - as long as the crests and roots clear each other their precise dimension and form are less important.

It would also be helpful to know something about your lathe and tooling: single point threading techniques are different from those applicable to insert tooling.

If you are a beginner then some practice on scrap before embarking on the real thing is a good idea.

Are we talking about the modern keyless chucks which are tightened until they click? The one fitted to my Festool cordless drill is of this type and I have never experienced the OP's problem.

I seem to remember that there was an issue about letters from Newport being postmarked "The home of the Mole wrench".
