Thread: Grinding a step drill |

This is from Ian Bradley's The Grinding Machine: |

The Granlund counterbore system employs separate pilots which are available in a range of sizes and, if necessary, are easily shop-made; very expensive new but can be had at used prices. |

Thanks, Bazyle - very informative and I bet that "not many people know that"! |

John Haine: You are a mine of information! I gather that MEMS are "micro electro mechanical systems" so I assume that there is something in them that moves. |

Zeus: My "Metric Revision" from 1995 gives the BSF data as well as some metric. What, I wonder, did they substitute for BSF? No doubt BSW and others went out as well. |

What is the working principle of these, presumably solid state, devices? |

Occasional spark testers might find it helpful to have known samples to hand by the bench grinder for comparison. |

Tubal Cain's ME's Handbook is helpful on this. |

You could also use Oilon (oil-filled nylon) which is self-lubricating. |

And, of course, the Dore (not Dore-Westbury) boring and facing head had a round-with-flat slide. |

ega I used Delrin for the pads because I had some. The choice is unlikely to be critical for occasional use. The ali I used is only about 0.090 thick again because I had some and I wasn't planning mamoth cuts. In any case loads are largely up in which direction quite a lot of material is in direct tension leading to small deflections if used gently. Thank you - Delrin sounds like a good choice. |

ChrisLH: What plastic did you use? I suppose oil-filled nylon might be a good choice. |

A delightful little car! I suppose that shifting the handbrake outboard reduces the potential for interference with the passenger's knee? |
Thread: Using a Morse taper reamer - advice please |
27/01/2023 17:03:22 |
I would aim to bore this taper, with TTA if one is a available, but it can be done with the topslide set round. A sound taper should make the tang slot, etc unnecessary. An impressive project - good luck! Edited By ega on 27/01/2023 17:04:32 |

Tom's super 7 went for a very low price as did his VMC vert mill.
I think he also had a Senior vertical mill. David Urwick's own version of his superb Impetus lathe was bought by an enthusiast who wrote about it, where, unfortunately, I do not recall. |

Nice work. The quick action lever on the quadrant clamp has upgraded your Super 7 to match the Drummond M-Type! And Martin Cleeve's ML7! |

Vincent, I will be putting my superb Boxford ME 10 for sale in the very near future. The actual lathe can be seen on Tony's lathes.co.uk It is the one with the very rare clutch and makers stand. It will come with a host of extras. A good quality British lathe that will not last a life time. Did you mean that? I suppose it depends on the length of a life! |

Reviving this thread to show a small, self-explanatory refinement: I think I first saw the idea of storing change gears inside the gear cover in a post by John Stevenson. Mine sit on small nylon "buttons" retained by 2BA csk screws. The only tool I now need to swap gears is a fag paper to set the clearance of the teeth (I plan to add somewhere here an extract from Roderick Jenkins' table of gear and gearbox settings for the 33 and 34T gears which are the ones I use most often). |

Dave Wootton: Thanks for those memories of that outstanding engineer. I think Thorcraft sold the swing clear toolpost, another of MC's devices aimed at speeding up production. |
