EGA, Coast Hopper to be precise ! Are you on its route ? Noel. Sadly, no - just a lover of the big sky county. |

In North Norfolk, UK, the Hopper is the bus service that runs along the coast. |

The width of the wheels will be governed by the blade width but there is a potential complication: the crown will normally cause the band to ride in the middle of the tire but there is a school of thought which holds that the teeth should project. My vintage 6" x 4" bandsaw wheels have a flange at the back and the blade rides directly on the flat cast iron wheels. |

Poolewood used to do wood lathes like that, think they have stopped doing them that way now That is the one I had in mind; I wonder why the idea never caught on. The lathe allowed a bowl to "embrace" the spindle nose end of the motor. |

Whilst we are fantasising how about integrating the motor and spindle. Make the spindle the shaft of the motor. Yes loads of issues etc... but... It would at least eliminate the current motor-belt-pully noise-vibration-irritation complex. Regards. Frank C. I think that a woodworking lathe has been made this way. |

It reminds me a bit of the endless discussions in cycling magazines about why there is a left-hand thread on the left-hand pedal (I think I've remembered it the correct way round) with all sorts of theories proposed, contradicted, refuted and argued over. The real answer is that our forebears found that if they used a right-hand thread, the pedal would unscrew itself and fall off. And for the same reason you need a long spanner to remove either pedal which will have self-tightened in use. |

If you make your own bandsaw wheels it may be important to balance them. I use the Evolution Rage saw blade for thin metals in both my portable circular and radial arm saws; in either case, the saw is mechanically guided but advanced, with great care, by hand; this is made possible by the chip-limiting form of the teeth. |

ChatGPT seems like a potentially useful tool. I looked in vain on Wikipedia for the Cheltenham classification for library books but ChatGPT came up with an informative. albeit bland, "lecturette". |

As I said, the "rough edge" meaning is old. OED gives various examples of its use accessed free, in my case, via my membership of the local library - worth a look if you can do the same or have your own subscription. |

@ Richard Millington: Have you ever regretted the choice or felt that a cast iron base would have made any real difference? The front bar, presumably of steel, slides in the base so that aluminium may not be ideal. |
