G'Day John, Why not do as the professionals and fit a proper electric suds pump and tank. The chinese ones are not expensive and give good service. Regards Dave Tointon |

Thread: Drill press advice? |
19/03/2012 04:20:44 |
While there are some very good Chinese machines about, I would very much agree with the majority above and buy an English or better still an Australian drill! They are relatively simple machines and with a lick of paint and a bit of fettling you will end up with a far superior machine that looks like new Regards Dave Tointon

Thread: Mig Welder Caught Fire |
04/03/2012 10:12:50 |
Thanks to all for the replies. Like a lot of chinese stuff its a design fault or shortcut, in that the brass bolt carries the full welding current and gets hot, plastic sleeve melts, bolt shorts on bulkhead, plastic insulation catches fire!!! Its fixed now. Regards Dave Tointon

Thank You Gentlemen, many good solutions there. I found a bit of nylon kicking around so will turn something up out of that but will keep an eye out for something ceramic. Thank you for the offer John but I am in Queensland, Beautiful one day, perfect the next.

Perhaps that should be NOT inflammable Sorry. |
08/02/2012 06:51:26 |
G'Day All,
I was happily welding away with my chinese mig welder when it stopped working and nasty black smoke billowed out of the case. Fortunately I always have an electrical fire extinguisher close by and a quick squirt put it out. The cause of the problem : where one of the output leads emerge through a steel bulkhead via an insulated brass bolt has overheated and the insulation material has caught fire! The melted remains appears to be some sort of plastic, my question is What sort of material should I use to make a new one ? Needs to be electrically safe and hopefully inflammable. some sort of fibre stuff comes to mind.
Thank you for your advice,
Regards

Thread: Drill Sharpening Jigs - Advice please. |
24/08/2011 06:55:56 |
G'Day John,
The best drill sharpener I have come across is the simple hand and eye offhand grinder technique. It takes no time to set up, is cheap and almost always results in a good job. It merely takes a bit of practice to perfect the sort of swooping motion of the right hand and one can see immediately if it is right simply by looking at the drill.

G'Day James,
I have something similar from an Australian supplier but they all come from the same factory in China with different paint jobs. I am more than happy with my machine !!! It does everything I ask of it and more. I have cut full size railway line to use as an anvil and small jobs with an attachment similar to the one in the latest MEW. Being Chinese it required a good strip and clean and reassembly. I find that the Chinese do a great job at castings and machining same but their assembly leaves much to be desired. It can be turned into a very usable and quite accurate machine and they're cheap. Highly recommended. !!!!!!!!

Thread: Hammerte paint |
27/07/2011 00:16:12 |
I agree with Martin. The only way I am able to get a good hammered finish is to slap it on thickly with a brush. Spraying doesn't seem to allow the mottled finish to appear.

Thread: Elliot 10M Shaper. |
27/07/2011 00:01:52 |
G'Day Roger,
I've been trying to buy an Elliot shaper here in Australia for years but haven't been able to find one. I imagine that they are rather more plentiful in England. If I could get one for 400 quid I'd snap it up.

I'd be inclined to increase the feed rate until the swarf chips into little blue pieces. much safer to clean up and a few of those down your boot will ruin a pair of socks very efficiently and give you a nasty burn as well!!!

G'Day Coalburner,
The normal type of thing, giving say a casting a whack in the 4 jaw chuck to set it up, loosen a camlock chuck on the lathe. The face needs to be soft enough not to mark mild steel but robust enough to tolerate some abuse.
