Thread: Has the quality of HSS changed over the years? |
10/03/2017 17:04:24 |
As somebody mentioned earlier, you get what you pay for... Some years ago I bought a pack of assorted plastic wall plugs from somewhere like a market stall or pound shop. It came with a set of half a dozen masonry drills. Seemed like a bargain. I came to use the 3mm drill and was amazed at how fast the drill chuck advanced towards the brick. I thought I had gone in about an inch and a quarter, only to find that the drill had become over an inch shorter! How I laughed!

That's the best offer I've had so far! |
03/03/2017 17:59:18 |
I have this VM30 on Ebay at the moment. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Boxford-VM30-Milling-machine-/222427308384?hash=item33c9b36160:g:80wAAOSwXYtYuGyP I had intended to offer it here first but Ebay offered me a "sell anything for a fiver" deal so I had to go for it. This is a nice machine. Any inspection welcome. |

Thread: Andover Club's annual Rob Roy Day May 28th 2017 |
09/01/2017 16:11:47 |
The title says it all! Last year's event saw six Rob Roys in steam. This year with the raised track extended through the new tunnel there's room for many more! Contact me on 01980 846815 for more details. Rex Edited By JasonB on 09/01/2017 16:26:11 |
Thread: Publicising Events |
09/01/2017 15:42:15 |
Further to the above, a click on the "Events" button reveals just one entry, dated last October. As the pdf link only brings up one page, dating back more than 6 months, it would appear that this part of the forum has been abandoned. Can anyone help to point me to where else such events can be publicised? It is already on the Model Engineering Clearing House forum. |

Thanks JasonB and Neil. I emailed Diane a report on last year's Rob Roy day on December 12th. Haven't heard from her though. It didn't seem necessary to send her the same info again. I didn't know that the link would take me back to her email. |

I want to publicise/promote the annual Rob Roy day at the Andover club which will be held on May 28th this year. (I know, I've just done it!). I thought I would add it to the "events" section of this forum, so I clicked on "Events". (no flies on me!) It said... Events can be submitted to the Website Editor When I clicked on the underlined bit it started to set me up with an Outlook 2016 email account. I don't want to do this, I just want to send an email to whoever from my exiting email account to say that the Andover club will be hosting their annual Rob Roy day on May 28th 2017, on their newly extended raised track. (There, I've done it again!) So then I noticed this.... The current Events Diary can be found here in pdf format. I eagerly clicked on the underlined word here and sure enough up came the events pages in pdf format, page 1 of 1, showing April and May, but no indication of what year. It does appear to come from issue no 4533 though. As issue no. 4551 has recently landed on my door mat this would seem a bit useless! Is it me? I just want to let people know that the Andover club will be having their annual Rob Roy day on May 28th 2017, on their newly extended raised track, through the new tunnel! Why is it so hard? Thread: Rob Roy boiler advice requested |
08/01/2017 18:12:21 |
I built mine to the drawings but silver soldered the bush instead of screwing it. Much better! Other tips.... Fit the hand pump in the other side tank. There's more room and you don't end up reaching across the safety valves if pumping from the driving trolley. Not so important if you are left handed though! Feed your steam pipes into the front end of the valve chests rather than the very cramped tee arrangement through the covers. This also makes valve setting and adjusment easier as you don't have to remove the steam pipes to get the coveres off! Hope this helps! Also, see the Andover club website for details of their annual Rob Roy Day, May 28th this year!

The final picture appears to be a different boiler. It has an additinal fitting opposite the top gauge glass fitting and the solder flow is different around the stays. |

Mine has gaskets. Maybe the original builder planned to fit them once the valve setting was complete. |

There was a similar system on "Dragon's Den" a few years ago but they pooh-poohed it!In similar vein, the late Bob Symes designed a system whereby when you were sat in state, a fan drew air out of the pan to control the odour. Presumably it had some sensor arrangement so it new when you were enthroned, and vented outside, but it might have been down the waste pipe after the U bend. If the latter it would need some kind of valve to keep the stink back when the fan wasn't running. Never seen this commercialised, but seems like a good ide to me. It would be difficult to back fit to modern close coupled system

Thread: Insurance companies |
11/10/2016 20:08:47 |
I was with Direct Line for ages. Supposedly got a "discount" for having car, travel, house and pet insurance with them. Lord knows what it would have been without the discount! Changed the house insurance 2 years ago and paid half. Dumped the pet insurance for one with better cover. Will cancel the travel insurance when it's next due. Last June my car insurance cover seemed steep with a significant increase. Asked the Meercats for their opinion. Got 85 quotes below Direct Line's price. Now pay £150 less for the same cover except for a slight increase in the excess for a chipped windscreen. It seems the insurance companies have a different interpretation of the word loyalty. I shall shop around again next June. |
Thread: What has happened to this die to cause this ? |
29/04/2016 08:56:42 |
Try using the die on a bit of mild steel. If it cuts ok it is probably the bit of silver steel that is the problem. |

Thanks for the information. I have never used a tapping head, though always assumed they were auto reversing. Tapping with a VFD makes sense, you would need reverse for that. |

I too am irritated by the lack of a central t slot on my Boxford VM 30. However I simply drilled two 1" x 1/2" steel bars to match the existing T slots with a central 3/8" stud. The clamps go on the stud and achieve the same thing as a central T slot. I have never understood the need for reverse on a milling machine...does it put metal back on when you take too much off? Someone please enlighten me! Yes, it does lack a quill but it is such a good machine for its size I wouldn't part with it. |

"It will separate but the parts are a very close fit."
Quite so, but if you do take it apart you will be amazed at how much cr*p has found its way inside! It's worth giving them a good clean out once in a while. Make a couple of small centre punch marks on each side of the joint line so that it goes back together the same way round, other than that there's nothing to fear about stripping it down.
See here for a description... https://misterlinnsworkshop.wordpress.com/2014/12/31/our-own-words-used-against-us/ A Myford direct mount chuck may have detail differences but the method is much the same.
