Thread: Miniature pressure gauges |
13/01/2017 12:47:04 |
I'm not a steam man, but on another forum I belong to there was a suggestion of modifying fire extinguisher pressure gauges for use on engine boilers. http://www.sparetimelabs.com/animato/animato/3003/3003bd.html Just thought this might be useful info for anyone contemplating making their own gauges. Danny You might also have a look at Micro 100 small carbide boring tools. Catalogue: http://www.micro100.com/catalogs.htm Quite a few on eBay USA, some of which may be suitable for you. Not sure how the price compares to Mitsubishi, though. Dave |

Anybody here encountered OD tape? Used to be quite common in the oilfield. Tape was marked in inches divided by Pi. Wrap the tape around a tubular and read off the OD directly. And don't forget the 10" = 1 ft rules/tapes on the rig floor! Dave |

From the days when it might have used steel guide supports etc. Lots don't. There used to be a made in B'ham brand about. Can't remember the name. One versions used a simple thick steel plate for the table. They were reckoned to be pretty good all round but used prices were pretty high. John This looks like my cheapo Aldi/Lidl one. Can't get it to cut straight no matter what I do to adjust the various settings. Dave |
Thread: An oil gun that works? |

Posted by Andrew Tinsley on 02/01/2017 16:27:55:
Hello, I cannot see why there is any confusion. I said OIL GUN in my post and not oil can! I think that should define what I am looking for! I have had several over the years and they all leak. NOT I may say, around the nipple but just about anywhere else that they can! So can anyone tell me a make that is oil tight.? Please don't let the thread drift!! Just a name will do me! Thanks , Andrew.
On the Myford forum someone suggested good results using a Tecalemit brass grease gun and an adapter designed by (I believe) Simon Collier, (although the drawing is signed Bill). Just received my gun and next job is to make the new adapter and test. eBay item number:112251173038 is an example.

I quick search of 'More Latest Posts' found this one. I couldn't remember when/who requested the info. Earlier today, I posted a link to a possible suitable d.i.y. cut off slide for you, Neil Lickfold: http://downrivertools.com/downriver-tools/cross-slide-tooling-plan-sets Dave

Hi Raibows, If you haven't already, check out Down River Tools out of Detroit, Michigan. He's a hobbyist who has designed turrets and tooling for a number of lathes, both old and new. No connection beyond being a satisfied customer. The'yre good drawings and the fellow is very helpful. www.downrivertools.com Andrew Hutchinson Surrey, BC ,Canada That is a very interesting link. There was someone on here recently (Sorry, can't remember your name) looking for a cutoff slide. Perhaps he could look at Dave |

For £500 you could buy a lifetime's supply of carbide cutters new. Why bother with resharpening, unless of course you like the challenge. Have a look at Bangood or Aliexpress. Dave |

My wife bought a laptop from Amazon UK with free shipping, including to Ireland. When she put in our Irish address, the price went up to reflect the difference in VAT rates between UK and Ireland, or so said Amazon. Dave |
Thread: Reilang oilers |
23/12/2016 22:36:02 |
Well, I watched the video. The design of the oilers has certainly changed since mine were made but the basic idea is still the same. I stripped mine down once again, poked around a bit and reassembled it. It now works, but which bit of poking did the trick, I know not. Dave |

I have two Reilang oilers; one works and one doesn't and I can't find out why the one doesn't. They are very simple bits of kit - two telescopic brass tubes with a compression spring in them and a ball valve on the outboard end. The ball is free to come off its seat, I don't see any damage to the seat, nothing else amiss that I can see but it just won't pump. Anybody got any ideas what to look for/at? Is there another ball at the base of the spout that I haven't noticed? |

... Although paid for by advertising, its business model is to compete head on with Google & others by catering for customers concerned with privacy issues. This is quite dangerous for Google, who depend on collecting customer data as a way of targeting advertising. Google must be concerned about the ever increasing number of people aware of privacy issues and the possibility that they might be damaged by a major privacy scandal, such as an egregious leak. Dave It is very interesting to note that since using Pale Moon with DDG, I'm blitzed with advertising to download Google Chrome. Dave |
Thread: What the 'ell was that? |

When I was on a small ship anchored in Bahrain, I could watch the Concorde flight take off from Manama on the ship's radar. Wait for the engines roar and then see only three or four blips across the screen as the plane went off down the runway and into low altitude. Once above about 50 - 100 feet, it was lost. At about 1/2 mile, the roar was deafening. Those the days before Concorde was allowed into the U.S. Dave |
Thread: DuckDuckGo [search engine] |

DuckDuckGo is the home search engine on the Pale Moon browser. I'm using Pale Moon in preference to Opera and after 6 months like it very much and wouldn't return to Opera or Internet Explorer or Google Chrome (neither of which I've tried). Pale Moon is similar to Firefox (I'm told) but very much cut down, which is a good thing in my opinion. Dave |

No problem to re-format the disk and install something like this: Windows 7 pro plenty of other vendors out there. Russell P.S. It seems to me that the main ideas behind W 10 are for MS to take control of your computer, push advertising, and sell Apps. With a new computer (late 2016 vintage), I have been told by the internet community that you cannot downgrade from W10 Home to W7. It is possible if W10 Pro is pre-installed. If upgrading to W10 Pro from Home edition, the downgrade to W7 option is not possible. I also asked if it was possible to reformat the disk and install W7, but was told that Might not work because some of the new drivers would not be compatible with W7. I'm sure there are ways around the problem, but I don't know nearly enough about computers to try. I like the sound of Classic Shell so will have a look at that. Dave |

"What is the advantage of the Meek apron handwheel over the leadscrew handwheel? " 1. The apron handwheel dial can be zeroed at any point, and is 1.00 inch/rev 2. The apron handwheel is more conveniently placed than the leadscrew handwheel. The leadscrew handwheel calibration is more accurate than the Meek handwheel, but for most of my work the apron handwheel is good enough. Out of interest I checked the calibration against the leadscrew handwheel over several inches of travel of the rack, and it was within +/- 3 thou. Mike Thanks for your assessment, Mike. I'll just continue to use my present setup. Dave |

What is the advantage of the Meek apron handwheel over the leadscrew handwheel? Both are graduated but the leadscrew is lower geared than the rack and pinion, so (in my opinion) is more precise when turning to a length. Dave |

Has anyone made one of these? I believe they were supplied either as kits or drawings. Opitec is still in business, but they can't help with drawings. Does anyone have a set they would be prepared to let me have a copy of please? Dave |
