Just to round the circle, my power feed has been completed and works very well. For more information go to my websites mikes-models.com and my blog

Thread: Simpler the Better -what do you use?
20/02/2010 17:12:14
I used the free version of Alibre after trying several programs including Turbo Cad etc. Alibre is excellent in my view and has the benefit of the easiest transfer of item to drawings. I managed to get useful output after just a couple of hours. They then reduced the price from several hundred pounds to under £100 so I moved from the free version to the full bought one.

You can design to professional levels then put the parts into assembles i.e. a complete engine. The only limitation on the free version is the number of parts that can be put into an assembly. I believe they have now permanently reduced the price of the software. I wouldn't use anything else now and the drawings element is really easy and impressive.

Why not just download the free copy and spend a couple of hours using it. You get the drawings capacity with the free version as well. Its only my opinion but if you put turbo cad on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the best then I would rate  all the CAd packages I tried (including Solidworks full copy) in the 4 to 6 range and Alibre as an 11! I have NO connection to them.

If you are a professional engineer doing this for a living and have been trained on the pro packages my comments may not hold up, but if you are a home model engineer with no previous experience then go Alibre!

Hello keithmart,

I refurbished my Myford ML7 last year and covered the refurbishment on my website. There may be something of use to you so have a look at http://www.mikes-models.com/ccmyfordrefurb.html

Mike.

If you have any questions then please email me. I also intend to send my lathe away for a regrind later this year. One thing the refurbishment gave me was the confidence to strip the lathe down.

Kindest regards, Mike

Hello Dougie,

A partial answer really. I am about to start on a power feed for my RF25 (also from Axminster tools) and am listing the work done on my website http://www.mikes-models.com/powerfeed.html when I have done some that is. I only mention it here since my method is using a 12 volt windscreen wiper motor but after struggling for a while on how to power the motor with variable speed I found the Proxxon power feed (see my website).

If you want to email me re my approach you can do so via the website above.

Thread: Malcolm Stride trophy or award
23/09/2009 11:27:20
Hello David, I am very sorry to hear of Malcolm Strides untimely demise. My thoughts are with Malcolm's family.

Since Malcolm's articles were always the first I turned to in the magazine, I certainly missed his contributions in recent months. My post however is a request to the organisers of the exhibition that a special award or prize be set up for internal combustion engines in Malcolm's real, or penned name.

Since Malcolm created much interest in his engines and as a regular contributor to the magazine you may think it appropriate for you present employers to sponsor the prize/award.

Thread: Variable Speed Controllers for Lathes
22/07/2009 14:01:08
Hello John.

I recently refurbished a Myford ML7 and covered the rebuild on my website  www.mikes-models if the ink doesn't work.

I fitted a new 3 phase motor from Direct Drives who advertise in the magazine although I found them on eBay. I must say I have not regretted it al all and am very pleased to be able to control the speed. The only issue I have had is that if the wife has the cooker on in the house and other items such as washing machine etc, it can trip the RCB. I beleive from others that this is not uncoommon. the amount of times this has happened has reduced virtually to zero if I am aware of the load already placed on our domestick supply.

The support via telephone frome Direct Drives was excellent and I have no hesitation of recommending them (I have no link to them other than a customer).

As I said you can see some detail about my experience on the website or my blog

Kind regards, Mike

I am a big fan (although still learning) of Alibre and its FREE! It is a nice 3D package and I designed an inline boring tool setting device with it. Producing the drawings was a very simple process.

I have no link to the company.

Hello David,

You can put my chess article and the ball turning article when published, on the website. I have no objections.

Thread: MJ Engineering's Open Day

Hello jason, we meet again! I have just resumed the Fowler for the next week and intend to get the hornplates fixed (as soon as the fixings arrive) then she will be standing on all four wheels and I will make a start on the tender over the next couple of months.

For other readers information I am building the same model as Jason and am recording the build on my website (I am having problems since switching host so will post address again when problems resolved)

Although this was taken last year and a few items 'taped' on......I will posta more up to date picture at the end of the week.
