QED O/R the mystical recipes still work. Regards Ian. |

Sadly, the nanny state has pre determined that the Jean Pool is at the point of drying up, coupled with the fact that ingineering as a full time job is only carried out in the far east, the old Alchemy wheezes drop into obscurity. I'll bet our black arts are still practised in these satanic manufactories' who haven't heard of HSE. Bet there aren't any "Factories Act" posters on their walls. Still, we are good at flipping burgers and wearing buttons out killing aliens and crashing cars. Regards Ian. |

Can you still get piano heaters? Old standby was to cover the lathe etc. and stick a low wattage light bulb under the cover. Only woks with Tungsten filament bulbs, NOT Halogen or LEDs. Regards Ian. |

Thread: Milling spindle motor - AC or DC |
01/10/2020 13:11:50 |
In the main, when that book was written, there wasn't the plethora of DC motors available. Think you would be hard pressed to find an AC motor on many toy CNC routers Etc.today. Regards Ian. |

It occurs to me that if a person's finger nerves do not work well enough to send the brain a signal to dip a tool being ground that is getting warm in the water pot, maybe they should not be grinding tools or doing other hot work. Burns are no joke if they happen repeatedly in the same area.
THERE ARE NO STUPID QUESTIONS Regards Ian

Blue Peter how to's for grown ups. As an Ingineer, the mechanical items are interesting and the skills of the experts excellent BUT, for your average great unwashed, being shown every "How To" detail would lead to the destruction of many "would be" valuable items. In the distant past, DIY was a necessity and at a time when Hammer chewers made as good a job as SOME of the professionals, just look how DIY became a "Hobby" and how many professionals had to be called in to rectify abortions. Gas,Electricary, water, Building Etc. Kenny Everett got it right. Wonder why the big "Home Improvement" centres are reducing in size. I do use the word "Professionals" advisedly, Billy the Kid is still alive and well. Regards Ian. Edited By Circlip on 01/10/2020 12:55:01 |
Thread: Cheap Milling Vice Question |

"While this is in part to protect the advertisers who largely fund this site " Oh dear, the times they are a changing. Can remember, despite numerous complaints of malpractice from users with proven cases, ONE site advertiser was protected vehemently and continued to "Rook" the customers. Some of us have loooooong memories. Regards Ian |
Thread: 3/16 Cast Iron Rod |

Nul Points Francis IoM, for lateral thinking, too subtle. Are you sure the pad linings aren't sintered? Had a clutch plate and brake pads on my Guzzi, wore a bit more quickly than the normal but stuck like the proverbial. Wonder how many slices to turn from a sash weight? Doh. Nick Clark 3, how about another couple of numbers? We know the diameter but not the length or quantity, every little helps. Regards Ian. |

Can't get into scrap yards anymore, sash weights must be breathing a sigh of relief. Do you know anyone with a broken machine vice??? Regards Ian. |
Thread: Cheap Milling Vice Question |
28/09/2020 11:37:31 |
Ah double yes, the Abwood. In how many proper ingineering shops could you walk past a milling machine with one bolted to the top slide? At the side of it, the handle showing the planishings of the "Gentle" massage of a copper hammer???? This was of course necessary to ensure the lump of metal was securely fastened before cleaving damn gert lumps from the job. Sadly 90% of the rubbish sold to serve toy machinery hasn't the spheroids to resist the ministrations of a rubber hammer. Blue Heeler, thought of getting rid of the body casting altogether and using the machine table as the body? Two jaws, one fixed and an adjustable? Regards Ian. |

Can't see how "C of C" has been contravened so difficult to give an opinion as to quality or supplier. Once obtained a Small vice to modify to make workable as in an article shown in an early MEW. Mine must have come from a "Cost reduced" foundry ALSO from Taiwan. It went back to M/M, not enough material to clean up. Regards Ian. |

" Anyone found a way of getting old (machine) oil out of the wooden parts of a well used toolbox " Recent "Salvage Hunters The Restorers" think they poured Meths onto an oil soaked panel and ignited the Meths, it drew the oil out.
Regards Ian. They also use Meths and fine wire wool for cleaning existing varnish before refinishing. Edited By Circlip on 27/09/2020 12:25:01 |
