Thread: What O-ring is this?
13/11/2021 10:54:47

Not forced to be a "Standard". Only place to get o-rings for carb on my bike was from carb spares supplier. Similar problem with the one the water governor on boiler.

Without going through all the legal gobbltygook, the original GPO/Telecoms document was license to receive television pictures and although the independent broadcasters didn't get any money from this was the bone of contention for many who "Didn't watch BBC", the term "Receive" being the killer. As the GPO/Telecoms were an independent licensing authority and gave a "Sub" to the BBC did not the terms change when BBC were handed the golden goose when it changed from getting crumbs from the fees to the golden eggs of total control of collected revenue?

Sad after all the years since Calder Hall, we still haven't got a SAFE steam kettle and given the speed of invention in the event of a war, we can devise more effective ways to kill each other quickly but it's so expensive to "Research" ways to have a more comfortable existence without screwing the planet.

Thread: Book Your Covid Booster! Errr, How? Where?
11/11/2021 10:28:47

Got a call from local health centre a couple of weeks ago relating to COPD/Asmah condition I am plagued with to make sure I was still stealing air. Used to be a yearly (pre covid) visit but now phone call. Asked about booster but after a few minutes was informed computer was playing up (AGAIN). Had a knee mail from NHS and a letter from same giving telephone number to contact for booster but suspect, as others have posted that nearest jab centre will be miles away. Doing it this way for first jab would have been 40mins drive away via M62. I think not.

Strange that RR should be given a nest egg to "Develop" a domestic power system, to echo Sam's posting, all UK new clear (NOT New que lar as many ignoramuses state) powered subs have a steam generating plant supplied by RR so it's not new technology for them. It seems that the "Think of a number and quadruple it" costing syndrome applied to government supplies is being thrust upon us. Generating "Sets" of various sizes have been constructed for more than sixty years so it's hardly a new black art sadly though "We didn't think that would happen" issues on safety are not learned, must try harder on that aspect.

After extensive "Tours" on both small (SSNs) and large (SSBNs) thanks to immediate family connections, and a "round the bay and back in time for tea" trip, despite the formica clad walls in many sections, realisation hits pretty quickly that they are not underwater caravans but are - - -warships. Sam.

And oh yes Michael, the word BOGOFF is a duplex term, one is an acronym, the other a directive and applied as a dangler especially to enable some to increase their post count.

So the big M is now to be taken over by the country that owns the other big M I wonder which rules will apply if (when) their US imports hit the shelves? Since the American owners screwed the big four with their insistence on the shelf prices permitted for a "Bitter" soft drink product, Can't understand Uncle Joe's "No special trade deals with the UK post Brexit" attitude, they seem to be buying big lumps of Britain. Beware Chlorinated chicken, no doubt the big M will get some. Strangely enough, they've just had a smacking for "Non EU salt and pepper" dressings on same product.

Thread: Music on TV Programmes.

TV sound was always compromised in the past with the use of the ubiquitous 7 x 4 elliptical on table models and 5" dia in consuls. Picture quality being far more important than sound reproduction.. Since the introduction of Nicam and sound bars, there is no excuse for garbage renditions of noise. Sadly everyone and their dogs in broadcasting seem to have to put their own arty farty interpretations of what we, the great unwashed should appreciate.

Pre S/B concerts etc. lacked a bass content and was rather squarky but now with the improvement we seem to have gone full circle and coupled with the Youf outlook of LOUD IS GOOD for musick, we are expected to accept mumbling "conversations" as the norm.

No matter what the quality or expense of our sound reproduction systems, garbage in = garbage out.

Thread: Anyone updated to Windows11 yet ?
02/11/2021 10:12:58

So microsloth has launched a new games O/S? They don't seem to get any system working fully before a NEW system escapes. What number update are they on now, system only officially released on 5th October and are they going to sort out the mess they generated on print servers due to a windoze 10 update before they cast that to the wind. My own ols XP and later doze 7 will serve me well and far from being an electronic luddite (I have an annoying cylindrical box that has nearly graced the window at times) but give us a break. Years ago, I purchased a webcam that refused to work for no apparent reason. Although NO mention in the instructions, it transpired that unless you had "Intel Inside" it wouldn't work due to a minor difference in the processor build.

Wonder how many who have been fooled into buying "Glass" will have to replace their TVs when they get fed up with being ripped off by Murdocks minions?

Thread: SKY abandoning their satellite customers

Both systems have limitations, Cable, costs linked to "Maintaining existing service." As I am limited to one fibre cable provider, their charges for even a basic ISP became exorbitant. So, changed to someone who doesn't doesn't using the "National" wire system of which mine will "Never be converted to fibre." Still too expensive for 9mbps.

Ditched TV supply years ago in favour of Freeserve and Freesat But Sat suffers when it rains.

Used to be "Would you buy a car from this salesman?" The suppliers have joined the ranks of "Gypsies tramps and thieves."

Thread: Paint stripper
10/10/2021 10:48:39

And just to reassure everyone, In my parents pub sixty years ago, standard operation Saturday night after the last of the great unwashed left, disconnect barrels from pipework and draw through cleaning fluid and fill pipes and hand pumps and leave overnight. First thing Sunday morning, connect pipes to mains water and flush whole system for 15 minutes. Lastly reconnect to barrels and pull through fresh beer.

Oh yes, cleaning fluid heavy concentration of Caustic soda. Never lost a customer, must have been lucky. As this was/is standard practice, Flushed straight down the Drains?

Thread: Paint stripper
09/10/2021 11:50:33

Trouble is with most volatile paint strippers, the nanny state has to account for those who think DIY is a HOBBY. At the time when chasing globules of Mercury on the Skool bench and acids could be bought over the counter, we didn't need to be told to take care with knives as they could cut you, sorry you could cut YOURSELF with them. Thanks to TLOTF, we had to be told that sniffing Balsa cement gave you a high, same with "Dope" (NOT the drugs version). If there was a universal solvent for all paint finishes, we wouldn't need a proliferation of different glues to stick things together. Thanks to t'internet, we don't have to get off our butts to visit the public library to find which paint base can be decimated by which solvent, problem is, resultant slush has to be neutralised for disposal, an effect which seems effective on some users brain cells.

Anybody else found that suds effectively works on ORIGINAL Hammerite?

Regards Ian.
