Alan at MJ Engineering does a chain thats about 3 1/4 links per inch for use as steering chain on teh 2" engines, £8.70 per meter. If you are using it for steering then the links should be silver soldered as they can open over time.

I think its the one that Reeves sell castings for, You will still need to finish turn the castings so they will be no smaller than a fabrication.

I use a basic machine mart one with a 25lts tank, think its about 1.5hp. Runs my stuart beam fine on 20psi, don't need it higher but it will go to 75psi, just a bit noisy when the compressor kicks in.

Thread: Ignition coils for small engines |
29/05/2009 19:32:26 |
I went for a CDI ingnition from MjN Fabrication (but he's not selling at the moment) when I built my hit & miss engine
It uses a hall effect sensor which makes it very easy to advance & retard the ignition by having the magnet or sensor on an adjustable mount. And being quite small can easily be lost under an engine rather than having a large wooden box for a buzz coil & large battery
Several of the Builders in the US are now using the following systems while MjN is out of production

Thread: Website Articles - Suggestions Please |

I may be an idea to include the articles by Westbury on the engines that you have recently published free plans for such as the centaur as this may help readers who wish to build them.
And while you are on what about a index of ME content or at least include a link to the ones on the web in your links section.

I see that it is now possible to attach pics. BUT I no longer have the option to edit the ad! This facility was there when I originally posted thew ad as I tried editing it to get a photo on. Would also be handy to be able to edit ads so they can be marked sold or removed.

Have a try on e-bay, I have bought whole volumes for £5-6 though the more recent ones are not so common. Just type " model engineer" in the search box

Thread: lathe tool cutting oils |
19/05/2009 17:46:11 |
For steel and drilling bronze I use soluable oil about 20:1 and apply with a small brush For Aluminium, parafin gives the best results. Milk is good on copper (full fat). Brass and Cast Iron are best cut dry.
At the rate we remove metal the fluid is not as critical as in production work where the work would get far hotter and the swarf needs clearing away. You will find that just a small amount applied with a brush will allow your tools to cut faster and you should get a better finish as a result
Rocol do a few of spray lubs, Foamcut, Cleancut, etc Have a look at J&L they sell them, its best to look at the virtual cataloge as searching throws up too many results.

I'm sure David could point you in the right direction for the back issues that featured Julia Olds boiler build, It shoul dgive you a good idea of whats involve in building a boiler to teh current regs, unfortunatly she does not have anything on her web sites about the boiler project.

If you are going a bit larger then the next step up from MAP gas would be a torch that is run from a propane cylinder. Machine Mart do a couple of reasonable ones and the Bullfinch range are OK as well. Silvert have a larger range of burner sizes but they do cost a bit more.
As David says an idea of what you want to do would help with suggesting nozzel sizes etc.

Thread: MJ Engineering's Open Day |
17/05/2009 20:05:45 |
Well to get the TE section off to a start I had a break from the workshop today and went over to MJ's openday held at the Reading clubs track. It was good to chat to other builders and potential builders. Here are a few pics of the engines that were there.
John A's 2" Fowler, he's a bit behind me so wanted to know how I tackled some parts.
Another Fowler, the builder is waiting to get his tender sides flanges so again was looking closely at my tender as its a bit hard to make out some of teh details on the drawing. A very nice Clayton, not one of MJ's products but the Yately livery suggests its local
4"? Fowler Showmans well under way

It does not seem possible to post an advert when attaching a photo, they post OK when a photo is not included.
It may be better to allow a link to a hosted image rather than upload one to the ME site.
