Thread: hit and miss engines
04/04/2010 18:50:18
Have a word with Kevin, he mostly does steam but a Hit & Miss should be OK, he's also into traction engines having just completed a 4" Mac. He does a lot of the Stuart range for customers.

Thread: Is the 4" Rotary Table at ArcEurotrade better than SOBA ?
02/04/2010 20:30:15
Maybe the 4" Sobas are different but I've had a 6" Soba for about 9 months and am quite happy with it. Got the full set with div plates & tailstock.

Thread: 2" Aveling & Porter Roller
31/03/2010 17:10:00
Right now I've got the right engine I don't know of any suppliers of castings.

There is a guy who posts on Tractiontalk Forum and Model Engineering Clearing House by the name of Kaycee who is building one, you should be able to contact him via those sites.

The block is not suitable for machining from solid CI but as it is very box like and could easily be done as a steel or brass fabrication mostly from 1/8, 3/16 and 1/4" plate. The same with most of the other parts that were originally available as castings. The rolls would have to come out of CI bar or thick wall steel tube with the ctrs welded in.

If you don't have the articles let me know as all but the last page is available on the net, I have it downloaded and stored away.

The sections through the block can be seen here

EDIT forget all that I was thinking of the DX Roller

Thread: I well be in your side of the pond in may
29/03/2010 10:39:12
If you can spare a day then a trip upto Yorkshire for the Harrogate show would be worth the effort, planty of models and most of the traders will be there. It's the 7-9th May, theharrogateshow
You may also find a few trades close their shops around show times as they take most of their staff & stock to the show so if visiting any phone first to check they will be open

I don't know how you thought it was a Vertex rotary table as the cataloge picture clearly has a big Ax*******er Lable on it

Thread: allchin water pump

I do indeed

Pop into Traction Talk Forum, they have a separate section for models - general discussions, Members models and drawing errors. The full size stuff is not bad either.

There are a few alchin owners both 1 1/2" and bigger as well as some who have progressed onto bigger things.

You just need to register, if you find it useful then a small contribution to running costs will allow you to access the archive and see all of the photos in posts depending on how they are hosted. My 2" Fowler build is on there.

Another less active site is Yahoo group

BTW the reason for the pin is to help stop airlocks, without it a bubble could form in the 5/32 passage and the gas would just compress with each stroke of the ram and not be expelled. The spigot is usually a bit smaller than the bore, its just the emphasis on concentricity that I can really see the need for.

Have you Tried MJ Engineering alan does them so should fit a 2" engine.

RA Baker also do a 7mm glass one which should be small enough.

Thread: Help re Gears

Just seen it on youtube, I would not go much over 1/8" wide, probably could not fit anything wider anyway and its not as though its going to be pulling you along

My Fowler is 1/6th scale (2") and the gear faces in that are between 3/8 & 1/2 so full size would be 2 1/4 to 2 1/2". Its a larger traction engine than the little samson prototype.

The 1" Minnie in my avitar uses 3/16 wide gears throughout.

Thread: Brazing torch
24/03/2010 12:21:53
Circlip, I was thinking that. Maybe he wants to "silver braze" as the Americans call it. I doubt propane would get upto the temps required for proper brazing unless it was very small parts as its usually done with oxy/acet or I use the carbon arc rods on a welder.

Thread: 1/12" scale Burrell traction engine Model Engineer article request.
24/03/2010 07:40:11
I expect Edward will be doing a series on the 6" Gold Medal Tractor, he's already given us a taster with the cylinder casting articles. There are a few Builders proving the design & casting so hopefully we will see a series soon once any queries have been ironed out, although its possible to follow the builds on the web with Julia Olds leading the way.

One of the problems seems to be the fact that most builds series are about new engines onto the market, most of whats available at the moment has already been covered in one of the mags over time. The only newly available * engines in the last few years are the above mentioned GMT and MJ Engineerings 3" 8nhp Wallis & steevens.

Jason

* these castings and engines have been about for some time but only just become more readily available from Little Samson & MJ Eng.

Thread: Brazing torch
23/03/2010 19:28:34
Although the MAPP gas is said to have a hotter flame most of these torches will not put enough heat into larger items.

Given that you already have Propane cylinders I would go with a basic torch to use with them, something like this would be OK for fabrications and even a small boiler for a stationary engine

Thread: my hobby store

I would say that 95% of the tooling was designed with the Myford in mind so you are looking at a 3 1/2" ctr height lathe but may need the 9 and a bit gap capacity to make some of the parts.

Most designs could be modified to suit a particular lathe

ThEre is a thread on this forum re a 1 1/2" burrell, contact Abby as he has a set of the Fred Stone drawings, may be able to sort you out a copy.

Do you know if it was ever covered in any of the ME mags?

The drawing on page 190 "B" seems to show the spigot on the end of the plunger smaller than the 5/32 hole but like you say can't see the need for perfect concentricity?

You have to remember that a lot of the text is straight from the original build articles and the drawings have likely been altered since hence your drawing showing 5/32 but the text probably refered to a drawing printed in the mag or an earlier revision of the main drawings.

If its the Basset Lowke then as the castings are no longer available can't see much point in a construction article being written unless someone wants to show it being fabricated and cut from solid.

If it was previously covered which I don't think it was then just find out what volumes it was it and watch out for them on e-bay, I have bought several series on Traction Engines that interest me.

I see in the latest issue there is now a UK suppier for the Pevensey and the other engines from MSM though they do look a lot like stuart designs

The only thing to watch if you want to by an indexable holder for the flywheel is the minimum size hole, even with something like the mini bar that chronos do you will not have the length to do the 3/4" long bore!! as the small dia means you can't use a larger diameter and hence longer bar.

Russel, have a look at the reprinted Sally articles about the S50, first one shows how to grind suitable tools.
