Thread: Massey Ferguson Tractor on front cover of ME 4382 |
17/07/2010 07:53:12 |
Have to agree with Chris there, I don't hear complaints when a full size loco or traction engine is on the cover. There are people (not many) who make model tractors so why can't they have some inspiration on the cover
![]() There were also several traction engines, stationary engines and an old lathe in the article

Sounds an interesting project, I'd like to see some pics of that. I'm quite well advanced on an MJ 2" Fowler A7, you can see my progress here.
If you are not a member have a look at Traction Talk Forum, although mostly full size they have an active model section and there are a couple of members with model B6s including Edward George who may be able to help with any queries even though Galanthus is 6" . There is also a guy who goes by the name IanB6 who has made several 4" B6s and has a small foundary so could probable help with casting if you need it.
On and there is a good series of build photos of a LSM 6" crane engine here and a look back through the old magazines on line here has a few Superlions and shows the built up compound cylinder blocks if you are going that route.

I know several people who have had rims and smokeboxed rolled by the following. Not sure if they will do the tees and weld them in as well.
You could also ring Alan at MJ Engineering, he has recently started to get the Fowler rims made up in steel rather than the cast alloy, he may give you details of his fabricators who do very neat welding of teh tees. The 3" rears are about 18" dia so within your size range

Thread: Fitting a Chuck to a Rotary Table |
14/07/2010 19:22:41 |
John (Bogstandard) did a good write up on making a suitable mounting
If its not a threaded chuck then turn a circular plate about 25mm larger dia than the chuck, counterbore or countersink for the chuck mounting screws and then mill 3 or 4 slots into the edge depending on the number of slots in your table and use these with tee nuts, studs etc to hold it to your table just like the Chronos ones

If you look up "Gib Strips" or "Gib strip adjustment" that should answer your queries, its just a poor translation.

Thread: Cutting a Groove - help needed |
12/07/2010 07:23:36 |
You would be better off with a rotary table in the mill and use say a 6mm cutter to reduce the load, an indexer will give you a facited bottom to the groove.
Another option would be a thinner parting tool say 1.5mm and go in either side of the groove again this will reduce the loading on the tool.
Whats the lowest speed you can get down to?

AS Said HPC have a good range if you get the spec from the drawings and you don't need to register to view their products & prices. You could also try GMB, I've used them in the past where Boston Gears refs are specified usually on US designs
Reeves do the machined gears but may be more expensive than HPC.

Thread: The use of adjustable reamers |
09/07/2010 19:49:46 |
I would ream to fit or ream out a worn bore until smooth and then make a new shaft to fit.
From when I used to have an Austin 7 I seem to recall that the king pins could be bought oversize by varing amounts like 0.005", 0.010" . I'm not that old but did restore one.

Thread: er collets |
04/07/2010 19:31:03 |
John there are some collets that are very similar to ERs that some of the imported sets use, sizes are on ARC's site, you may have these
Jason |
04/07/2010 17:46:39 |
It really all comes down to the overall dia of the collet generally the collets largest dia is 1mm more than the ER size.(largest & smallest are different)
As the size of thecollet goes up so does the max size it can hold eg an ER16 collet has a max capacity of 10mm while an ER 32 has a max of 20mm
And there is no such size as ER 23

Thread: Can you easly Silver solder to EN1A |
04/07/2010 08:43:41 |
Should not be a problem. If its a large item then use Tenacity No5 Flux as it will not get exhausted by the heat.
Have a look at my Hit & Miss engine in this album the base & body are all steel fabrications. As are these brackets and this
Welding and brazing are also other options as this gives a larger fillet to internal corners that can be ground to a nice cast look

Ah Got you now, you are talking about the plan view from inner face to teh outside of the curve which is dimensioned 1 1/2" but the 3/4" spacer looks a lot less than half that dimension,
So yes there is either a wrong dimension or its drawn out of scale/proportion, I would go with the former.
One would have expected it to be 1 7/8" by the addition of an extra 3/8" to the spacers but it scales at over 2" but then again I do feel that the drawings are sometimes compressed to get them to fit the mag layout
Jason Edited By JasonB on 03/07/2010 18:44:55 |
03/07/2010 15:55:16 |
Well that would match the dimensions, 1 1/2" verticals plus two 1/4" thick plates.
Front Beam is dimensioned smaller at 1 3/8" plus twice 1/4"
