Thread: Subscriber only content - can't access |

Just received a new subscriber number by email. It now works thanks. Still can't figure out why it stopped working while the website showed that I still had about three weeks left of my subscription. Russell |

You don't have to buy Windows, you don't have to use Talk Talk - but if you wish to do so there are strings attached which are rarely negotiable
It's difficult not to buy Windows if you are buying a new computer. Very few vendors sell them without it so you pay for it even if you don't want it. Russell |

Thanks Jason, Yes, the ME one expired a few years ago. The MEW one was due to expire just before the end of May so should still have been valid, however I renewed it yesterday and still have no access to subscriber content. Russell |

Yesterday I tried to read the latest MEW issue on this site as I haven't yet received it in France. When I click on Magazines in the top menu bar I am told that it is subscriber only content but I AM a subscriber and have been for many years. My subscription was valid until the end of May but as the renewal date is not far off I decided to renew it anyway in case the date was a problem. After some trouble with the Captcha on the subscription site thinking my computer was giving automated responses I eventually got my subscription renewed. I tried again and still no access to magazines. I checked my profile and it still has my subscription number entered so no problem there. I can access the magazines on Pocketmags but I find the web preferable. Can someone help sort this out? Russell |

Yes they are expensive for a one off job. You could try making one yourself. As you are not meshing with an existing wheel you could use involute gears I seem to remember John Stevenson published a method for making cutters some time ago. Meking cycloidal cutters is described here at length: making-clock-wheel-pinion-cutters Russell |

The existing set up is 26:52 and 6:72. If I replace the 26:52 with 39:39 I get the desired result. As near as I can measure the centre distance is 21.26mm. Not easy to measure, so might be a bit off. The gears appear to be cycloidal If I use divide 21.26 by 39 I get a module of 0.545mm which doesn't sound right, but if I try 40 dp I get a centre distance of 24.76, which is equally unlikely. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Clock wheel and pinion cutters are made in increments of 0.05 module so 0.55 is what you are looking for. You can buy them on line from Meadows and Passemore. Russell |

I still have one of these. Bought in the early 70s. The diagonal bracing makes it much more stable than the modern ones. The bench top is high quality 13 ply, doubled up at the clamping edge. None of your MDF here! Russell |

Spanish flu raced through humanity and then disappeared It had killed off everyone it possibly could and there was nowhere left for it to keep going, no-one tried to stop it spreading, only basic flu variants managed to continue Not entirely true. Some history of the attempts to control it here **LINK** some lessons to be learned there. Russell |

Most other countries don't know if they have variants or not. The world has suffered 3 waves, and variants could cause more. The outlook isn't clear yet.
Agreed, although here in France the testing for variants is very thorough. Figures are published by department regularly on the COVID tracking app. Here in dept. 66 we currently have 92.6 % of positive tests showing the British variant and 0.7 % South African and Brazilian variants. It shows how rapidly they can spread despite the restrictions on movement. Russell |

To cut sheet with a saw you ideally need at least two teeth in contact with the work at all times. The finest Swiss piercing saw blades available are 32 teeth per cm. so will just about do for your 0.1 mm. thickness but can only be used with a piercing saw frame. You could possibly adapt the blade holding on a scroll saw to take one but they are rather fragile. Watchmakers manage to cut accurately with them but it takes practice! A pair of good quality watchmaker's tin snips should do the job, followed by a small hammer against a flat surface is necessary. Russell |

I've noticed the same effect with dried fruit mixture. The banana slices are always on top however many times you try to get the mixed. I think Steve's 5000 gallon tank was more to do with buoyancy rather than vibration. Russell

I have the Warco version of that mill (ZX15) and have it mounted on a drip tray 35 in. wide by 25 in. back to front. You do need another 8 in. each side though to accomodate full movement of the x travel but if you arrange it so that the table is above the height of the bench or whatever you have at the side you can allow the table to extend over the bench. One big improvement I have made is to replace the single phase motor with a three phase one and inverter. Not only gives you easy speed variation but reduces vibration and thus improves surface finish. Russell |

Does it contain any information you need to keep? If not you could try formatting it on the computer that says it can't read it. Format it as NTFS if that option is available. If it does contain important information you are probably stuffed anyway. Russell |

Finally, one thing that always concerns me is the number of people claiming to know better than those paid experts. If those "know-alls" are so clever, why aren't they offering their services to HMG?
The trouble is that a lot of them are in government! That's certainly the case here in France, they've been totally ignoring the experts and as a result we have the highest infection rate in Europe. Russell |

I have the same problem in reverse. It is expensive and uncertain to have anything from delivered by courier from the U.K. Small items that can be sent by Royal Mail and are valued at less than €43 arrive here in France by La Poste with no fees or VAT to pay if it is to a private address. Doesn't help Fizzy though. Russell Edited By Russell Eberhardt on 14/04/2021 11:30:34 |
