Hi Paul,

See the thread on salt baths, or if you want a safer life a deep fat fryer on 'high' should do the job.

Be warned though, for some reason my little bits of steel are seen as harmful to human health even if they are lying on top of or inside steel cockware...

Neil

Is that your latest project Neil? surprise

Personally Maurice I find the best way to get rid of any version of Windows is to do a fresh install of Linux on a reformatted hard drive. I only had to do this once and ever since I have been problem (and Windows) free

cool just joking

Thread: Parting off using a replaceable blade parting tool.
20/06/2013 08:02:45

Yes, a "v" ground on the to of the tool helps but is difficult to acheive accurately without the aid of a Quorn or similar. I grind a convex "v" on the front of the tool, it only needs to be about 10 or 20 deg and makes the swarf turn away from the sides of the cut, reducing the likelihood of the dreaded jam.

Trouble is that only sharpens the ends while most of the cutting is done on the side.

Thread: Chester Centurion - opinion
18/06/2013 11:35:09

If I were looking for a belt drive 6 speed lathe from Chester I would go for the 920 and save the rest of the money for a decent mill.

I've used the tubes of Sikaflex and the Loctite equivalent, for sealing teak decking on a boats. I think you will find it too thick to pour well.

You could always try making a mould and casting them with something like this

Bob,

I think is is a bit of both ... The site for not obaying Microsoft Standards ... and Microsoft for imposing its own standards.

Dave

They are not Microsoft standards. Microsoft is just one member of the World Wide Web Consortium which is constantly developing the standards for web pages. Unfortunately Microsoft doesn't always follow the standards they help to write sad

Have a look at this thread

It is a relatively low speed one but he's made some higher speed ones on the same principle; see further down the page.

Thread: Short thread-cutting

Posted by JamesF on 04/06/2013 16:43:17:

Not sure about imperial, but metric thread profiles are defined in terms of the pitch, aren't they? So if a 1mm pitch is required then any tap for a metric 1mm pitch thread will do the job?

That's right. 6 mm x 1mm is a common size. Perhaps a bit fragile though. You should be able to find 10 mm x 1 mm which has a bit more "meat".

Thread: Why is this site's functionality so DREADFUL!!!!!
04/06/2013 16:58:33

I can't see any of the problems complained about here. I'm using both Firefox and Chromium browsers on Linux and it all works just fine. Perhaps those with problems should look to their own setups and perhaps ask for help politely rather than calling the site c**p.

A trick I've used for large diameter fine threads is to use a smaller bottoming tap in the toolpost as a thread cutting tool. That results in the correct thread form. You can grind a bit off the end to get the thread to the bottom of the recess if necessary.

I always screwcut under power but then I can go down to about 7 rpm.smiley

Thread: Finally mastered slitting
02/06/2013 16:12:17

I always had a problem on my mill, lowest speed 400 rpm, until I fitted a three phase motor and inverter for speed control. Now, using about 100 rpm with a 3" cutter on steel, no problem.

Russell.

P.S., the three phase motor also gives a better surface finish than the old single phase one.

Thread: Drill Sharpening.
02/06/2013 15:51:51

You don't say which drill jig you've made. HH describes one for small drills and one for 4 facet grinding in that book. I have made the 4 facet one and it works fine. Perhaps you should post a close-up picture of the tip of your reground drill?

It also helps if you can keep the blade cool, it cuts a lot better i find.

You say you are getting a 0.1-0.2mm accuracy - do you account for shrinkage in your cad

Surely the shrinkage depends on the size of the part. I used to be involved with plastic mouldings and we allowed 0.5 % for shrinkage after it came out of the mould.
