I have the Axminster version of this bandsaw. The camlock vice is, in my opinion, an excellent feature.
 
I have had my saw for about five years now and wouldn't be without it. I am still using the original blade, but there are better ones available.
 
A simple means of holding short work pieces with a piece of angle iron appeared in MEW October 2006, I don't have the issue number to hand at the moment. Illustrated is a piece of 3/4" square material stood on end having an 1/8" slice cut off with this method.

This is no surprise as it is a long time since it arrived on the Monday prior to publicaion. It is usually the day before, but it has arrived on the Monday after.

I have fitted one of these switches to my ancient Startrite dril which has a single phase motor connected to a 13A plug with three core cable.
 
The important thing to remember is that the line (live) feed from the plug goes through the emergency stop relay, so the power is cut off at source when you hit the red button.
 
I have opened up my switch an taken a picture which I will try to add here.

I have been following the thread with interest and was surprised that the Rotary Broach didn't get a mention.
 
A version of this tool was described by Jock Miller in MEW issue No. 157. It is quite straightforward to make, and the tool bit is easily ground on the most basic of grinding set ups.
 
Also the chicken & egg problem with making a square hole in the guide bush to produce a tool to make square holes is eliminated.
 
In the case of the buffer beam, you would just drill a pilot hole the AF size of the square, countersink it to just accommodate the cross corners size of the bit, then position the square in the correct orientation and 'drill' away.

I don't want to go off on a tangent to what has already been said, but I would like to make an observation.
 
I have both a Hobbymat mill and a Prazimat lathe from the same East German manufacturer which have some similarities, for instance the large aluminium hand wheels are identical.
 
The mill motor looks to be a smaller version of the lathe motor. To get to the point, I had a fail to start buzz with my lathe which turned out to be the centrifugal start switch. I found that one of the contacts had disappeared, leaving one contact point and a hole in the end of a contact spring, causing the intermittent contact.
 
I managed to find some salvaged contacts and removed the contact point and riveted in place. The lathe has been working ever since.
 
Sorry for the ramble, but it was just a thought.

Many years ago I aquired a couple of mikes in pretty much the same state.
 
I made a replacement pawl for one, and when it was all working, made a duplicate mechanism for the one without.
 
The re-calibration was a piece of cake, just rotate the scale till it reads zero.
 
I will check if mine are M & W or Starret, as they are imperial they don't get any use.

As you have a milling chuck installed, it is most certainly secured with a draw bar. You will have noticed that the quill splines move down through the driving splines, hence the drawbar can only have a small head, in your case the Allen screw.
 
As it is unlikely to house a very long Allen screw, my guess is that the draw bar is threaded into the collet chuck at one end and the Allen screw is fastened at the other.
 
I would remove the Allen screw which may bring the draw bar with it, or if the screw seperates, put it back loose and hit it with a soft drift to release the taper, then remove again and pull the the chuck out bringing the draw bar with it. If you run out of room, at least you can then grip the bar to unscrew it.
 
If I were going to put it all back, I would permenantly fix the Allen screw and make it a hex headed draw bar.
 
The gearbox doesn't use oil, the gears etc are packed in grease.

When I bought my Hobbymat mill, it came as the two seperate items - Milling head & Milling table.
 
The Head included the cast bracket to attach it to the Hobbynat lathe, which I did not need.
 
Also included were two semicircular plates and associated screws to enable the accurate setting up both left to right and fore and aft. Being a 'pack rat', I still have the plates.
 
The operating manual included comprehensive instructions for setting the bracket accurately. If it is of use I can look out the instructions, and if they are as I remember them, I can scan them and send them on.

The saga continues -
 
What's gone wrong with the MEW digital archive? I was going to look at an early issue, but found that the archive only went back to issue 122.
 
I may be jumping the gun if this is due to the re-scanning of the earlier issues, but if this is not so, then why have I paid £29 for a year's access to the archive?

When I suddenly lost access to the digital archive, the only way I could restore it was to disable the control of cookies, pop-ups and mobile control in my internet security suite.
 
Enabling the pop-up blocker has stopped the pop-up in its tracks.
 
However, in order to enter text into this reply, everything had to be disabled again. This is strange as it used to work.
