Unfortunately I dont have drawings to offer.  But can I ask, what are the plans for the erm plans when they have been collated? Someone was bound to ask to some point so it may as well have been me!

On the positive side, all of the 'old well made' tools are now available second hand at reasonable prices.  I managed to pick up a spotless eclipse micrometer full working order like new for £3 at a boot fair the other week!
 
Good quality tooling and equipment is still out there, but you have a look/pay for it.  For example, I believe the cheapest brand new Myford lathe will cost you just shy of £7000, for that price you could probably equip a full model engineering workshop with far eastern machinery.

Thread: tutorials for CAD?

I am considering moving over to the dark side and giving CAD a go!  I have attempted using a number of free packages listed on this forum, however I have not got very far! Does anyone know of any tutorials around on the internet linked to a specific package (preferably free package!).  I am after  a CAD package, although I thought the recent step by step guide in MEW was of excellent quality it looked more geared up for 3D drawings as opposed to measured CAD.
Ideally I am looking for a package that I can then use to transfer the drawings to a CNC package in the future if I decide to take that step!

I spent my first year or so turning nice 12" lengths of stock into smaller lengths and sizes suitable for the scrap bin, on the positive side I managed to teach myself how to use a lathe and establish a nice collection of off cuts for future use!

Afternoon all, i was wondering if someone could help.  I need to make three thin brass discs 1" in diameter out of 20g brass.  How would you go about doing it?  The ideas I have come up with so far are as follows; 
1. Loctite a piece of brass to a faceplate and trepan tool (dont quote my spelling of it! but plunge a tool into the brass at the correct diameter producing a disc.
2. mark out the shape and cut/file using a jewellers hand saw/files
 
How would everyone else go about it, and are their any other methods I havent thought of? I dont have access to a mill or a rotary table.

I too would recommend a 3 1/2" gauge model.  5" are quite big for a first model and cost considerably more in terms of castings and materials and 2 1/2" are a bit fiddly for a first time model.

Just thought I would pop a link on to this site http://www.alanstepney.info/page6.html (no affiliation), it has a number of drawing errors listed for a number of loco's and traction engines.  Hopefully it will save someone a costly mistake at some point!

I think the problem is how basic do you make the articles? If you are new to model engineering and have no previous knowledge at all then you may struggle with the article.  I had to teach myself all of the basic techniques and used a good book I found from a second hand bookshop from the 1930's that cost me about a fiver! (hand techniques dont change that much) These days with the internet, if you need to find out more about a specific technique there is usually a website that covers it. 
 
After about 4 months background reading on basic techniques I managed to make a Stuart 10V (that works!) using the book building a vertical steam engine from castings.
 
On the subject of wobblers, I have never used one (maybe I should!!) I only had a dremel and a unimat 3!

Can anyone tell me which sensitive drill this casting is for?
 
 
When I bought it, the seller believed it was from a Westbury sensitive drill.  I have now got hold of the plans for this, and its not the same.  The reason I ask is that there are no attachment points for the jockey wheel or feed lever, I suppose I could attach some but I would rather keep it to the original plans.  The casting is aluminium.  I have seen one in an old MEW where is it shown as a tapping tool holder at an exhibition.

Thread: why cant you silver solder in the workshop?

I have read in various books/magazines that you are not meant to silver solder indoors as this causes other machinery in the workshop to rust.  With the obvious safety aspects of using that much heat indoors, why does it cause machinery to rust?

I am sure others are thinking it, so I will be the first to say it.  I know I am jumping the gun a bit, but what are the plans regarding ME back issues being made available  online?
By the way I am impressed with the MEW back issues, there are a few teething problems with pages in the wrong order, but that is to be expected with a new system and I am sure it will be sorted in due course.  I am just waiting to see the back issue collections for sale on ebay!
