Thread: Fitting a budget DRO to a Warco WM14 milling machine |
16/11/2015 10:55:01 |
This thread is about how to fit a budget readout to a Warco or similar milling machine. I have never really bothered about fitting a readout to a lathe but I consider a readout on the mill is essential. While the X axis mounting is fairly standard, the Y axis uses a technique I have not seen before. (It took me a couple of weeks to think of the best way to fit the Y axis.) The method will be useful for any mill with an angular tapered base. The Warco budget readout console shown above.is battery powered and has readouts for the X and Y scales of the matching digital slides. You are welcome to copy the photos and drawings for personal use only. Comments are welcome as are questions. No question is stupid if you don't know the answer. Hi Mike bondarczuk Feel free to ask questions even if I have not covered a particular component. I have machined Stuart components before. |

Thank You all for your kind comments. I have an S50 somewhere and will also do the Stuart oscillator and Progress further down the line. |

Hi There I have a Warco WM180 lathe and a Warco WM14 milling machine. Also available are a Warco bandsaw, a Clarke variable speed pillar drill, a bench grinder, a Clarke vertical linisher/ disc sander, a power scroll saw, an engraving machine and an Oldak production tapper. The engines will be made using the Warco lathe and mill and the vertical drilling machine. Photos of the machines will be added as we go through the series. You may comment as you wish, I have a thick skin having been editor of both ME and MEW for many years. You are welome to copy the posts and photos for personal use only. The 10V casting set is on the left and the 10H set is on the right. First I have to clean off any flash and remove the casting feeds on both engine bases and bedplates.
Andy at Stuart Models has kindly given me permission to include copies of the 3D exploded diagrams of both the 10V and 10H engines. I have no connection with Stuart Models other than being a satisfied user. STUART MODELS Tel: 01308 456 859 Email sales (at) stuartmodels.co.uk Exploded 3D view of 10V vertical engine above. Exploded 3D view of 10H horizontal engine above. If you click on the drawings they should enlarge to enable easy reading. I will use Stuart's part numbers if I need to refer to parts.. Hi JasonB I have one of those little marking gauges. Still has its marking out point which is a gramophone needle.

I doubt the forum could be easily changed as it is a custom built from scratch software. I think you need a "super moderator" who is prepared to take overall control and make decisions. He/ she would need to be thick skinned. I did alter Model Engineer by dropping the every other issue publishing model and increased the amount of good modelling content but it seems to have reverted to every other issue again. I also note that a lot of content is not really relevant to practicing model engineers, a case in point being the OO gauge track cleaner by Dave Fenner in the latest issue. (Nothing against Dave at all.) I always published the best material I had even if I had nothing to follow in the next fortnight. Something always turned up although I often had to ask for it after seeing a photo or article in a club magazine. |

Use an edge finder. Drill the holes as large as you can and then use the edge finder again when you have raised the head. Also extension holders could be used so everything is about the same length. Edited By David Clark 1 on 14/11/2015 08:51:27 |

As long as the thread title states exactly what it is about there should not be a problem. It is when you can't tell what a thread is about except by reading it that it is frustrating. |

Hi Michael I will do it then. As I will be machining the 10V and 10H at the same time I can do different stops for the same or similar components. |
12/11/2015 20:02:12 |
Hi Jason Other people have embedded video. I doubt it will be a major problem. I wil probably do a thread about fitting a readout to the Warco WM14 as well. Yes, it has been done before but my method of fitting the Y axis is unusual and could be used on any mill with a tapered base casting. |
12/11/2015 19:52:19 |
I have sets of a Stuart 10V and 10H that I am considering doing as a build thread possibly with video as well. Is there any interest on me putting the build on this forum? They would be machined on a Warco WM180 lathe and a Warco WM14 milling machine. Edited By David Clark 1 on 12/11/2015 19:53:58 |

I lived in Scotland for about 4 years and often drove past wind turbines. They often made me feel dizzy as I drove past them. They also had small turbines at the local Tescos on the roof. They had a habit of the blades coming off and wrecking cars in the car park. |
