Thread: What is EN58 used for?
01/10/2023 20:37:05

I have used 2 grades years ago EN58 A & B. You can check if they are Austenitic by trying to add a Magnet. to the work piece

En58A and En58B are wrought steels used for mechanical and allied engineering purposes 1. They have similar chemical compositions, but the difference lies in their mechanical propertiesEn58B has a higher tensile strength than En58A, but lower ductility 23.

Here are some of the mechanical properties of both steels:

Property En58A En58B
Tensile strength 550-700 MPa 700-850 MPa
Yield strength 330-430 MPa 500-650 MPa
Elongation at break 20% min 12% min

Both steels are commonly used in the manufacture of shafts, gears, and axles 1. Due to their high tensile strength and good ductility, they are also used in the production of fasteners, springs, and hand tools 1. You can find more information about their chemical composition, mechanical properties, and cross-references in the datasheet available at 23.

Thread: How to machine this?
20/07/2023 22:19:46

I must admit investment casting sprang into my mind that is one process to consider put forward earlier.

Another option would be 3d printing using a carbon fibre mix or use the file to fully machine from bar using a manual or CNC M/C you would need a file.

If you could send me scale drawing files I would draw up using my 3d software and send you the file foc

Gary

Good Evening Steve - What are you using the fully machined item for please?

Thread: Interference fit bearing sleeve
15/07/2023 08:54:14

Just a thought if not already rejected create your bronze bearing sleeve in 2 stages:-

1. Press fit design OD from Limits and Fits leaving bore sllghtly undersize.

2. Once fitted to Housing Precision Bore/Ream to give Transition fit with shaft.

Thread: Off the shelf stand for Armadeal CJ18A mini lathe.
14/07/2023 00:01:16

Has any modellers purchased an off the shelf for the above mini lathe?

Thread: INTRO
13/07/2023 23:34:22

I am in the process of getting my mini Lathe a CJ18A commissioned and am finding it difficult to Locate a stand for it.

I am a retired Lead Subsea Engineer and served my time with an indentured craft machinist working on centre lathes, capstan & turret lathes, horizontal and verticle milling machines, SBL's, cylindrical grinding machines and hydraulic presses.

I am a very keen oo gauge model railway enthusiast and intend reproducing the old tooling where possible.

I am also an avid speedway fan.
