Welcome! Lots of experience on here. If you intend to progress to machining, probably your first purchase will be alathe, possibly followed by a milling machine. (A drilling machine, and its chucks are not suitable for milling, not designed or constructed for the sideways loads rather than the axial imposed during drilling )
Howard Thanks Howard A lathe is certainly on the list. Just going through planning for a new workshop and that will give us some much needed space for more toys. . |

Hi all, I'm an artist blacksmith near Peebles in the Scottish Borders. We have various odd old bits of kit in the workshop so it will be interesting to see how much of it is used by others on here. Newest toy is an Elliot 2g pillar drill bought last week which is a lovely bit of kit. Favourite toy is either the power hammer or the ward forsyth 30 tonne press. |

Many thanks for your answers everyone. I did look at a VFD after I posted on here mainly due to the cost of a new motor that runs at the right speed. Looks like I can get a VFD cheaper than a new motor. The slow start also sounds good as I know we will forget to move the chuck each time we use it. If anyone has any recommendations for a VFD to use that would be much appreciated. I will let you know how I get on.
Many thanks. |

Hi all, just found this post which has answered my question with regards to the backlash in the drill I just bought. If Paul Matthews is still on here I am interested to know if you needed to change any of the electrics on the forward and reverse switch when you changed the motor from 3 phase to single phase? I am hoping to do the same with mine. Thanks Jim |
