Thread: Steam flange sealant |
21/09/2023 12:49:57 |
Hello I am helping a friend to rebuild a model B1 steam engine. My question is the flanges that take steam to the cylinders are leaking when fired up. We have used new gasket material when we put back together, can anyone recomend a sealant to assist with the gasket sealing. ? Hylomar? Loctite 542? or other recomendations would be much apreciated. Cheers John |

Thread: Taps and die recommendation |

Thanks everyone, It looks like I will stump up a little more money and get the HSS taps and dies from a UK supplier. I was looking for a complete selection but will get them individually as required. on a slightly different note when a drawing say’s 1/4x32or 1/8x32 what thread are these? As I was planning on getting BA taps do I need different ones for these? John |

Sorry I should have said cheap imports! are HSS better than cobalt? |

Hello all. can anyone please recommend good quality taps and dies as I am starting a Stuart No 9 and this will be my first time machining and working with cast iron. I have read about people breaking cheap Chinese taps in cast iron, I don’t want to add to this list. many thanks John |

Hello I have just received the Stuart No9 casting set and have opened this to check contents and noticed that the valve chest cover has no Stuart logo cast into it, is this normal? Many thanks |
Thread: Poppet valve info |

Many thanks everyone for the feedback, I have stripped the 4 valves down and checked them and they are seating very well, I now see that various threads are leaking and the timing and settings are out so this is the source of the problem. I have done some rough timing and the engine is trying to work, so the next thing to do is the setup of the multitude of linkages and timing, once I have got my head around it. Many thanks again and I will be making some "D" drills in the future. Onwards and upwards All the best John |

this is my first post so please be gentle, I am trying to get the valves on my first engine to seal but am having problems. Hopefully I have attached the pic’s of the valves (drawings) I don’t think I will be steaming this engine it will only run on air so does anyone have any suggestions on how to get these to seal or would it be better to redesign the valves to incorporate a silicone/rubber “o”ring. many thanks in advance |
Thread: Another new member |

Hello all Just to say hello from a new member, I.ve had my AMA CJ16a lathe (and Sieg SX2P mill) for about 6 months and have had some success at making a Bengs model Isabelle engine, all parts are made and I have to assemble and fettle valves etc, I suspect that may be the tricky bit! I have been talking to Stewart Hart at my local model engineering club and he has kindly sent me plans for his Grasshopper engine which will be next on my list of projects. I am hoping to be able to look at buying from the classified sales on this site but have realised that I have to contribute to posts before having full access. All the best from Crewe John |
