Thread: Alibre - A First Attempt

David,

Ah, thanks. I don't know what I was thinking.

Maybe a lack of caffeine - off for a top-up.

David,

This cross closes the current file.

This cross closes the whole program.

Thanks for the heads-up. Seems a bit counterintuitive that the outer 'envelope' cross closes that which is within the program. ...but if I think about it long enough I guess I can see the logic. Anyway, it is now a 'known known' to me, so no excuses.

Ady, Jason,

Thank you for the comments.

I don't want to hijack Nigel's thread too much, but may ask the occasional question

I bought Alibre Atom 3D this afternoon. Reeived the licence number about 90 mins ago so Alibre is downloaded and running.

During the Install it tried to install Visual C++ but failed part way through. The install successfully continued anyway. I then downloaded Visual C++ from Microsoft and then 'repaired' Alibre hoping it would now 'see' C++.

Have got half way through Jason's Nuts video...will continue tomorrow. I notice sometimes the mouse cursor doesn't want to grab the line/feature.....it's a decent Logitech M510 wireless mouse. Anyway, getting late...will investigate further tomorrow. But so far the Alibre Interface seem reasonably intuitive.

Thread: Task Lights
28/04/2023 18:37:06

Bill,

I have a few of the IKEA lights dotted about the house and workshop.

The rocker switch on them has 3x positions - middle = Off, down = Bright, up = Dim.

Some do flicker and I find if I gingerly coax the switch slightly away from the Bright or Dim positions then the flickering stops. I guess the culprit is a bad connection.

I have Alibre Professional BUT all the features I used to do the nut and the scribing block column are included in Atom3D

Jason, thanks for that. It's reassuring, if I do take the plunge, that the basic version will be good enough to get the show on the road.

I've just watched Jason's 'Nigel's Nuts' video through properly this time.

I think I understood what was happening... it seems that CAD is more akin to machining the part than drafting it. That kinda makes CAD a bit easier to grasp, at least for me.

Jason, what particular version of Alibre did you use on the above video... Alibre Atom 3D, Alibre Design or Alibre Workshop? I'm hoping it was Atom 3D

Thanks,

Ches

All these useful homeworks, instructions etc are making it very tempting for me to take the plunge into Alibre Atom 3D, especially as there is a group of experienced users here giving their time.

But....plenty other stuff on my plate at the moment....decisions. Anyway, thanks for starting the thread Nigel.

Nigel,

I'm also thinking about getting Alibre (Atom 3D) one day, so interested in your progress. No previous CAD experience.

I've had two monitors for a long while - couldn't go back to one.

Sony's (and others' ) reluctance to engage the 'photographer' in discussion is a bit strange. However it would seem they never bothered reading the accompanying notes to his photograph set, otherwise they would have realised the images were AI generated.

So they stuck their head in the sand.

I think AI generated photography is just another method of creating imagery, similar to cave scratchings, paintings, photography etc. Main difference is that it will soon require little skill or training to create that 'real' imagery. I'm battening down the hatches.

I've now watched the 58 min interview - https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/l00569bp/elon-musk-talks-to-the-bbc

Lots of interesting factoids from Elon therein. I thought the BBC Silicon Valley Tech correspondent was a bit aggressive and cold with Elon but sometimes that is the best way to get to meat.

I find Elon seemingly cannot lie in one-to-one interviews, although he did tread warily on the issue of Indian and Chinese censorship regulations.

I've read the correspondent had only been given 20 mins warning that Elon was available - but surely the interview (and preparation) had been queued up for a few weeks?

My favourite comment from Elon was, when stubbornly reminded he was the CEO of Twitter, "My dog is the CEO of Twitter - it's a great dog!"

He's always interesting to listen to, IMO. He's a bit of a renegade but recognises his flaws.

Buying Twitter, at possibly twice it's actual market value, was part of a longer term plan.

Elon wants to move banking online and out of the hands of the traditional banking systems..... 'Twitter Inc. 'No Longer Exists' As Elon Musk Inches Closer To X 'Everything App' Ambitions' - https://www.forbes.com/sites/dereksaul/2023/04/11/twitter-inc-no-longer-exists-as-elon-musk-inches-closer-to-x-everything-app-ambitions/

I think someone once said "Pick your enemies carefully" .... hmm, ICE manufactures, BigOil, unions, Governments ... and now the world's banking system.....I guess Elon never heard of that saying, or he has strategies in place that indicate a win is possible.

Thread: Making Progress
11/04/2023 22:06:57

Jason,

Thanks for the feedback on vibrations and timescales - good stuff.

I wonder if also, sometimes a resonance is found and it all kicks of after that. My 10V seems to be OK up to a point and then it fairly quickly decides it needs a walk after a certain rpm is reached. My Beam stays put in spite of how many rpm I try to throw at it, but that is possibly due to the high mass, which was one of your earlier points.

I wonder if any of the original full sized engines ever suffered from resonances and how they managed that.....adding weights, stiffners etc?

Anyway, a very neat looking threesome that run a treat. Hopefully there is more on the way ie builds plus pics plus CAD info

Ches.

10/04/2023 20:33:17

when you wound up the speed

It took quite a lot of RPM to get it to start walking. And even then it was still quiet and smooth.

And it seems it only took about 3 weeks to build and paint! Amazing.

Just out of curiosity, which particulr vibrations make a model steam engine walk, and is the walk direction different from vertical to horizontal engines? I guess the point of tethering (air/steam line) may also play a role. My guess is the main source of vibration is the piston, but I can see the full answer being quite complicated.

For your next project Jason, is there perhaps a machine that Cherry Hill missed?...only half joking there

Very nice thread and showing how you use both cnc and manual tools to make a really exciting project.

Yes, agreed. I like how Jason shows the CAD drawings and then how he turns those into actual parts.

Jason/David,

I'm conscious that I've hijacked Jason's 'Progress SH' build thread with my CAD/CAM Qs, so I'll quietly step back

Nonetheless, the info you've both given me has been very useful. As has seeing how it all applies to the real-world use on the Progress SH.

Alibre 3D, the cost-effective option, is very likely the one I'll go for when I do make the plunge.

David,

Got it, thanks.

I've have a number of projects on my plate at the moment but I guess it wouldn't hurt to get a copy of Alibre Atom 3D, even if only for the 30 day trial.

David,

My apologies. I had assumed it was Jason that had so quickly responded. Anyway, thanks to you both.

It does seem a very potent design/manufacturing prodecure, certainly for small batch production.

Am I correct in thinking that if one didn't have a 3D printer or CNC machine, then Alibre could just as quickly 'draw up' dimensioned drawings of the Pulley and electronically send them to an iPad next to the manual mill or lathe?

I was trained to BS308 so have a reasonable understanding of drafting. But alas, missed out on the next-gen revolution ie CAD ....by then I had moved in to the engineer ranks where we sketched out our ideas and passed them to the CAD DO.

OK, well I'm away to think about it all.

All the best,

Ches

Jason,

Thanks. That is a simple but extremely useful explanation. My timescale is a this year/next year kind of thing.

Ches
