Thread: Adding coloured infill to embossed graphics?
31/05/2023 00:30:34

Ah, OK, what grit wet & dry? And did it give a nice crisp edge to your graphics?

30/05/2023 17:30:51

Good ideas so far, many thanks. I will try the last one, as it will have the least chance of me messing it up and getting paint where it shouldn't be.

Me and paint don't get on very well........

30/05/2023 15:24:21

I have 3D printed some items in PLA into which I have embossed numbers, by extruding them into the item by 1mm to leave a 'trench' in the surface in the shape of each number.

Now I want to fill each number with a contrasting colour to make them contrast visually, and am wondering about the best way to do this.

I originally thought I would drip paint or ink in to fill up each number, but the 'trenches are very thin - maybe 0.7mm, and I just know that I will get paint outside the number and not be able to clean it off neatly, leaving an untidy ragged finish.

Any suggestions? I have also wondered about coloured wax, but again, am not sure if it would easily clean off the surrounding surface neatly - especially since the printed surface is not perfectly smooth but full of minute 'furrows' where the filament was laid down on successive passes.

Thread: Long span shelving - support material

As above - there isn't scope for intermediate supports - has to be single span supported either end only

Ah, missed that.

I'll get my coat.......

29/05/2023 23:59:48

You could go for 4 supports but I would advise that you go for 5, which would mean you would never need to worry about overloading, nor about the shelf sagging between the supports.

Assuming an inset of 20mm from each end; the shelf support centres will need to be at;

20mm

760mm

1500mm

2240mm

2980mm

As measured from one end

29/05/2023 19:45:46

I am having difficulty visualising this. For medium loads, I put supports every 700-800mm. and use 18mm thick plywood sheeting cut in strips.

Thread: Have you ever looked into your Credit Card ?

You can request non-radio bank cards. We do, to prevent people ripping off our accounts by carrying around radio card readers, and accessing our cards without our knowledge.

Any who are worried about thieves using transponders to unlock and start their cars just need to put their electronic key in the microwave oven and close the door. Microwave ovens are electrically screened to prevent radio frequency leakage - well, at least at 2.400GHz.

Of course if thieves actually break into your house, that will be the first place they will look to steal your car keys.......I always take mine with me.

Thread: What did you do today? 2023

Never repair a ladder, it is not worth the risk of it breaking or you being tipped off it in the future. Just bin it. Or you could shorten it I suppose if the damage is right at the end.

Where I first worked, the mechanical workshops were not allowed to repair ladders, even though they were perfectly capable of doing so.

Posted by Nigel McBurney 1 on 22/05/2023 09:24:52:.........60 years ago this would have been a uk built transformer,on a a uk built trailer probably hauled by a Watford built Scammel. where did the UK go wrong?

(Industrialists were more interested in lining their own pockets, and decided it would be cheaper to import cheaper components and commodities from abroad than invest in modern factories in the UK. Cheaper for individual companies, that is, and bigger profits and salaries for the bosses, but much more expensive for the country in the long run). Apologies for thread drift.

Thread: Free Scanner
19/05/2023 23:38:55

Well , we are going to have to think of a different economic model, because we can't go on increasing the world population for ever. We are already in trouble with atmospheric pollution owing to overpopulation as it is.

Our old inkjet printer stopped working after a house move, and since they only cost a few hundred pounds new, we looked at what was on offer.

Shocked to see that many printers now need a smartphone App to use the scanner function. And, no doubt, to use the App requires your name, address, email and mobile phone number - more personal data for the hackers !

So I am now involved with repairing the blocked printhead of the old printer, which needs no such App.

What saddens me is that new software is not written to be backwards compatible, i.e. new software should contain core language capable of driving an old printer to print a file from a word processor or print a standard photograph, just maybe not be capable of performing new features.

When I learned about television transmission standards in my first job, I was proud that the engineers had made the new PAL 625 colour signal backwards compatible to work on the old mono, (black and white) sets. (The older sets just ignored the colour information in the new transmitted signal, and the colour scene was coded at the studio to give an acceptable grey scale rendition on mono sets, as well as a good colour picture on sets that could decode and display the additional colour information).

Myford, and others like them could have evolved; They could have developed milling machines, drill presses, accessories, tooling, cheaper hobby machinery VFDs etc etc.

Toyota are well known for producing extremely long lasting and reliable vehicles.

Mazda produced the MX-5; a modern, reliable version of the Spitfire, MG, Lotus and similar roadsters - those companies could have done that, but didn't.

Why has the text suddenly gone small? How bizarre !

Thread: Whats the best material to withstand impact?
19/05/2023 10:29:36

Without wishing to intrude, does your son say why he smashes clocks? Do they irritate or annoy him with their ticking perhaps?

I know that autistic people find it hard to ignore or filter-out extraneous sounds, such as people talking outside a window; and perhaps ticking clocks are driving your son to distraction - like a Chinese water torture?

Well Tim if you don’t like the articles there’s two solutions.

Stop reading it

write something which isn’t steam or locomotive based.

The editor can only publish the copy which is sent to him

Not having a go in any way, because we all make mistakes, (as the Dalek said, climbing off the dustbin)........., but a published magazine would, we hope, have some basic fact checking and spelling checks of pieces submitted.

As I'm sure MEW does, and this was a rare glitch. yes

Thread: Workshop shelving
18/05/2023 13:30:03

I find that the shelving that uses heavy duty brackets that slot into vertical steel rails with dual rows of slots most useful - you can always easily adjust the heights and gaps between shelves as your requirements and tool inventory changes.

For the shelves themselves, I simply go to B&Q and get them to machine cut strips on their vertical circular saw 'table' from 18mm heavy duty plywood to my specifications, which they do for no charge. (The 8 x 4 sheets are conveniently placed next to the sawing machine).

This system keeps the floor underneath the shelving clear of support legs, so can be used to store ladders and other large items.

Just FYI; I struggled with PETG not staying stuck to the bed, with an "open" printer, i.e. no box over the build space, until I tried raising the bed temperature from 60 to 80°C.

Worked fine then.

When the print is finished, switch off the printer and leave everything in place to cool down overnight, then the model will easily lift off the bed.

Also :

Your = Your house.

You're = You're going to renovate the house. (You're = you are).

Often seen confused with each other.

17/05/2023 10:03:26

While we are talking about errors:

There = There is a house.

Their = It is their house.

They're = They're going to renovate the house. (They're = They are).

Three different words that sound identical, but which have different meanings. laugh

Thread: Cables

Isn't it illegal to do major car repairs on a public street? And welding without screens?? I bet your neighbours love you !

Kettle plug, (IEC), idea is good. I would like to rewire all my power tools with super flexible cable, but I have only seen it available on 100m drums, costing an arm and a leg.

Regarding power tool leads, I would change all mine for super flexible cable, but can only find the stuff on 100m drums, costing a small fortune.
