Thread: What is this?
27/08/2023 21:15:01

A floating reamer seems to be the answer. Thanks all, every days a school day.

Though I don't get how you would use it as not being a fixed diameter I would have thought the results would be variable.

26/08/2023 21:38:21

That would make sense, there is no way to fix/lock the outside width so I guess it's not a precision tool for a set diameter.

I bought a box of old cutters, bits and pieces from a boot sale and when sorting through it I found this below. Can anyone tell me what it is and what it's used for.

I appears to be some sort of cutter as it has sharpened edges on the sides and when rotated the two inside parts with the sharpened edges spin out.

I've never come across one before and I'm not even sure how or what it's used in or if it's complete.

To Coggy, I suspect you still have the original belts, so may not have come across this effect. The reason I fitted a link type was because I did not fancy the hassle of removing shafts ect, I tend to leave well enough alone, but I might give it a try. As a matter of interest, link belts are about three times the price of standard belts.

I will check out everything, and again, thanks to all.

Yes, I'm still running the original belts.

Thread: Lathe and mill covers
17/02/2023 16:11:35

I've been covering most of my machines with old sleeping bags for years, they can be picked up cheap from charity shops cheaply and sometimes if you ask they might have one or two out back with broken zips that are going into the rubbish, a small thank-you donation gets cheaply and helps them out.

I've not suffered any rust problems on them yet.

I have a craftsman and find it pretty smooth starting in either direction, certainly no discernable difference between forward and reverse. It is a relative new machine.

Sounds good, though I'd say the true test of an insurer is how they handle things in the event of a claim.

True, but I hope never to have to find out that way.

I just want to pass on information about a good deal I just got.

As discussed in previous post on this subject I found myself in the situation of my outbuildings contents insurance not being high enough to cover the value of what was inside.

The house insurance was due but I was having trouble finding a company that would give more than £5000 contents cover, my current insurer was only offering £3000. I got my current insurer to give me a good deal on the house insurance and went hunting sperate workshop insurance through various brokers. I nearly settled on a policy giving me 10k contents insurance split into tools, materials and machinery.

Then I gave LV insurance a ring and they gave me a good deal. There policy covered the contents within the property boundaries so house, sheds, workshop contents all covered by one amount.

They were also very easy to deal with, didn't even care about trees growing near by. I found their attitude refreshing and now I'm fully covered at a very reasonable price much cheaper than having separate policies, in fact it was cheaper than my previous insurance.

Usual disclaimers, I'm not associated in anyway with LV or any other insurance firm.

I don't see the layout issue the OP mentions as a big problem. Just my opinion.

It's not a big problem just bugging at times when as a newbie I'm trying to understand something. I wish I'd never posted now, I'm not knocking the the hard work of anyone I was just wondering why photos relevant to certain text was sometimes pages apart. Now I see the problems encountered.

Thanks to all who make MEW a good mag.

29/12/2022 14:37:17

I don't mean to be critical, it is a great mag and the contributors do a great job. It just a bug when your trying to reference the text to a photo especially if I'm not familiar with the technique or item and trying to learn from it. It is certainly a problem in some other mags as well.

I'm sure there is a logical reason for this but I've got to get it off my chest. I enjoy reading MEW but I find one aspect really annoying, that is the placement of photos compared to the text. The text will mention photo numbered 3 but when I look for photo 3 it is on another page or even in some cases two pages back and then I get involved in a lot of page turning just to see what the text is talking about. Is it just me that finds this a pain?, probably so.

Is there some reason for this sort of layout?

Thread: Model engineers workshop magazine.

I gave up with the emailing/contact us and phoned. Turns out the direct debit was cancelled by the bank when I switched banks using the automated supper easy switch over, It never got moved over. Still all sorted now far quicker to phone than email.

10/12/2022 10:53:46

Thanks Rod, guess I'm missing something then. I did email Mortons a few times but didn't get any response, could be me. I guess I'll have to go back to old tech and phone them on Monday laugh.

10/12/2022 10:22:47

I guess the answers to this is somewhere on here but I can't find it so I'll ask a new.

Is there a problem with MEW magazine getting sent out. Which was the last issue?

I'm have a continual subscription and not received anything since Oct issue No:320. Has there been no further issues or am I missing something?

Thread: How Much is this Costing Me?
08/08/2022 14:52:03
Posted by Samsaranda on 08/08/2022 13:54:20:

I changed 6 four foot fluorescent tubes in my workshop for 6 four foot led “tubes”, to me the difference in light output was amazing, I can work in their during the day with the blinds pulled down over the windows to shut out the sun in the hot weather, I know that the rated consumption of the led tubes was considerably less than the fluorescents although I haven’t measured the consumption for comparison so I am happy that I am using far less electricity to light the workshop, it’s got to be the way to go. Dave W

I went all led about two years ago and the improvement in light quality was worth the cost of the tubes, plus I'm saving money on electric, though the cost of the electric has curtailed my use of machines and as the time factor is unimportant to me I've started doing far more jobs manually which takes longer and is more tiring but at least it only costs me the wear on the tools.

Thread: Rear toolpost for Chester craftsman
27/05/2021 22:03:14

I'd like to see a picture of your rear toolpost please, I have a craftsman and was thinking of making one so it you be much appreciated.

I have totally given up going anywhere near Chester again, I think my lathe is great but wish I could have got it from somewhere else. Chester is an appalling company to deal with. My lathe came with a broken gib, they claimed they would send another one for free, and then nothing, and that was12th August 2020, they still ignore my emails. Given up with them a total shower. My bandsaw came from Warco and so probably will my milling machine when the time comes.
