Spent a few hours machining and putting together one one of the Cringle vertical boilers today.

Although Scheppach manufacture very good Bansdsaws in their German Factory the smaller cheaper ones are badged Chinese ones so I would suspect if it's the original blade that came with the saw I would look at trying to get a better quality blade that's possibly made in the UK such Dakin-Flathers blades.

I've just bought some from chesterfieldmachinetools.co.uk (Kieran Blackwell-Bespoke toolmaker) The tools made in the UK, I don't know whether the tips are but I will say they are superb and give an excellent finish and seem to keep their edge which is more than I can say for the Chinese ones. He advertises on his web site, Ebay. etc.,

I'm currently building a Stuart Beam from castings (1" DIA x 2" stroke) Could I ask what would be a suitable pipe size for the steam inlet and exhaust. The aim is to run it slowly on steam.

Here's the solution I came up with using a 10mm thick steel base plate locked down using the compound slide rotating insert. To be honest the setup up rigidity is still not brilliant and only allows light cuts. Since have obtained a proper Milling Machine.

My pride and joy 1972 Commando 750cc Interstate (Combat Engine) after a winter refurbishment which included a complete rewire, fitting of an Alton Electric Start, fresh paint and brake upgrade.

I use Scotoiler FS365 (made for motorbikes) just because it's in the garage for my vintage bikes. Simple spray on and wipe over with a rag.

I purchased the kit from Machine DRO and used their magnetic encoders.

Actual length of the encoders are as follows

X Axis - 500mm

Y Axis - 200mm

z Axis - 400mm

Take into account the company uses its part numbers and lengths based on the actual physical travel of each Axis which is 50mm less than the required encoder for each Axis.

On the standard SX3 table the X Axis 500mm encoder sits perfectly in place just short of the table drain plug.

The only real work was fabricating a stand off sub assembly for the Z Axis to ensure the encoder was parallel to the column casting. Here I made 4 off x 17mm bushes which spaced out the ally strip from the column away from the sheet steel column cover.

I understand from Arc that Machine DRO are in the process of putting together Machine specific DRO kits for the SIEG 2.7 and 3 which should be available within weeks.

I couldn't wait so ordered a generic kit ( Magnetic encoders) and have just installed it on my SX3. Here are some images of how I fitted it.

First Stuart kit (Christmas pressie!) nearly finished, just some pipework soldering and plumbing plus attention to studs, nuts and grub screws. Enjoyable but think I need something a little larger as eyesight is not quite what it was, so I've just received the castings for a Stuart Beam for the next challenge.

My kit main drawing indicates studs and nuts. Strangely, there's an amendment sheet in the kit showing split bearings with studs dated 29/01/2015 but the same split bearing drawing is on the main drawing (July 1993) with no difference.

Just received a new Beam Engine kit from Stuart.

I've just noticed a recently finished one for sale on EBay and the 4 main bearing blocks appear to be made from single blocks of material yet in my casting kit they are separate split bearing castings requiring to be bolted together before final machining. Why the difference?

Started to fit a Machine DRO to my Sieg SX3

I believe the name Sieg and Weiss were chosen to supposedly indicate German quality!

i think their foundry factory is elsewhere.

Images from a recent visit there buying machinery. All the machines are painted and specified to buyers requests. All the machines are manufactured in house unlike Weiss and others who buy the basic machines from local manufacturers and prepare them for export.

Can I ask what type/make of paint you used and how was it applied?

In a past life I used to do a fair amount of Aluminum casting and found that car pistons from the scrap yard often produced the best results.

The tube idea above all in with enough cut MDF from B&Q to box in the storage area on the lower shelf (in progress) comes in less than £90. The tube is 33.7mm diameter and plenty thick enough to hold the 170kg Sieg 3. The tube also comes in bigger diameter but as you say you would would want a lower stand for the Mill you've bought.

Have you thought of contacting Chester UK as they also do similar stands for their Mills.

Assembled in 15 minutes with an 8mm Allen key. Metal cut to size FOC by supplier.
