Thread: Raspberry Pi Pico

I'm a retired IT professional so my opinion carries great weight.

Amongst the adept, computer languages occupy the same mental space as religion.

Mine is always "better" and all the others are crap.

Structurally they are all the same with syntactic variation enabling great obscurity.

Is it better to speak French or Sanskrit when you holiday in Kazakstan.

When the only tool you have is a hammer all problems look like a nail.

That is the great enlightenment I have come to. (That and PHP is the one ring to rule them all.)

Mr Chuck taper, how in gods name [sorry god] do you know population growth will slow and decline by mid century.

Solar energy provide more than enough energy - "200,000 times the world’s total daily electric-generating capacity is received by Earth every day in the form of solar energy."

The problem is not energy its our unwillingness to embrace and make the necessary changes to how we live.

Politicians only reflect our aggregate demand as a collective. We voted for them. i.e. its not them its us.

The internet used approx 20% of the global energy budget (which by some strange coincidence mirrors the brain/body energy balance)

Everything is always ending in catastrophe. Everything is always worse that it used to be. My ideology is better than your Ideology because mine is mine - - gimme a break!

We live in a cruel world. We can't buy a gallon of ACME Paint for sixpence, that was mixed by Master Craftsmen using only the finest secret materials, that never goes off, applies perfectly to any surface, and lasts forever. Real paint is hard work and the results are never permanent.

Dave

Indeed.

There is no such thing as a free lunch.

I wound up using some agricultural equipment stuff for the chassis which seems reasonably ok in terms of finish. I'm about to dismantle the leaf springs to clean and refinish and was wondering if any of the miracle products were worth trying.

I think will stick with tractor paint.

Briefly (and hopefully) to the point.

One of my more long term (never ending) projects involves the restoration of an old vehicle.

Rust removal and painting are covered in numerous threads here and they have provided some useful information. However I do have some specific questions however.

First - what are various opinions about the product Por15. The internet provides conflicting views. One in particular - once a container is opened and exposed to air the contents will start to harden and will continue even on resealing said container. This I have found - in my own direct experience - to be false (6 month and doing fine). So if that is false then what other miraculous properties are untrue.

Second - this product, [https://polishnparts.ie/eastwood-patina-preserver-aerosol-invisible-rust-protectant-coat/ ] - or similar. Do they do what they promise or is this even realistic.

Thanks in advance for any consideration given.

I did auditing for a few years

Most businesses stray into legal grey areas from time to time, the very nature of business is to "take a risk" from the very start of whatever business it is

So the risk taking mindset is there from the start, the issue is to avoid becoming reckless

Absolutely.

Risk taking mindset is not in itself the issue. The bigger issue is that the "system" filters for that type of personality.

Reiteration over time then tends to co-select other, less desirable, personality traits.

There is a body of thought that says "high achievers" often exhibit psychopathic personality traits.

My own experience (in management) would lean me towards supporting that view.

As always your milage may vary.

PS We also tend to confuse managers and leaders - two very, very different things.

My own thoughts on reading the article.

1 human (H) per 100 gallons (g) of water.

Average human body 14g (UK gal)

0.14 H/g (is there a corresponding SI unit!).

Tis still a fair concentration of whatever is left at the end of the process - and they intend to let it down the drain ????

Is there an upper concentration at which it exceeds the relevant standard?

Thread: Help Wanted - Rack operated tailstock specifications.

There is a fairly wide run-out groove but as the rack teeth seem cut into the full cylinder, not a flat, the fall towards the rack teeth ends might clear any pinion gullets ending shallow anyway.

You still ned the crests of the gear to be fully cut, if the cutter can't pass right through the crests will end up too thick and not fit into the shallow but narrow ends of the rack teeth.

Frank, what was the spec of the gear you ordered?

The gear that I ordered is not is not a close match

Measurements:

Mod 1
25.95mm outer diameter (max) and about 11mm thick.

Not really meant as a replacement but only to ascertain if its feasible bore and fit as described in earlier post. If so then I can put more effort into a better approximation.

In an ideal world I would manufacture a replacement unit but in this world I'm not that skilled (etc).

01/07/2023 11:48:33

Thanks to all who responded.

The (collective) measurements supplied correspond closely to measurements taken from the item in my possession. So I now have the parameters of the gear and I can take a first pass at some sort of solution.

I intent to remove the damaged gear teeth by turning and to then fit a bored out gear onto the shaft. The options being interference fit, locktite etc

I have ordered an inexpensive gear on eBay with a view to machining it as a test case [ that being to ] bore out the centre hole to an interference fit. This can then be slid onto the turned shaft. If the gods are with me I can then put more effort into finding an item with exact specs.

I have used the calculator at Link 1 - [ http://hessmer.org/gears/InvoluteSpurGearBuilder.html ] to generate a drawing. The only reservation I have is the centre hole - it is rather large in comparison to the overall diameter of the gear.

So I have a new query.

Is this approach rational or is the resultant gear likely to be too weak for the job it will have to do?

Any and all views welcome.

Regards.

Cowell was what I was missing - I knew the item had a designation but there was an void in my brain.

I'm hoping to work out the specification of the gear and possibly find something that can be engineered to replace the damaged piece. Hopefully measurement and first principles should allow me to work these out. The Internet has not (as of this note) yielded anything detailed in the way of exactly what I need without making any effort......etc.*

Although following your Cowell suggestion, this turned up Link - [ https://www.model-engineer.co.uk/sites/7/documents/myfordracktailstock.pdf ] - which is at the very least a read.

Acquired the following recently:

rack_tailstock.jpg

Unfortunately some teeth on the gear (pinion?) portion are damaged which cause the rack on the barrel to foul - preventing any useful operation.

Can anyone direct me to information re the specifications for the gear teeth?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Thread: ChatGPT incoming
11/06/2023 17:20:05

ChatGPT is not a tool in the typical sense.

It knows the rules of our language - how we use it and what the patterns around our questions and answers are shaped like. It then generates a 'statistically correct' response.

Within any chat you can instruct it to not return unverifiable material. It won't stop completely but it will reduce.

Precede any chat with a list of ground rules (that you develop).

These are my own observations.

Your milage may vary.

Into my possession came this.

img_6223.jpeg

180, 144,84, 50 holes. & Appears old (see font used in stamping)

It's approx 1/4inch thick - 7inch diameter - bronze.

Any thoughts on the specifics of what this is or what/how it was used.

Could it be specific to clockmaking??

Thanks in advance.

There are interesting motors out there.

e.g. **LINK**

web-search "hollow shaft electric motor" throws up lots of other stuff - also add 3-phase.

The concept of the electromagnetic control of the spin of a rigidly constrained spindle is attractive to me.

Nothing more.
