Thread: Recomendations for a Keyless Chuck?
13/01/2022 19:40:49

smiley

The arc chuck arrived Saturday, 13mm is a good compromise and they were in stock. I also got some bits and pieces to complement my improved drilling capability. Sunday was my birthday and the cheque from my Mum covered it, so I could say she bought me something specific and wanted even if she doesn't understand the attraction.

I will have a play when I can get into the workshop, it needs some serious tidying, and the house is worse!

The arc catalogue is terrific, it seems so much easier and impressive than their website, very helpful.

Thread: Is there too much choice?
03/01/2022 10:18:46

I historically got very irritated by so-called suppliers of utilities. For most of what we need there was one state-owned system and a host of parasites acting as sales agencies.

Things have changed for telecoms as mobiles are a genuine choice, having different infrastructure.

There is some change in electricity as the UK now has numerous suppliers at different prices and the sales agencies buy and sell electricity from those sources. Hence the recent chaos, which I have managed to survive as I am with a "provider" who buys electricity mostly from wind power and hence the price hasn't gone up. The small premium I paid when I signed up compared to coal and gas-sourced electricity has disappeared as fossil prices have risen, I now have "cheap" electricity.

Insurance is sort of sales agencies, I find that all the cheapest prices have the same underwriter, so I am stuck with them unless I pay a fortune. What does help is good service when you have a reasonable claim and that is worth seeking out.

Beautiful engine, a terrific achievement.

15 years is a long time, but a fantastic journey, I am glad you enjoyed it Simon.

Thanks for all the wisdom guys.

I will have a tinker with the original chuck as well, I think it would be better for big holes if it worked. If not a replacement would be wise

Cheers

Thanks guys, your help is invaluable.

The variety of prices is amazing, concentrating on 13mm and MT3:

Albrecht - circa £260

Vertex - circa £150

Porta (Rotagrip) - circa £60 + taper

Warco £36 + arbor @ £13.65

ARC - circa £23 + taper@ £6.55

LINQUAN JING (ebay, <16mm) - £15.99 including taper. surprise

Based on customer service I think that the ARC might be worth a punt but oh those Albrecht chucks look sexy.

I will report back, don't hold your breath, my birthday isn't for another week or so. wink

Thread: Do you "still" enjoy driving?
30/12/2021 18:59:47

cool

Great thread.

I too remember when the speed limit was advisory and generally to be exceeded by 10mph on a matter of principle, even in a 1300, whilst others often stayed at 10mph or more under. This offered plenty of interesting situations and much to discuss.

Nowadays every car can easily exceed the limit and most people regard it as necessary to go at that limit irrespective of weather and light. Towns are regarded as special rally stages and woe betide anyone who can't see the arrows on the road under the cars in front. SATNAV is mandatory for preservation, not just for navigation.

So a lot of motoring is a pain, and in no way enjoyable other than arriving unscathed. Most journeys are discussed in terms of the delay.

However I still enjoy it when I can, like every commute which is along pretty country lanes, touring beautiful mountains and foolishly when I leave people at lights or between roundabouts. I like to feel the car balance around corners and the steering adjust as the turbo boost increases. Its always an extension of my body and as an unfit and decrepit ageing man I appreciate that even more than I did as a hooligan.

Thread: Recomendations for a Keyless Chuck?
30/12/2021 17:48:28

Hi folks

The chunky chuck on my Warco 16B is pants, it seems to let go of any drill I try and use. The key is very short but even when I use a tool for additional leverage it eventually lets go.

I am familiar with the idea of lubricating a chuck but it seems oily enough and it is pretty much brand new; its not rusty and full of grit.

I am minded to get a keyless chuck. I see these seem popular on Youtube.

What are peoples experiences and do they recommend a particular brand for hobby use?

All comments most appreciated.

Captive drawbar?? I need to read the instructions. blush

I love my 16B, its quiet and powerful for small stuff, with just enough space for some larger items when required.

All axis are easy to crank, even when machining.

I have a Warco-fitted DRO too. They use their branded scales which are small and fit in very well. Warco don't fit them with the protective cover as the seals face down, and the Y scale hits the wall behind the machine as fitted, so I hope to make some small improvements just because I can. I bullied Warco into sending me the covers as shown in the webpage.

The drill chuck is pants as is the safety cover. Both need replacing with something better. Not a big deal, I think the safety cover is expected to be thrown away and people prefer keyless chucks.

Ade has loads of experience and has posted hours of stuff on YouTube using this machine.

Thread: Does charging your car battery on fast charge damage it?
25/11/2021 22:44:26

Good thread - good question.

My 35 year old Halfords charger produces a lower voltage than the alternator, measured in the car and at the battery; so I figure its fine to leave it on "high". The current drops to less than 1A when the battery is charged, so the battery is not cooked.

My car is an SMAX with a 2.0 diesel and a huge battery. It can still randomly flatten the battery, its a Ford thing apparently. Anyhow numerous recharges doesn't seem to have done any damage .

Awesome job Mark.

That looks to be a very sophisticated machine. Has anyone got a brochure, or link, with all the various ways it can be used? Maybe there is just too many?

Nice "discussion" here.

May I suggest the compromise it to have the ambition to improve one's equipment, perhaps even to budget and plan, and to (ab)use the current equipment for the time being, that way risk of damage is minimised.

I like marking out, I get that wrong often enough, the thought of making mistakes, even when using the DRO, horrifies me, I like to see what I am aiming for.

Thread: Warco WM 16 motor

I think its down to warranty claims, not enough customers are burning their motors out.

Obviously a manufacturers fitment needs integrating, filters etc. I can see why they don't bother.

09/11/2021 13:54:16

It sounds like a cooling problem, not an instantaneous power issue.

May I add my vote to cooling fans. It does no good to any part of the motor to cook it.

You may find that it only needs a few more slots, fans are cheap, so they shouldn't be a problem.

Thread: 7BA Grub Screws with socket (rather than slot)

A spot of Locktite will make up for a compromised thread engagement.

Great thread - slotted grub screws are so troublesome that even Meccano has dropped them.

Moved wires now it works sounds like a bad connection.

New bits won't hurt, if you can avoid electrolytic capacitors, they dissolve themselves after 8 or 10 years, and anything they dribble acid onto.

Fabulous idea.

Such clocks are a bastion of civic life, we have one in our village and I can hear it clearly on a quiet night over half a mile away..

Surely if you quarter scale the weights should be 1/64 ??

Thread: DRO Z axis
01/11/2021 09:09:34

laugh

Hi Bo'sun,

I also have a WM16B so for once I can speak with some form of qualification. party

The quill "DRO" is nice but it turns itself off and in doing so forgets where it is, so all moves have to be relative, this is a big deal compared to a real DRO which is continuous and allows clever functions.

The worm drive on the quill is lovely, so its not a big deal, but I shall be fitting a Z--axis to match my factory installed X & Y as time allows.

It has been pointed out that a "proper" DRO on the quill connected to work with the main axis DRO is a good thing, the electrics seem a bit expensive but I see the logic. It would allow use of the fine-feed on the quill rather than the courser Z-axis for small adjustments whilst still maintaining continuous accurate read out.
