Thread: Swinden Vice Problem

Thank you. That makes sense.

Hi There,

I wonder if someone could give me some guidance.

I bought an old Swinden vice a few years ago from a car boot sale. At the time of buying I could appreciate the quality of the vice but hadn't heard of that brand before.

It was working fine after just a good clean and lube up.

I let work borrow it and now a section of the thread is very tight. Only over an inch or two but tight enough to make using it awkward.

I'm guessing that the main thread (I don't know the proper name for it) has been stretched by over zealous tightening and that's what is causing the problem.

Does that sound like a likely diagnosis?

Any ideas for a remedy? I've tried working the jaws back and forth over the tight section but it hasn't helped.

Could I run a tap down the thread to try to correct the stretch?

If that was a sensible option, does any one know what the thread is? I've had a snoop around the internet but no luck so far.

I can't complain too much about the damage occurring at work. It's my Company

That's brilliant. I hadn't heard of a geometric average before. Everyday's a school day!

Hi Gary,

I've seen a product called SIKA work well in a similar situation. It was used to seal the walls of trenches, about 2m deep, in a car factory. This was just over 30 years ago so there may now be other similar products on the market. Our Site Foreman swore it was the best available product (at that time).

My brother was in the Royal Navy and a non smoker. He was advised on sign up to say he was a smoker so he could receive the tobacco allowance. When he came home on leave he always had a stack of baccy in tins with a "RN" logo on them. They were always gratefully received by my Dad who was a heavy "roll you own" smoker

The empty tins were great for making survival kits (I was into camping etc). Happy Days!

Thanks for that guys. Food for thought. I suppose all brands have a "Friday Afternoon" effect when workers have their eyes on the clock rather than the work I saw Warco getting talked down yesterday but who knows how many are owned by happy customers?!

Hi All,

I've been lurking for a while but felt it was about time I contributed something!

I'm based in Dublin, Ireland and have been following the magazine for a year or so. With the advent of Covid, I've been directed to this website which I'm finding very useful and entertaining!

I have a very limited workshop (it's a tin shed with the usual household tools). I have an old Wade model lathe which I bought second hand about 10 years ago. I'm lucky enough to have dry, secure space in work for that but that obviously limits my access to it. My long term plan is a block built shed at home which will then allow me to build a workshop.

I'm torn between new Far East kit (which looks like exceptional value, but I'm not convinced), v's older but better quality European gear.

Anyway, I'm in no rush so I'll sit back and glean what I can from you lot

Hi All,

I'm a new member and forum lurker

I'm based in Ireland and have a very limited workshop currently but I'm biding my time and keeping my eyes open for the right bits of kit as they become available. I'm following this thread with interest as the Warco machines appeared good value. I'm now not so sure!
